The same haunted house
28 January 2015
A haunted house can only repeat its shock value so much. The Woman in Black was a successful horror film based on a novel released two years ago starring Daniel Radcliffe. The story mixes an old-fashioned setting but filled with modern horror conventions was generally well-received both critically and commercially. As the circle of horror movies go, a sequel was commissioned, albeit this time with a new cast and a story that's unrelated to the first film but set in the same creepy house that plagued the events of part one.

What audiences get is a repetition of the first film. If you enjoyed the old-style gigantic haunted house scenery of the first, there's more of that in the sequel. If you like your horror being bombarded by loud sounds and quick jolts, here you go. While the first Woman In Black was adapted from a novel by Susan Rice, part two is made of a new screenplay based on Hill's story which brings to its biggest drawback:there's nothing particularly noteworthy about its story which thrives on going through the same scenarios of the first film. Which gives the impression that the makers had not much ambition when making the sequel and likely aimed on riding on the success of the first film. A common occurrence as far as sequels go. The Woman in Black 2 unfortunately falls into that category.

Wow..
14 April 2008
I managed to catch this movie at the Singapore International Film Festival. It was only one of the few movies that I was interested in catching because the story intrigued me.Not to mention that it had a great cast too. So Romulus My Father is story centered around young Raimond and his relationships with his dad Romulus and his mother Christina. Both Romulus and Christina are migrants settling in Australia and we see the emotional toll that happens between the three of them and also with Hora and Mitru both playing a big part in the lives of those three.

From the moment Romulous stars you have this strong feeling that your in for a great movie. And trust me,during those hundred and four minutes you will see a great story of courage, love and betrayal. It is a very emotional story and brilliantly made. You just know that everyone involved in this movie put their heart and soul into it and their efforts have certainly paid off.Romulous My Father is a story that everyone can identify with. The characters in this movie and their actions leave you thinking even long after the movie has ended.

Performances naturally are one of the highpoints for this film.Nothing new for Bana and Potente here. Both of them are great which is nothing surprising here since both are very talented actors.Suppoting cast is great too,Martion Csokas and Russel Dykstra are moth magnificent. But the real show-stealer here is the young but talented Kodi Smit McPhee who plays the young Raimond. His role is not an easy role to portray yet he does it with such confidence. You feel for him,for everything he has to go through with his parents and every scene he's in is just brilliant.Move over Dakota Fanning, this kid is here to stay! Romulus my father is one solid drama, with a captivating story that everyone can relate to. Not to mention is vibrant cinematography and top-notch acting. Its one of the films where it deserves a bigger release and seen by a wider audience. One can only hope that happens.

One of my favourite movies of 2008 !
10 April 2008
Yep who knew an idea about two men about to die can be so enjoyable and uplifting? The Bucket List worked on only one thing: The chemistry between Edward and Carter (of course played by Nicholson and Freeman). Both are as different as oil and water : Edward is well-off,flamboyant yet stubborn while Carter is more quiet, intelligent and philosophical.Yet they meet one day in the same hospital room, both suffering from a terminal disease with only little time left.So they end up hating each other, then taking a liking and a mutual understanding for each other.

Then came the Bucket List, something Carter made up,things they have always wanted to do and Edward with all his wealth left behind, convinces Carter (and his reluctant wife) to go and pursue those unfinished dreams..And you name it,they do it : Skydiving, traveling around the world in a private jet, patching up thing with estranged loved ones. All that before they, well, kick the bucket.

So it might not be realistic at parts, like traveling lavishly, but this is such a feel good film,it doesn't come off as corny or cheesy in parts and instead what it did to me was that I ended up smiling by the end of the movie, and that dosen't happen very often.Nicholson is hilarious with his one-liners and and his familiar stubbornness that we've proceed to experience over the years. We've seen him in similar roles before, yet he has the power to charm the audience every damn movie.Morgan Freeman, like Nicholson,we've seen him in similar roles but the powerful persona he brings to the screen about a quiet, loving, intelligent man about to die is a treat.

Yes,its not a flawless film, nothing much of a script, yet its a great film, which fills you up with emotions during every scene and I'm very glad I saw it.And if you happen to be reading this,do see it too,you just might end up loving it just like I did..

Movie review:Kite Runner
25 January 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I've been waiting for this a long time.I first read the book early last year and have remembered every bit of it since then. Now on to its movie adaptation.I realized it was not going to be an easy movie to make because the book had a lot to tell.Nevetherless, director Marc Forster has made a satisfying adaptation that will please those who haven't read the book. But for those who have, well just don't expect a masterpiece like the book was.

Kite Runner tells the story of two children,Amir and Hassan growing up in Kabul.Amir and his father live together in a house while Hassan and his father work for them. The first half of the film shows us the childhood of Amir and his friendship with Hassan.Their love of kite flying is portrayed beautifully here. The competition scenes are done breathtaking.

The second half,we see Amir as an adult living in America, his beautiful marriage and the big rescue that followed. Here I felt that some scenes could have been better shot, such as the scene where Rahim Khan reveals Hassan's fate to Amir in Peshwar. The conclusion as well, was a little bit different from the book, but will probably please those who haven't read the book.

I knew that this was not going to be an easy movie to make. However director Marc Forster has done his best. The child actors who portrayed Amir,Hassan and Aseef have all done excellent jobs, especially Ahmad Khan who portrayed young Hassan.Khalid Abdalla does the role of Amir just right.Kudos to Shaun Taub and Homayoun Ershadi.

All in all Forster does a satisfying job making a book come to life. For those who haven't read the book: what are you waiting for? If you liked the movie, you'd LOVE the book.As a movie i give this a seven out of ten. It's not the best adaptation of a book, but its not terrible either.

Thankfully,more good than bad kahaniyaans!
11 December 2007
Thankfully,Dus Kahaniyaan has more good kahaniyaans than bad ones. Here

are some stories that didin't match up:

High on the Highway directed by Hansal Mehta starring Jimmy Sheirgill. Didn't do it for me.I felt bored quickly. This was ten minutes long but it felt much longer to me.The story was pretty bad and the acting got annoying after awhile.

Sex on the Beach directed by Apoorva Lakhia and starring Dino Morea. With a title like that and *taring Dino, you probably know what your'e getting into! Its a supernatural thriller and some parts in the beginning did keep you interested but the ending totally killed the movie.

Rise and Fall directed by Sanjay Gupta Starring Sanjay Dutt and Suneil Shetty.

No,its not totally bad.But for most part,it does leave you confused .Good performances,no doubt, but definitely could have been better handled.

Love Dale by Jasmeet Dhodi starring Anupan Kher and Aftab. A modest debut by Dhodi.Sweet story but predictable.

The rest of the stories were good.Sticking out are Rice Plate starring Nasseruddin and Shabana and Gubbare mainly because of Nana Patekar.

Overall,DK does have enough stories to keep you entertained for two hours. The song in the end was nice but unnecessary.

Cashback (2006)
7/10
Surprised!
8 August 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I'm usually not a big fan of romantic films but since this flick was highly recommended I decided to take a chance. And boy was I surprised! Cashback focuses on art student Ben Willis who had just had a stormy break-up with his girlfriend.Unable to get over it,he develops insomnia. To kill time,he starts to work at the local supermarket. There, his artistic side and his fascination of the female body starts to work overtime. There are also quirky characters such as Ben's two co-workers,an eccentric boss and a female colleague which he eventually falls for. Also not mentioning his promiscuous best friend.

Cashback has both elements of drama and comedy. The intensity of the film goes high but the comedy also reminds you to have a good time. The experiences faced by Ben are realistic and that's what makes this movie good. His ability to freeze time and undressing women in the supermarket adds something unique(wish i had that ability too)to this indie gem.Ben's colleagues at the supermarket are hilarious with their zany pranks..The love story between Ben and Sharon (his female colleague) unravels in the second half quite nicely at that.

There are some clichés however, only towards the ending but who cares?..Cashback was definitely a surprise, a unique perspective of life, love and everything between for Ben Willis.Worth-watching.

Ta Ra Rum Pum (2007)
Feel Good entertainer sums up Tara Rum Pum.
11 May 2007
Siddarth Anand is back in the director's seat after giving us Salaam Namaste. This time,Saif Ali Khan plays Rajveer Singh aka RV who is a successful race car driver. He is joined by his wive Radhika aka Shona(played none other by Rani Mukherji) and their two children,Champ and Princess.

The first half we see RV having a rags to riches story from being a tyre changer to a successful race car driver. He is joined by Billy from "Speeding Saddles",a disintegrating race company. He also falls in love with Radhika and we see their courtship to their eventual marriage.Following that they have 2 kids and a wonderful house and a wonderful life.

So that's that right? Apparently not.RV's career takes a turn for the worst when he gets involved in an accident during one of his racing stints. One year later,he attempts to get back into the racing game but memories from his accident still haunt him to this day.He eventually gets fired from Speeding Saddles.Money is now suddenly a big issue and the family of five (of course the would have to include a pet dog wouldn't they?)have to experience to live the hard life.

The first half is filled with racing scenes (surprisingly well done)and as mentioned we see the courtship of Saif and Rani complete with two songs "Ab to Forever" and "Hey Shona".Second half we see the family of five living the hard life but yet ending the day with a positive outlook on life, that tomorrow will be a better day.

The film picks up toward the second half. The family of four (excluding Bruno, the dog) have good chemistry together.Saif and Rani, two strong performers together with the two children entertain us throughout. Its a feel good movie that ought to be watched with the whole family.Siddarth is still clearly missing his "Salaam Namaste" days where Javeed recycles his jokes and the restaurant manager from SN is also back in this film.Is this film hard hitting? No.But nonetheless, you are sure to have a good time.

The hills may have eyes, but it dosen't have brains!
25 April 2007
In 2006,we had a remake of the hills have eyes, where a family traveling through the New Mexico desert get stalked by a group of disfigured mutants. The first part worked because you end up sympathizing with the family especially during parts where they were being terrorized by the mutants. However, its sequel just tarnishes the good reputation the first one had.The sequel revolves around a group of National Guard trainees who find themselves face to face with our disfigured friends.

Unfortunately,we never end up sympathizing with the characters in this one.Basically, the whole movie is about showing as much violence and gore as possible and that's it.You just see a cat and mouse game between the trainees and the mutants throughout the film.So just stick with the first part, the sequel offerers you nothing new and its riddled with clichés and stuff we have all seen before.Watch it on DVD if you must but its seriously a waste of time in the cinema.

Wicked!
15 February 2007
I've been waiting to see this for a long time! Judi Dench plays Barbra Covett,a stern and lonely schoolteacher whom none of her colleagues really like. Then enter Sheba Hart played by Cate Blanchett,a new teacher whom Barbra takes a liking to.She finds herself connected to Sheba and that soon grows into attraction. And then Barbra finds out that Sheba is having a torrid affair with one of her 15 year old students...And then Barbra realizes that the ball is suddenly in her court..Notes gets you hooked from the very beginning especially with the performances.Dame Judy Dench obviously steals the show, playing Barbra, the lonely school teacher who finds a connection with her new colleague..Her presence is deeply felt and throughout the film you'll find yourself hooked on to Dench's character while she writes all her experiences with Sheba in her diary.Blanchett gives another sincere performance, followed by Alan Rickman who plays her husband.Overall,Notes is a wickedly good film and you'll quickly find yourself hooked on to the story...But watch out for Dame Judy Dench for she just might keep you glued to your seat anticipating her every move!

The Holiday (2006)
7/10
Good light-hearted rom-com
23 December 2006
The Holiday is a decent holiday flick from Nancy Meyers. It stars Cameron Diaz ,Kate Winslet,Jude Law and Jack Black in lead roles. The story's about Cameron and Kate who decide to swap their homes and finding love along the way. Kate Winslet is awesome.I tought she stole the show. The other three leads are in top form. This flick has some good moments in it.Once such scene was the confrontation between Winslet and her ex-boyfriend.Law and Black have smaller roles than our main leads. However, they make their presence felt throughout.

Overall, the holiday is a charming and light-hearted flick that romantic comedy lovers will love. Its a simple movie but strong in its content. So if your'e in the mood for a good romantic comedy, then the holiday is just perfect.

The Descent (2005)
7/10
Movie review:The descent
10 November 2006
The Descent starts off with a group of gal-pals going rafting. After that,a tragic accident occurs that leaves one girl's husband and child killed.Later, the girls meet up again, this time with new friends to go caving. This time, their expedition is going to be much more horrifying than ever...

The descent starts off as a standard thriller as we see the accident, and get to know the girls a little better in the first half. The caving scenes are well-shot.They tend to be boring at first and you keep hoping something exciting would happen. And it does happen indeed! The second half goes on to be a horrifying journey as the girls find out that they are not the only ones in the cave...Scary and exciting, the second half makes you squirm as the girls run and scream and try to live...

Overall the descent starts off rather boring and unexciting but its the second half where the descent shines where the girls have a horrifying encounter.Worth a watch, especially for horror fans!

Worth a watch!
6 November 2006
I was pretty excited to see this film as it has a great star cast of Paul Rudd,Danny Devito and Mischa Barton. This flick was released in Singapore with a limited release so it was no so easy for me to catch it.But I did after all and boy,was it good! THe OH in OHIO tells about a married couple and the wife's inability to have an "orgasm"...This causes a rift between the couple as the wife tries to find various ways to pleasure herself.Meanwhile, the husband played by Paul Rudd has an affair with his seductive student played by Mischa Barton.

This movie has a lot of comedic moments mostly involving Parker Posey and her quest for her sexual desires.Paul Rudd fits in nicely as the frustrated husband who just cant give his wife an orgasm.Mischa Barton had a rather small role but it was cool to see her in the big screen.Danny Devito was rather disappointing. This is not his best work and one fells that he should have more depth to his role. The show stealer,Parker Posey, does an amazing job as the successful wife who just considers sex with her husband as a"chore" and goes on to find out the joy of sex.The ending of the film is pretty abrupt but in a way,it fitted in well with the film.

Overall,The OH in Ohio is a funny little flick where audiences are bound to enjoy themselves and have a fun time.Worth a watch!

Movie review: Jaan-E-Mann
21 October 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I saw this on the first day itself.I was very excited to see Salman,Akshay and Preity on screen together coz the trailers itself looked appealing.

So does Jaan-E-Mann disappoint? You betcha not! In fact, this movie makes the "love-triangle" saga seem new!

First the movie starts off with Akshay kumar narrating the story of our three characters Suhaan,Ahgastya and Piya. The movie starts of well and makes the viewer interested. We follow the character's lives from present time to flashbacks in college. The first-half itself has its share of comedy moments but also sad ones as we learn about Suhaan and Piya's relationship.

Then we follow Suhaan and Agastya to New York as Suhaan coaches Agastya to woo Piya. The scenes are beautiful and cinematography is excellent. The songs are melodious and beautifully picturised.

OK now for the bad points...i felt that Anupam Kher's character was wasted.he had almost no significance in a role that actually wasn't easy to enact. Also, the second half of the film gets a bit draggy.Ironically, the director,Sirish Kunder is an editor for films..

Performance wise Salman and Akshay are awesome. Both enact their parts with ease and great passion. Can't wait to see them on the big screen again. Both were amazing, its really difficult to pick one. Preity Zinta is BEAUTIFUL.Every single time she comes on screen,I was absorbed..she does justice to her role as Piya. One feels the director should have given her more scope..but she did well anyway.

Overall, kudos to the main three leads! They are the heart and soul of Jaan-E-Mann.This flick is enjoyable from beginning to end.I would recommend this to anyone who is willing to have a good time with laughter and tears.Granted not all is perfect with the film as i mentioned earlier, but with so many positive points holing it together, who cares.

Jaan-E-Mann is the type of film whereby when you see it once, you'd want to see it over and over again and it would be just as,if more enjoyable than the last time. So,yeah,go watch Jaan-E-Mann and have a good time!

Supporting actors steal KANK
14 August 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Alright I don't need to explain the synopsis..I'm sure most of you guys know.Anyways,in case, this is the story of Dev and Rhea played by Shahrukh and Preity.Another couple is Rishi and Maya played by Abhishek and Rani. Both couples are having unhappy marriages.Basically Maya and Dev have an encounter.Few years later they have another encounter. This time however, the circumstances would be much different..

The 1st half of KANK was filled with jokes,Karan style.First of all,the jokes were enjoyable. The 1st half also introduces us to the characters. The 1st half is handled quite well by Karan.Audiences were nicely enjoying themselves too.

The second half is of course, more dramatic and their respective marriages keep tumbling down and Dev and Maya's attraction for each other grows by the minute. In my opinion, the dramatic scenes were handled quite well. The tensions between the couples were nicely played out.The stand-out scene was when Dev and Maya revealed to their respective spouses about their affairs..

Now for the bad part: This story focused too much on Dev and Maya.I thought the best performances were by Abhishek and Preity and its a shame that they didn't get more screen time. Also the ending was way disappointing and way too clichéd..That was a very sad thing to see especially when a basically good movie is marred by its ending.

Performances are basically good.SRK is as his usual self. His spats with Rhea is the highlight of his performance.Rani does a good job as the confused wife. But i still think that her performance in "black" was better than this (unlike what indiafm.com reviewer Taran Ardash said).

And the award goes to Abhishek and Preity for their outstanding performances.AB has really improved himself and he is really a joy to watch throughout the movie!Preity looks stunning throughout and even though she had a smaller role than the others, she manages to make her presence felt.

This film is not horrible.Sure people may disagree but I think KANK is a movie whereby you should watch it and have your own opinion. In conclusion I think this a much better turn from the sappy K3G that Mr Johar has given us a few years ago.Yes,i think this film is worth a look, but don't go in watching expecting a happy film.

The Omen (2006)
4/10
A good remake..
6 June 2006
I had recently watched The Omen and I must say it is really quite an enjoyable spook fest.Acting was done pretty well by the main leads.Mia Farrow did awesome. The kid whom played Damien was pretty effective in looking creepy (though not all the time). This movie was indeed quite creepy and keeps the viewer interested throughout.I must say that this was one of the few movies that made audience scream instead of laugh in the cinemas!

Overall,i think those who haven't watched the original Omen will probably enjoy this more than those who have....But even those who have watched the original will probably be pleased about this remake.

When Nick met Ambar....
21 September 2005
As most of you know Salaam Namste was set in Melbourne,Australia. This is a story about Nick and Ambar(played by Saif and Priety) who met at a wedding, liked each other and decided to live with each other without being married.Well, this is quite a new concept with Indian cinema but it is handled well.I think the younger generation will appreciate it more than the older generation of today.Of course there are loads of comedy to keep you laughing...(Javed Jaffery was hilarious!)And special appearances too.Saif and Priety have good chemistry together, they handle their scenes well.Overall SN is a worthwhile film handled well in way that you will leave the movie hall satisfied and not disappointed.Well,i certainly was satisfied! This delicate subject was surprisingly handled well(I had low expectations of this) Verdict:A film once in a whice that's worth watching.9.5/10
