In the Dust of the Rabbi (2006)
Percy Jackson understand Greek Culture better
This was interesting, and I enjoyed seeing the places. But the speaker had a less than accurate understanding of Greek and Roman life and culture.
These are places that the early Christians moved and worshiped and some of the history is very interesting. The discussion of the minister's beliefs is his own opinion of the meaning of a variety of texts. His conclusions are specific to his understanding, and many times he points out that he doesn't know the information, but is using his imagination to fill in holes in that knowledge.
Any tween or teen who has read Percy Jackson and the Rick Riordan books will have a better under of Greek and Roman culture.
Totsuzen! Neko no kuni banipal witt (1995)
Great movie for kids and their adults
Love this movie!
Two human siblings end up in the magical land of Banipal Wit, a cat kingdom, where they must fix a problem the big brother caused when he mistreated his dog, Papadoll. They have a time limit, because on their second day in the magic land they will become monsters, just as Papadoll has done!
Banipal Wit is charming, and its cat inhabitants are fun. The princess is over the top, but you can empathise with her up to a point. After causing the death of a Magician's daughter, she is cursed that every thing living that she touches turns to a balloon.
When this movie came out our kids loved it so much that we had to buy it on DVD. When their friends saw it, they wanted a copy of it (2 of ours walked off with someone).
Bought a copy for my brand new nephew recently, and my spouse and I enjoyed it just as much now as we did with our own kids!
Tobruk (2008)
The Red Badge of Courage, set during Tobruk
This excellent movie follows the Czechoslovakian soldiers who fought with the Allies in the Desert War during World War 2. Do not expect a glorification of the entire Tobruk battle. This is the story of a particular group, and what they experienced. This is an updating of the Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane - a story based on the realization by a young man of exactly what war is.
The young man's ideas of honor and the fight for a moral imperative are destroyed by the horrors of the war. This story brings home exactly what troops went through in those battles.
We watched with subtitles, but even without knowing the language, the actors brought the meaning through the language barrier.
Special effects are amazing. There is full frontal nudity during a shower scene, and horrific - but not out of place - gore.
The Dead Don't Die (2019)
So many cultural references in this small treasure!
If you've watched decades worth of zombie/ghoul pictures, and appreciate the whole concept of an "in joke", then this movie is for you. So many little touches make this slow paced, but lovely little movie shine.
Sherlock Holmes and the Baker Street Irregulars (2007)
If you love Holmes, don't bother with this one.
Well, if you're not a Sherlock Holmes fan, this might work for you. If you love or know Holmesian stories, then the wild and nonsensical divergences from canon will irritate you.
It's not the WORST Sherlock Holmes series I've seen, but it's really not very good. Even with Jonathan Pryce in it.
Also, David Bowie's China Girl while they're exploring China town? So out of place.
