Devil May Call (2013)
A Really Intense Thriller
If you're looking for a movie to make you jump out of your seat this is it. The setting in a dilapidated building at night really adds to the creepy factor. Corri English is really convincing in her portrayal of a blind woman and her confidence while roaming around alone makes for a terrifying movie. I wanted to yell at her to be careful - a lot. Van Hansis is great as Jess. He's the typical sensitive insightful guy in a helping profession who you'd want on your side against a killer. There is one scene when he talks about being a bully and, in my opinion, it was the best "non-scary" scene in the film. Tyler Mane is his usual scary self and the stunt work in the scene with him and Van is pretty great. Check this one out if you want to be creeped out.
Occupant (2011)
I left the theater shaking!!!
I attended the screening of this film at the Gotham Screen International Film Festival in NYC. I really didn't know what to expect but had seen the trailers and was intrigued. This film far exceeded my expectations. It was everything a dark psychological thriller should be. Suspenseful, intense, shocking, twisted and thought provoking. The set and cinematography created a certain mood that just added to the Polanski- esque feel of the film.
By the middle of the film, I felt like I was taking a journey into the disturbed mind of Danny Hill. Van Hansis' flawless performance made me both afraid of him and for him. He is definitely a sympathetic character. I could feel his pain and confusion as the movie progressed. His horror at what he had become by the end of the movie was palpable.
This is a movie that has no need to typical horror gimmicks or gratuitous gore and violence. I still don't really know if there was anything supernatural occurring in apartment 1003 or if it was all in Danny's mind. At the end of the film, I was left speechless and wondering about the writer, Jonathan Brett, and what goes in HIS mind that he created this story.
