The Gray Man (2022)
Lighten up and enjoy the action
Yes it's forgettable, silly and shallow. Absolutely. It won't work at all on a small screen. But ... it has some hilariously fun action scenes, a sharp script, likeable actors and performances, good score and fast pacing. As a popcorn guzzling fight fest to enjoy on the big screen with proper surround sound it is simply good fun. Chris Evan's character is the standout one: a pumped up moustachioed psycho who is quite happy to blow up half of Prague. Ryan Gosling is solid, but his character, and Ana de Armas's, has no real empathy with the viewer, being sketched only superficially. I think negative reviewers are misreading the intent of this film. It is clearly not trying to be serious so don't give it 2 stars for not being serious.
No Time to Die (2021)
You'll want to die at half time
Dour and protracted, this film has some spectacular scenes but unfortunately makes no sense. The Italy motorbike scene and the credits were the best thing. Craig looks so bored and uncomfortable at times. The evil mastermind turns out to be mind bogglingly flacid, pathetic and dull.
Still, the new female characters are good, as well as Ralph Fiennes and Rory Kinnear who are excellent as always, and the film overall is ok, it's just not a Bond film. Cut down by 45 minutes it could actually be a pretty decent, if forgettable, action flick. Looking forward to a reboot.
The King of Staten Island (2020)
What cinema is about. A gem.
Very funny, sharp script, strong casting, acting and cinematography. As my friend said after the screening, "it's been a long time since I've seen a film that good". There's an undercurrent of sadness which lends the film extra weight too. A film that will stay with you. Highly recommended.
Back to Life (2019)
Dark comedy set against bleak coastal backdrop
Powerful, darkly hilarious, moving and with strong performances all round, this is a production that does not sugar coat English small town life for an American audience. By contrast the characters are eminently British, raw and genuine and the dull grey of the south east coastline is portrayed without sentiment. "Back to Life" will appeal to anyone who likes fresh unformulaic drama. It revels in a sharp script and hilarious cringe worthy moments. Hats off to the cast who are all exceptional.
The Commuter (2018)
Worst film script of 2018?
So bad I had to write a review! Is this a joke?
Utterly terrible script that makes no sense, an action film that's so boring I had to forward several sections and wooden acting that compounds the viewer's misery even further.
Leeson has the charisma of a carpet, but he's still likeable. Hence not giving it 1 star.
