LOL - Hasse Toh Phasse (2021)
Rarely has the Indian audience been subjected to this cringe and abomination in the name of comedy
The concept is good and has been implemented pretty well elsewhere. I have watched the entire six hours of the German version which was mildly annoying but overall quite amusing.
But the Indian edition is watered down in terms of production value and inflated in terms of bad Jokes and is an absolute waste of your time and Amazon's money.
Even reliable people like Sunil Grover are reduced to caricatures. Boman and Arsad are at their worst jokes also. Overall an abysmal low for Amazon.
Vir Das: Outside in - The Lockdown Special (2020)
Pathetic attempt at comedy
The format is boring. They show you half second cuts of the screen in between and it just doesn't work.
Vir Das is witty in spurts. He doesn't have material and banter with audience isn't really great.
Hands down one of the worst of Vir Das ever.
Bhaag Beanie Bhaag (2020)
Lazy writing and Direction - Formulaic and a bad formula
Bhaag Beanie Bhaag is plagued with lazy writing and direction. The only bright spot happens to be Swara Bhaskar. I am not a fan, but she manages to do a good job in a badly written and directed project.
For a series about standup comedy the jokes are really lame. Sample this - If your family is samosa you can't expect salsa - or something similar. Why is that expected to be funny? Why is anything that the writers write in the series supposed to be funny?
For a project filled with quite a few standup comics in cameos and bits and pieces roles, it bombs like the worst standup comedy bit ever.
Netflix India needs to up its game. Amazon Prime is simply superior in all its originals. The creative people involved in the project must introspect.
Hasmukh (2020)
Pathetic implementation of an interesting premise
The writing is lazy, insincere and inconsistent.
Direction is amateurish.
Only Ranvir Shorey and Manoj Pahwa fit their roles.
Vir Das is such a misfit in this role. His effort is apparent but sadly inadequate. Mostly side actors are miscast.
Overall Netflix continues to disappoint with a promise of great interest.
Pata Nahi Par Bolna Hai: A Comedy Special by Karunesh Talwar (2019)
Stoned comedian with bad jokes
I liked some of the standup material that Karunesh had built over a period of time. However, this special is anything but special. It's such a waste of an opportunity. And no one but Karunesh is to be blamed. He just chose to show up absolutely stoned for the show. I mean absolutely pupils dilated stoned. He forgets lines, he just stares, he slurs, he stammers, he does all sorts of crap except totally lose it. The jokes fall flat. There's no sense of timing. There's no thinking on your feet improvisation. There's nothing that a decent comedy should have.
Absolute waste of opportunity. Absolutely sub par - unprofessional.
Leila (2019)
Not entirely rubbish but pretentious beyond compare
It's not entirely rubbish. But the concept to execution is just to spread Hindu phobia. While the truth is the exact opposite. More political and propaganda orientated than any of what Netflix has done as content for India.
The premise itself is not only fantastic but full of political and communal allegory.
Leila pretends to be in the mould of cult classics but disappoints sorely. It's insincere and insidious.
Comicstaan (2018)
Badly made show with a bunch of talented comics and half talented judges
Has to be the best idea with the worst execution by Amazon in India.
The 7th episode is an unmitigated disaster and shows what passes for comedy for these people.
Tanmay is the worst judge.
There are a couple of judges you'd never have heard of.
The hosts are so boring!
The contestants are pretty good though.
