Really forced the "is it a cult?" angle too much.
4 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I felt like this show misrepresents itself in the title. I feel that there are very few moments where anything cultish happens at all, and most of those saying it's a cult seem to miss the point of the community.

Can the community be toxic? Sure, doesn't mean it's a cult. Are some of the people a little unhinged? Sure, doesn't make it a cult.

Do newcomers seem to come in and immediately start wanting to make drastic decisions? Yes. Does that sometimes need to be checked? Of course, still not anything close to a cult.

This would have been better if they just billed it as a doc about intentional community, because that's what it was. The "cult or not" aspect of the show was shoehorned in to try and grab true crime fans. I enjoyed the show very much, but it's very clear anyone trying to say it's a cult is reaching.

I don't understand these other reviews

This show isn't about autism, or really Pootie even, it's about his mom. All of the things she does are for her, not Pootie. I've been a special education teacher for a decade, if you made a list of things that people with autism hate and put a bunch of them together, that would be Pootie's party. Letting him get kicked out of public pools isn't "letting him be himself", it's just terrible parenting, prevents him from having access to pools, which he loves, and makes people with autism appear to be unable to function in society. This show isn't about representation or starting a conversation about disabilities. There are wonderful shows like Love on the Spectrum on Netflix that shows what life with autism is like, and that handle the topic with grace, humor, and most importantly, respect for the individuals they are portraying. This is not that, this is narcissistic nonsense from the "cool mom that cusses and refers to her son as hot" and quite frankly feels like it's exploiting Pootie far more than its championing him.

Google "tired boomer mom jokes"...
11 May 2022
And her entire set would be there. Just the most basic, low effort trash you can imagine. And I used to be a HUGE fan of Your Mom's House, her podcast with her husband who's also a comedian. Everything about this is bad. Mostly alternating between bemoaning how soft people are today, while then complaining endlessly about things like people who don't eat gluten. She sounds like a whiny old boomer who's past her prime and can't deal with the fact the world is changing under her feet. And all of this could be forgiven if any of the material was funny, but it's not. There's very little that didn't make me feel extreme second hand embarrassment, much less make me laugh. Wow. Spend your time watching something better.

How is this rated 9.2?!?
3 October 2021
These early ratings must all be the Ghost Adventures cast. Everything about this is terrible. It's not scary, the acting is awful, the directing is awful, the color saturation is awful. The episodes are super slow for the first 30 minutes and then there's with no payoff in the last 8 minutes. Stories are VERY loosely based on the items described. Eli Roth has his name attached but doesn't direct or write any of the episodes. I was super excited for this and it's just godawful.

Francesco (2020)

What a joke....
31 March 2021
Francis tried to pretend he would be a different pope and while he talks a good game, he continues to enable the church to continue its most horrific and problematic behavior. Despite hinting at support of gay marriage, the church continues to condemn homosexuality as inherently unnatural. Francis also helped the church fight against a law that would allow abuse victims to sue the church. The church tried to use Francis to appear progressive, and he played along, to rehab some of the image of the church, but Francis is just another pedophile protector. Films like this just serve to whitewash his true legacy.

The Road Trick (2017– )

Occasionally charming, often annoying, always awkward...
2 December 2018
I wanted to like this show. It's obviously cheesy as can be right from the beginning, but I thought it might be cheesy in an endearing way. Adam has moments of charm but they're few and far between. The rest of the time is unbearably awkward. Like a reality version of Curb Your Enthusiasm, but without the self-awareness. He's pushy, entitled, and totally oblivious to social cues. He creeps on attractive young women and geeks out about talking to them like he's 12 years old.

Too painful to even finish the 10 episodes.

So, so predictable
8 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I thought that the two bits of foreshadowing in this film didn't so much hint at what was coming, but instead screamed it in your face. Reviews saying it was surprising or tense are way off. **SPOILERS**

The opening scene was so blatant, and so different from the rest of the film, that by when the video from Mexico is shown, it becomes very clear how that the film will end with trauma survivors being "put out of their misery" just like the coyote. The rest is just waiting for it to get there.

There was so little plot that the second major bit of foreshadowing (lighting the lamp) was an obvious tip off for the end.

Acting wasn't bad, but the characters didn't feel relatable and instead of building tension, most of the film felt like filler before the big finale, which in all fairness, was startling in the way it began, although not surprising.

Didn't hate it while watching it, but felt ripped off at the end. Fine for a free movie on a weekend, but not much more than that.
