Seraphim Falls (2006)
Great beginning, fizzled ending
This movie had the potential to be a great Western. The photography, scenery, actors, all great. The part in the mountains was as good as any movie of the genre I've seen. After leaving the mountains, the film drifted off into aimlessness.
Spoiler alert.
I would have developed the plot line between the two main characters while still in the mountains. This is the core of the story. Waiting until the end made it a bit anti-climactic and, well, stupid.
Pierce Brosnan's character also had a bit too much "Spiderman" in him, i.e., able to pull off more than the natural world would dictate.
Angelica Huston? Why? The desert? Why? The confrontation in the desert? Goofy.
They took a good start and tried to make it into something akin to "High Plains Drifter", and it didn't happen for me.
Worth seeing as the second movie of a weekend.
The Brown Bunny (2003)
Gallo whine
First, the sex scene. I thought that Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman would be the first stars to put their sex on screen in "Eyes Wide Shut". Not simulated, but real. I enjoyed seeing the sex here put into the context of the story. It belies the moral monsters who simply say it's bad in any context. The story could have continued here without the sex, but it made a very clear point within the context of the story. People "make love" all the time in other films, but you are never to see the 'real deal' so the moral monsters can feel like they won. Hurray to Gallo for putting a real sex scene in a movie to continue the 'real feel' of the movie. That is the only positive thing I will say about the movie.
I loved "Buffalo 66", which was quirky, funny and poignant. But each of Gallo's films make sure you know that it's all about Vincent. First and foremost, he must take you into a story that features his constant moping, greasiness, and always about Vincent. Can he do a story where he is a minor character? No. Why does he think that endless scenes of roads can't tell the story of despair without....10 minutes of endless road scenes? More indulgence. He treats the viewer like a moron and after awhile you ARE a moron for waiting 90 minutes to have anything resembling dialog and anything other than a guy with a camera and a hard-on for the viewer.
Free Money (1998)
Drop dead dumb
This wretched movie shows that not even some of Gollywood's best can salvage a true landfill deposit..
I could spend much time describing everything that was bad about this effort, but that would require more time and I've already wasted 91 minutes watching...IT.
Looking at it now, after Brando's death, shows how tragic the life of one of our greatest actors had become.
Donald Sutherland? Why?
I have to fill more lines to get this accepted. I have to fill more lines to get this accepted. I have to fill more lines to get this accepted.
Don't waste your time with this movie. I'm overdue to do something interesting. Bye.
Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
Conspiracy theory 101
While much was made of the sex in this movie...the real story to me was the secret group involved.
What the author/director is saying is there's groups involved in manipulating the world who don't play by any rules but their own.
They are simply above government, humanity, truth. They use governments to manipulate the common folks for their profit.
This goes along the "military-industrial complex" conspiracies operating in the U.S.
