Carving a Life (2017)
Touching indie drama
So glad I found this indie gem! This touching drama centers around the ups and downs of a relationship challenged and tested by addiction and it's destructive forces. The lead actors have undeniable chemistry which makes the journey more believable and makes you the viewer have a stake in whether they will persevere. Highly recommended!
Before the Dawn (2019)
Beautiful film about forbidden love
Stumbled upon this indie gem! I love films that portray conflicted characters in complicated and unique situations. Alana de Freitas delivers an extraordinary performance by lending nuance and sympathy to Lila. I was completely sold on her attraction to Jason and their chemistry. I was impressed to discover that she also wrote and produced the film...she is definitely someone to watch and follow. Very well done film!
Lion Killer (2019)
Love's power to heal
Really enjoyed this sweet story about two souls struggling to overcome their past traumas. The director clearly has a specific POV reflected in the tone and aesthetic of the film. It was refreshing to watch a film that revolves around real issues and self-discovery. We all have our struggles in life and I found the individual arcs of Michael and Noelle very relatable. Definitely worth watching!
Know Your Enemy (2019)
Cultural Divides Overcome
In Know Your Enemy director Randy Feldman prompts us to think outside ourselves and our experiences to try and understand why someone who considered "the other" might be driven to the brink of madness. Most importantly it is about connection and wanting to be seen for who you are, not how you look, talk or which religion you observe. The film was very well made - sophisticated camerawork, incredible performances (particularly by Farshad Farahat) who makes you sympathize for his character despite having invaded a couple's home and threatening them with a gun. I was especially impressed with how captivated I was with the film despite it almost being set in entirely one location. A relevant film for our times!
Stadium Anthems (2018)
Fun music mockumentary
If you're a music lover and craving a film that takes the male-dominated, chauvinistic music industry and turns it on its head - watch this. It's funny but also clever in the way it addresses the changes the music industry was forced to endure with the introduction of the internet, Napster and iTunes. The film has memorable characters who deliver hilarious lines such as "This data is uglier than the back of my large balls." Director Brown has crafted a polished and entertaining film that will continue to attract many fans.
Return to Horror Hotel (2019)
Imaginative and original horror
This unique horror anthology comprised of four films will keep you at the edge of your seat. Compelling performances and great sound design told in a somewhat zany and campy style. I appreciated the unique voice of the filmmaker and his imaginative take on the horror genre.
Bigger Than the Game (2018)
A great basketball movie
I thoroughly enjoyed this film. Warrior Pride tells the story of a coach trying to keep his team together despite all the pressures and struggles the players and he face in their private lives. The film has a very naturalistic feel which makes sense as it's based on a true story. The world, the characters and the dialogue feel extremely authentic. Rockey Black's performance is illuminating - I hope to see more of him!
Dirty Beautiful (2015)
Indie Gem!
I'm so glad I stumbled upon this indie gem! The film drew me in from the very first image and then surprised me in a way I was not expecting - I was sold! The story revolves around David's search for love and companionship and is one all viewers can identify with. Aside from the charming and unexpected story of David and Cat's relationship, the filmmaking craft was on full display - from the excellent casting to the arresting cinematography, great choices of music and heartbreaking performances. Watch this film - it will make you laugh, cry and motivate you to make your dreams a reality!
