Spider-Man: Far from Home (2019)
Good not great
Lacks the novel charm of the preceding film, but still a fun watch. Another well-crafted entry in the MCU.
Marriage Story (2019)
Just not relatable
Overall, the characters just don't feel realistic and their situation seems to obscure/overdramatized to sympathize with. The leads have their moments, as does the strong supporting cast, but it feels too hard to get attached to the conflict when the story exists in some distorted reality. A charming movie, but not for everyone.
John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch (2019)
Too quirky for its own good
Fun and witty, the special has great music and performances from the kids, along with amusing cameos. But overall it feels made for adults and about half the sketches are so obscure you wonder who they are supposed to appeal to.
The Dirt (2019)
Everything you would want and expect
The Dirt wasn't made for everybody, but if you embrace the "sex, drugs and rock n roll" on steroids angle, it's as fun as anything I've seen in recent years. Of note is how the Netflix platform likely allowed for more creative liberties and boundary-pushing, which is exactly what the film needed to do it right. Disregarding the factual inaccuracies and twisted timeline, the heavier moments land at times while MGK and Weber's performances are fun and visceral, respectively. There are a lot of detractors that can be found in The Dirt, but it's ultimately a sensationalized and adrenalized perspective of 80's american popculture.
A Star Is Born (2018)
Enjoyable but didn't land here
Gaga wasn't convincing. BC was sympathetic but so detached. Great music and concert scenes. Just seemed a little slow and too underdeveloped to really care.
The Favourite (2018)
Clever script and so well executed
Many powerful scenes and explosive scenes. Interesting panorama lenses experimenting. Great production design. Three lead performances, plus NH, made the movie.
I'm Still Here (2010)
Empty but entertaining
Though lacking direction at times, ISM contains somewhat of a soul through Phoenix and his heartfelt, self centered rants. Better yet, it offers a brief glimpse into the chaotic life of a character of his stature and that in its self is entertaining.
Green Book (2018)
Innocent and warming
Regardless of its veracity, Green Book offered a tame but warming story of race relations in the 60s. Viggos character felt a bit like an overly wholesome stereotype, but nevertheless like able, while Ali's role seemed very dependent and vulnerable. Nothing is spectacular about the film but still a well done, feel good fick.
Bottle Rocket (1996)
Ebery said it best
"It needs to meander, to take time to listen to its dialogue, to slowly unveil character quirks, particularly Dignan's. It's the kind of film, in fact, that a festival like Sundance is ideal for."
A uniquely simple yet hilarious sensibility.
Blockers (2018)
Fresh
Approaches it's subject with a fresh, not off putting perspective. Cast is overall solid. Doesn't try to do too much. Certainly one of the more balanced entries in the genre in a long time.
Mission: Impossible - Fallout (2018)
Great action, not much more
Stunts are clearly at the highest level yet, but plot and performances are disappointingly lacking
Mile 22 (2018)
Underwhelming
Whalberg & Berg don't live up to their potential. Wholly forgettable with the exception of a couple fight scenes.
Logan Lucky (2017)
Pretty good
Fun and clever but nothing to write home about. Underutilized cast
Ex Machina (2014)
As fine an AI tale as anything before it
Truly eerie, punctuating tone, deep reflexive and extremely, unnervingly thought provoking.
Unfriended: Dark Web (2018)
Clever but not really
Smart at times, stupid at others. Interesting to see where the screen capture genre will go...
Sorry to Bother You (2018)
Oddly enjoyable
Despite being incredibly slow at times, and incomprehensibly ridiculous elsewhere, there is a certain light-hearted charm to the film. Granted, the broad messages are undoubtedly forced, but some exceptional, among other lame, performances steal the show.
Game Night (2018)
Decently Clever Enough
Not the most original or memorable, but still fairly solid
In Bruges (2008)
Existential and Irreverent
Not necessarily your favorite, but too smart and original to forget. Really like anything else, plus great performances.
Lady Bird (2017)
Great performances and a strong story
More closer to life than anything in recent memory. Complemented by great performances. Not groundbreaking but truly heartfelt, from all levels. So subtle yet ultimately so affecting.
Big Little Lies (2017)
Wow
Some really moving stuff. Let's hope next season stays true because first season was exceptional.
Incredibles 2 (2018)
Lots of fun, not a lot more
Great animation/actions sequences. Lots of fun. Tries to do too much more than original, loses sense of roots. Not particularly lasting.
A Serious Man (2009)
Not their best work
Moves too slow. Sometimes too forced. Ultimately too ambiguous
The Death of Stalin (2017)
Very original
Doesn't always work but a very clever and interesting way to approach subject
The Square (2017)
Odd
More of a collection of social scenario skits, reminiscent of Portlandia, than a coherent story.
Deadpool 2 (2018)
Hyper but enjoyable
Nonstop jokes and overly graphic violence, but so much of it works. Timing is off from sheer volume of comedy, but still clever and action is impressive.
