Bed & Breakfast (1997)
Put this gem back on TV
I find it very, very strange that there is no re-run of this series. It was one of the first Dutch comedies i saw and liked. Somebody at the dutch public television should dust of the old tapes and show it again. Even it was at night, good comedy like this is just to hard to come by.
I especially liked the episode when Jack Wouterse was running around with a chainsaw, killing everybody in his way. If i remember correctly, this was also the episode when Baantjer came in. And the running gag with NokNok is also a keeper, "biertje? gesjchellig!".
Also, Wouterse appears to have reached the ultimate cult status an actor in the Netherlands can get. For me, he is one of the few actors that i admire. Temmink, Vet Hard, All Stars and other work of him are the reasons, but i always keep thinking of him in his amazing role as Dirk. "Nobody f***s with Dirk!"
Well, this is my call to somebody with power. Put this gem back on TV.
Doomwatch (1972)
Probably the most realistic movie about the environment ever
Whenever I want to watch a late-night BBC movie, I always check the IMDb site first to find out if it is worth to stay up for. At first I had my doubts about this one, but I'm certainly glad to have seen it.
Without being patronizing, idealistic or action filled, this movie is the most realistic movies about the environment. Some might say it lacks gore and monsters, but that is not the point of this film. It has interesting twists and turns and the characters all are reacting very unexpected. Again, this may confuse the average Sylvester Stallone fan, but for me it was very pleasant to see a movie with intelligent plot.
The movie could be seen as some thriller/horror crossover, but the strange thing about this one is that the story isn't about zombies and that it has a unsatisfying ending, which is good. No pointing fingers, no big stormy weather scenes and no action hero stuff.
If you hated "The day after tomorrow", you'll like this one. Cause this one might prove that environmentalists aren't always right...
I give this one a 8/10
Gummo (1997)
Possibly one of the weirdest movies i've ever seen.
I once saw this film late at night, I believe it was on Belgian TV. It took me a long time to find it on IMDb, cause I couldn't remember the title.
Possibly one of the weirdest movies I've ever seen. At first i thought it was an impression on the lives of people in a backward American community, but later one I started to think about the movie as a random compilation of absurd and disturbing scenes. It's not art, because it is not pretending to be and it is not a documentary about 'white trash'.
It is very easy to hate a film like this. It is ugly, disturbing and it makes you feel very uncomfortable. But the strange thing is that it gets you. There are some scenes in there that you will never forget.
That's why I recommend this film to anyone who enjoys the experimental type of movies. After you've seen this, you've certainly seen something special.
