Abigail (2019)
Not Terrible But Dubbing Killed It for Me
I watched the preview, and it looked pretty cool. Like the steampunk aesthetic. The magical weaponry was a tad more inventive than the standard light rays or fireballs.
The story was a bit much. I mean, really. I almost didn't even watch given recent events. But anyways, weird story. Not really convincing characters. All of that would be kinda par for the course for a lot of stuff these days, but the weird dubbed voice overs were unbearable. I couldn't finish it, even half watching. What's weird is it looks like they're speaking English. Other folks say Russian. I dunno. I thought the lips looked "almost" right. /shrug.
Slay Belles (2018)
Surprisingly Good
I recently watched WW84, and this was better than that.
I mean, I'm sure the budget was small, but the effects weren't terrible. The plot was actually somewhat original. It was campy. It was clearly supposed to be campy, though, so yeah, good stuff. Some of the characters were actually quite good, and the acting was good enough for this kind of movie. I may even watch it again.
Hard Kill (2020)
Seriously Bad Acting
Netflix got me with this one. It is "free," but I didn't finish it. Bruce Willis was the only reason I started watching, but it's just too painful. Had to stop.
Residue (2017)
Unexpected
I didn't expect much, but if was surprisingly gripping.
Video Game High School (2012)
Surprisingly Good
I started watching as a bit of a guilty pleasure. I like dorky gamer shows. And this one doesn't fail to delivery on the lighthearted silliness.
But what I didn't expect was actual high quality acting. I didn't expect well done drama. Yet this show has those, in addition to its baseline goofiness. It started out pretty awkward, but the other layers developed more in seasons two and especially three.
They manage to strike a balance between the fun and keeping it actually interesting. The characters are pretty much all likable, even the "villains" in their own ways. Perhaps my favorite part is the optimism. Even while enduring ups and downs, the show doesn't lose that. And the main characters survive it with integrity and authenticity, even if somewhat veiled behind the self-conscious dorkiness.
I don't know if they could have kept it going longer, but it was enjoyable while it lasted. Kudos to all involved.
