ABC Weekend Specials: The Velveteen Rabbit (1985)
A Gentle Reminder of our Youth
When I was a kid, Saturday morning cartoons were a real classic treat. Having a bowl of cereal, watching shows like G.I. Joe, Transformers, Dungeons and Dragons were the norm. Then there was the ABC Weekend Specials. I remember watching this as a kid. Now that I'm older, I'm watching it again and getting a completely different outlook on what life is like. "The Velveteen Rabbit" is one of those stories of Robert and a child's toy that was loved beyond compare. The rabbit's only wish, after talking to The Skin Horse, was to become real. Even though a toy, he was loved and that made him feel real. But, through a cruel twist of fate, Robert got sick and because of the germs that caused his sickness, the toys had to be burned. However, it was through an act of love that saved the toy rabbit and turned him from a toy, to a real rabbit. Towards the end of the film, Velvee, now a real rabbit, sees his friend to feel a true hug and thank him for making him real. I'm not gonna lie about it, watching this reminds me of what life was like. The overall simplicity of things, being young, having life less complicated than it is now, is a gentle reminder of a much happier time for me....as well as others who might have seen it. We tend to forget our childhood at times, but because there are those who care to keep films and animated specials such as this alive, we are able to relive those times again and again. It is also the sort of story to tell our children and future generations to hold on to what is most near and dear to us, to never lose that sense of innocence, that life, for all that it is worth, isn't all that ugly and mean that it is now sometimes.
