The Wrestler (2008)
Incredible and moving
This is a film so near to perfection I do not know how to criticise it. The whole thing pivots on the performance of Mickey Rourke and the way he presents the character which he does to an astounding level of skill.
The cinematography is also stunning and really compliments the mood of the script which is perfect for the subject matter. on top of this the score really drives how the emotional plight of all the characters.
All in all i felt that Aronofsky really understood the subject matter and delivered a well thought out meaningful piece of cinema, i would give the film a 9 out of ten with its only marks being lost for the length of the film
Iron Man 2 (2010)
Awesome!
Very much enjoyed this film it had a great look and feel. I especially liked the relationship between Tony Stark and Sam Rockwells characters it was funny and looked great on screen. I thought this film was not as strong as the last one but really had some great visuals and script.
Jon Favreu really brings a unique and interesting approach to the marvel universe that i am interested to see develop into other genres. I thought the Mickey Rourke character was slightly over the top unfortunately and i failed to really see the point of his character but apart from that i really enjoyed and I'm looking forward to seeing how the story develops in the avengers movie in the coming months. So all in all i felt the film was mostly positive and I i would give it a strong 8 out of 10
How to Stop Being a Loser (2011)
Loads of fun and a lovely story
So Loser vs Twilight! So the film makers are nothing if not brave. I'm guessing the general audience who go and see romantic comedies are teenage girls, no? So why release against Twilight whose main audience is... Teenage girls, right? It's a shame because I loved this film, I thought it was so sweet and yes it had some laugh out loud moments but the love story was great and as embarrassing as it is to admit, I didn't see the end coming. I believed it was going in the direction they were taking me, that's all I'll say without risking spoilers. Martin Kemp was brilliant as the love God, he's a movie star and I'd love to see him in more movies, although his IMDb says he's now directing. A shame, too beautiful not to be on screen more. My favourite part was the outtakes at the end and that's not a back handed compliment, I really enjoyed the film but the outtakes were a riot!
Notting Hill (1999)
Perfect RomCom
There is nothing wrong with this film, it's perfect. I recently saw a brand new romcom which I enjoyed but it was nothing compared to Notting Hill. Hugh Grant is a legend and I want to see him on screen much, much more. The performances here are great, every last one of them, right down to the Asian guy who climbs up and kisses the man behind the Ritz counter. This is a film you could just watch over and over again! It launched careers and no one saw it coming at the time. What's so lovely about it is that amongst the laughs there is so much lovely and heartfelt story, it's one of those films that can make you cry and then make you laugh, what more could you ask for?! If you haven't seen it yet, then drop everything right now and go see it. Straight away!!
