Downward (2010)
Reminiscent
I love the premise of this film. The characters are developed very interestingly and quickly, at that. The cinematography was good, and inventive shots and angles keep the viewer's eye. This is very reminiscent of an Aronofsky flick. It is a truly scary realistic descent into the life a user, displaying the, dare I say, downward spiral. Unforgettable lines, such as, "You are awake. Awake as you've ever been" haunt your memory. Downward makes your hair stand on end, with a finale that leaves goosebumps under your skin. Much is achieved with this feature in a short time. I would love to see what Reino could do with a full length feature film. Overall, a very cool short film. I want to see more from Jon Reino.
Conference Room C (2007)
Uncomfortable...
No, the film itself is not uncomfortable, it's the awkward and intriguing situations within the movie that make you cringe. "You can't get the pee out of the pool" is the perfect way to describe this feature. Everyone's stuck in the pool, and obviously someone sprung a leak, now to find out whodunit. However this is not a whodunit, but rather a who will it, as co-workers try to work out who will take the fall for a company accident, and what will become of them after. The relentless verbal attacks between co-workers in a confined conference room, or ex-loading dock, make for a very uncomfortable, you-can't-take-it-back, 12 Angry Men-esque film. Well done, truly unsettling, smart writing and great shots, especially for such a confined space.
