Bewitched: The Magic Cabin (1965)
darrin hates magic but in a magical setting
Love the change in background and setting for the episode. They're away from the office. Yes darrin still hates magic and yet gives in when it serves to help him out (yawn). I love the ambiance, the storm, the change in scenerary, the transformation.
It gives a peak into how people handled being stranded in a tole so different, e.g., having to call for road information - knowing to call for road information.
Beautiful scenery and forest and background. Nice fireplace. Cabin getaway decor. It's - a comforting episode where sam and Darren get to get away. Kinda.
The episode is broken up nicely when it cuts back to the story line of his boss. Unexpected guests adds much needed suspense in an otherwise uneventful episode.
The juxtaposition of horrid travel vs perfect travel is met perfectly.
Bewitched: My Boss, the Teddy Bear (1965)
unimportant low brow classic misunderstanding episode
Granted this show may have been one the first to capture and bring to light the classic "misunderstanding" situation we see in every sitcom ever, it's so predictable. Had i watched it when it originally aired it may have been amusing but there is nothing more boring than watching an episode of a sitcom where the characters all misunderstand the situation/each other/an experience. It all ends up being resolved. They all end up forgiving each other. They all look like and feel like asses. Binging this series and this tbe first episode i didn't complete watching.
Perhaos there is character development but it seemed to play off the already done-to-death traits of esch character. The boss is kinda sleezy. Darrin doesn't trust endora. Endora disproves of and messed with darrin. Samantha keeps the peace and solves the problems but can't be everywhere at once.
Hope this doesn't end up being a fall back for the writers. There are eight seasons and the misunderstanding situations are already relied on enough.
Platonic (2023)
Slept on Gem
An incredible feel-good drama compiled with comedic undertones and dramatic intrigue. Think of Platonic as a coming-of-age/feel-good show and blossoms into a pleasantly surprising mix of honesty, dialog, cultural references, and affirmation of the millennial and Gen Z struggle to stay young.
Initial turnoffs:
-Had I'd been privy to the notion that this was (barely) marketed as a comedy series that series starred Seth Rogan, I may have thrown in the towel episode one. Allowing myself to not invest in the first episode gave way to an appreciation of the development (plot and character) of the show while also letting me enjoy the comedic highlights of the dialog without demanding a laugh every scene, as I have in the past with Seth's work.
-Seth Rogan's yelling through out the first two epiy bothered me but he earns total absolution by illuminating the hilarious absurdity we've come to love and by his ability portray real crisis as if he were experiencing it himself.
-Rose Bryne has always had an uncanny ability to cameo herself onto my all time favorite comedies. Now I know why, she's proven herself. I was a bit perturbed by her accent and couldn't quite grasp her role initially. After some research, I found that her accent serves to thoroughly validate the show's premise. It's real - her gaps and fluctuation emulate what this series brings forth, in way that no other other series of it's time has been able to capture.
The Simple Life (2003)
Before its time. avg viewer rating = a miss
Edit/ pretty wild was better
There really isn't a show better than this. Just like arrested development and always sunny, the show was before it's time. It's cinematic genius couples with amazing storytelling through pure character portraits. Proximate to its premiere date, the rating average really make sense. If America wouod have been proposed this masterpiece prior to dubbed reality tv i.e., flavor of love, bachelor, laguna beach, richie would have Have the upper hand and received the credit she deserved which would have played a big part in longevity with regard to the narrative of season one which clearly was the best season. Better than breaking bad? Yes as it's been proven many times before and will continue to hold up to scrutiny in the future - simple life is the best show of all time. Slept on. Yes.
Unsolved Mysteries: 13 Minutes (2020)
slow
A stark contrast from episode one.
maybe it picks up but i'm half way through and all it's been is reel after reel of how the disappearance affects the family (a before & after) - which is sad but not mysterious or interesting in anyway.
Last Ounce of Courage (2012)
great movie for privileged martyrs
This is what happens when a film's key theme is to illustrate the hardship middle class majority families endure due to the existence of non profit civil liberty advocacy groups. /s
it's unbearable if you go in thinking it's a corny christmas movie to enjoy with the family. however, if you watch this w/ a group of semi-informed reasonable adult humans, it can be pretty entertaining, kind of like how The Room is now an enjoyable experience for most viewers.
Ernie & Joe (2019)
A Chronicle of Groundbreaking & Necessary Measures
Interesting to a watch a film that documents one of the first units in law enforcement to recognize and treat mental illness. If others follow suite, we may just have a viable means to countering senseless gun violence. Quite the leap but it starts here. I hope this gathers the attention and demand it's worthy of.
Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj (2018)
BAD: not funny GOOD: riviting
This show gets on my nerves bc it feels condescending at times. but then i remember it's an information news type show. normally that wouldn't negate the aforementioned but thee content on this show is so informative and non repetitive. most important the content is relevant a.f. and interesting bc it's topical but also well researched.
We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011)
I'd rather watch lead paint dry
I love psychological movies. Even if they're bad they still keep me entertained, constantly thinking and engaged. this is the ONLY psychological movie that took me three tries and five years to finally finish (ick not worth it). & it wasn't that i wanted to keep putting myself through that boring hell over and over, but i thought if i could just make it past the first 30m... maybe it woukd start to develope and i could find reason & purpose. nope.
next try, i made it just over the half way marker and found myself starin at the wall thinking about how certain cracks had formed on my wall. just couldn't keep going. gave up again.
third time, i again read another raving review from a source i trust, and i sat through it. i swear i can find the good in anything i have had interest in watching but wth is this? how are the rating so high? Was there like a book or something you were supposed to read before hand? Maybe that would make sense. I would sit through three hours of boring if I had read this feeling book and had something to give a boring movie meaning. i am mad i even am putting more effort in to this nightmare wanting to scour the ten star reviews to find an answer that makes sense. I don't have the stamina to do it today. I guess I'll try back in a couple years. Gross
Schitt$ Creek (2015)
Shows That Make Me LOL:
Always sunny, nathan for you, flight of the conchords, the office, parks & rec, modern family, arrested development, tpb, reno 911, chappelle show, mr show, summer heights high, curb your enthusiasm, wkuk & def a few more that i'll only recall once i press submit.
if you feel the same, you'll probably be pleased w/ schitt's creek, despite its insufferable trailers & promos.
