Fool Me Once (2024)
Poor acting throughout
There are some pretty major plot holes in this series, but I can overlook those as I'm not a drama purist.
What bothered me was the terrible acting, from several members of the cast. Expressionless and stiff characters, flat tone of voice. Most of the characters were not very relatable. The best character by far is Detective Kierce, who shows a range of emotions as he deals with personal anguish.
There were plenty of drama/horror cliches and lots of unrealistic moments - the ease with which a petite woman takes down tall men, the wild car chases, the rogue police detective, the investigative journalist who is also an elite hacker and has a lair in the woods? Come on.
There were a lot of characters and I found it hard to keep up with them all. Quite a few didn't seem to have much to do with the story.
At the end, I didn't feel satisfied by the grand reveal. Too many loose ends were not tied up and I was left with more questions than answers.
Ultimately this series had a lot of potential, and I was entertained by watching it over the course of a week, but I don't think the writing or the acting were very good.
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022)
Weak and predictable storyline
I took my daughter to see this as she's a fan of the Puss in Boots character, and I normally like animated kids films too. It was an inoffensive family movie, but I felt that the storyline was weak and predictable with a typical cop-out ending. There were a few funny moments but it was mostly slapstick rather than clever humour.
The animation style was unusual. During normal scenes, Puss and the other characters looked their normal 3D selves, and the backgrounds had the impression of an oil painting. But during action scenes (and there were quite a few), the characters took on a more 2D, anime-like appearance. The frame rate dropped right down, reinforcing the anime look. I found the effect quite jarring and the "flick book" frame rate was quite distracting for me.
My daughter enjoyed it, but it felt like the Puss franchise has probably run its course. I wouldn't watch it again.
Cats & Dogs 3: Paws Unite (2020)
Terrible even for its genre
I took my 5yo daughter to see this because she is crazy about any film with animals. Unfortunately it was such a bad film that it didn't hold her attention and she was bored. Other kids in the cinema were restless too.
It has no real storyline, terrible acting, terrible CGI and it just fell so far short of what we expect from kids animal films these days. Total waste of time and money.
Cats (2019)
Boring
I just went to see the film adaption of Cats - I think it has to be one of the worst films I've ever seen.
The film itself was largely devoid of storyline and frankly quite boring. The visuals were nice but overall it was gaudy. The choreography was OK but the vocal performances were questionable.
The CGI and the movements of the actors was interesting but only for a few minutes. The way the cats moved varied throughout the film (walking on two feet or four feet) and I noticed a few errors in the sizes of the cats compared to their props & scenery.
All of the sung parts seemed to be recorded 'dry', without any acoustics appropriate to the setting of the scene, which really spoiled the realism for me. Sounded just like the actors were in a vocal booth, two inches from the microphone.
Several people walked out of the cinema halfway through, and I don't blame them. I stayed until the end in case it got better, but it didn't.
