The Woman King (2022)
Very entertaining movie
I thoroughly enjoyed The Woman King. It's a fast action, adventure show. Viola Davis is a badass, protector of her people. She eventually has to face her past and present. The plot was well enough, setting up for a nice revenge story. I really liked several of the characters and how they became friends. The initiation seen of them running through a bed of thorns made me wince.
I've read some negative comments about the historical accuracy of the movie. Who cares? Were you not entertained? Must you believe everything you see. It's called suspension of belief. Im glad this was not a documentary. My entire family loved it.
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
This movie should be considered for a best picture Oscar.
We waited 36 years for this movie and it was worth the wait. I know the Academy usually nominates fluffy, intellectual, eclectic movies for best picture but this is one of the best movies I've seen in decades. Dare I say perfect. An adrenalin rush that will leave everyone happy in the end. A visual masterpiece with a compelling story.
All That Glitters (1977)
I saw this when I was a teenager.
I've been trying to find an episode, any episode of this brilliant show. Way ahead of its time. It would air very late at night and I'd stay up to watch. The writing was so clever and it made you pause, think then finally get it. This should have been required viewing for many men especially.
Someone please release this gem.
Love and Monsters (2020)
Great family fun
I just saw this movie with my dad and 2 kids (13 and 9). It was a cute, funny, sometimes thrilling adventure. My dad normally falls asleep during our movie watch but he was glued to the screen. The kids loved it. We all said this was hands on the best movie we've seen all year and we've seen a lot. The kids are still talking about it almost an hour later.
Best Shot (2018)
Awesome show. Very real insight into inner city life.
Wow, wow, wow. This is a very good show that details the life of several boys on an inner city HS team as they make a run to the state finals. This is like a mini-series Hoop Dreams showcasing the struggles these boys endure to become men. I watched this series with my son who plays basketball and it really hit home how easy he's had it compared to these kids. Several life lessons that are great discussions for a family. The players and coaches were very entertaining and you end up really rooting for each of them.
I don't think people like coach OG and Jay Will get enough credit for what they do for the kids. I was very impressed with the overall production. A++
Uncle Drew (2018)
Very funny movie especially for basketball fans
I took my young son and daughter to this movie and we had a blast. Very funny movie that doesn't take itself serious. You will enjoy the movie even if you are not a basketball fan but there's a lot of subtle inferences you might not get. There's some good old 70's R&B music, slapstick comedy, mixed with basketball. What not to like? We left wanting more as the run time seemed short. The videos during the credits are worth staying. If you're looking for a quick comic relief, this is a good afternoon diversion.
Black Panther (2018)
Very entertaining movie
Wow, I really enjoyed this movie. The plot was simple but the story line was thought provoking. It could have used a bit more action scenes, especially highlighting the special weapons but the visuals were awesome. Somewhat cliche' and corny laughs but I never got bored and I was glued to the screen. My favorite Marvel movie.
The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005)
Some scary moments but slows down at the end.
(this review contains spoilers) I just saw a pre screening of TEER. The movie is about the so called possession and subsequent death of a college student during an exorcism. The priest that conducted the exorcism is under trial for her death and we have a courtroom drama over the event. The first 2/3 of the movie was great and was building momentum only to slow down the last 1/3. We don't get much info into how she became possessed, why she was alone in her dorm at the time, or why she allowed the devil in... but there were some genuine scary moments especially when you thought she, Laura Linney's character and /or the priest were going to meet the devil. This suspense more then makes up for the slow courtroom ending. The film didn't try to pass judgement either way as to whether she was or wasn't possessed, leaving it up to the viewer. It never really answered whether Linney's character actually believed her client (the Priest) nor did it give much credible evidence to prove or disprove the event. The courtroom was where the movie bogged down. This was a basic prosecution/defense debate with a very predictable ending. The ending was also very flat leaving a lot of questions unanswered. The devil was apparently after Linney but somehow stopped...
The screening I attended did not have the priest say "no injection of the devil", nor was there any levitation (that I read occurred elsewhere). There was also nothing about her body being exhumed to find a decomposed corpse which the catholic church said meant that she wasn't possessed (since the possessed do not decompose)
There was no gory, bloody, graphic effects other then a twisting, stiff twitching of her body at times. All in all an entertaining movie that does an OK job of suspense minus the courtroom drama. 6.5 out of 10
Land of the Dead (2005)
Pretty Lame movie, nothing new here...
This was a very cheesy sequel to the series. This wasn't even entertaining. I don't know how most folks gave this good reviews. Zombies that can think??? Big daddy didn't do anything special, he will in no way be considered Oscar worthy. Nothing new or innovative.
At least in the last zombie movie (forgot the name there getting so similar, but the one with Ving Rhames and Mikeh Phifer) the zombies could run. This one was so fake and unbelievable. Zombies slowly walking in a trance yet somehow catching up to running stupid humans. Give me a break. None of the lead characters were likable so you didn't even care if they got killed. No suspense, no jump scenes. The whole plot stunk. Wait for cable.
