Real Steel (2011)

Not only does it have fighting robots, it also has a great script and great acting!

Warning: Spoilers
I went in expecting "Rocky with Robots", in other words, not a whole lot. But I was really surprised by just how well crafted and solid this movie is. It's not quite Oscar fodder, but the script is well written, the acting is pretty good all around, and it's got robots beating the snot out of each other. And who doesn't like seeing robot violence?

A special mention needs to be made of Hugh Jackman, who turns in yet another wonderful performance here. Hopefully this film will bring him to new audiences, but I still feel that he's such a great actor and that he's almost criminally underused. Kevin Durand also has a good outing as a delightfully sketchy fight promoter, he's the closest thing that this film really has to a villain and he manages to absolutely make your skin crawl within seconds of appearing - a real "love to hate" sort of performance.

A trainwreck
1 October 2011
You don't watch a series like this expecting a life-changing experience or Shakespearean wit, but I was at least hoping for some mindlessly entertaining action and crime solving. Unfortunately, this programme couldn't even deliver that. The acting is very flat, the script is nonsensical and the plot makes no sense. The Angels seem to have been picked based on their looks and willingness to wear skimpy clothes rather than any particular charisma or talent. Even if you're building your series around providing eye candy, you still need some comic relief, some witty dialogue, or at least something to concentrate on during yet another motion-sickness inducing shaky-cam sequence.

I would be really surprised if this disaster lasts more than a season or two.
