Pluto (2023)
A Mature, Brilliant, Unique Piece of Anime - Didn't Know Netflix had it in Them
As soon as Netflix releases a new celebrated anime I'm a sceptic. The reviews look bought, the reviewers dumb. But still, I had my eyes on Pluto and it didn't disappoint.
Other reviews will tell you what the story is about. For me the anime is fascinating due to its in-depth analysis of AI and the meaning of being alive, to feel and being a person.
I loved the characters, the twists and turns of the plot, the dialogue, the score, the style. It's excellent, like a mix between Monster and Neon Genesis Evangelion.
This is what anime can give you that other video formats lack. The ability to explore ideas within a story, in the same way literature can.
A must-watch.
Mob Psycho 100 (2016)
From ok to great to 100 %
I haven't read the mange, and for the me the show was kind of "ok" in the beginning. I thought it to be one of those shows today that are praised online, but lacks what make anime great in my mind: dialogue, emotions, depth, philosophy, storytelling, uniqueness.
The mix between movie and literature, and the ability to tell stories you've never seen before.
As this series and the characters progresses, it becomes just that. A kind story with an important message. With a fantastic soundtrack and masterpiece animation.
Overall, Mob Psycho 100 ended up being a fun and fantastic show that exceeded my initial expectations.
The Batman (2022)
Good movie
It's a good thriller with a nicely thought out plot. Bringing back Batman to the real Gotham.
The people rating it below 7 either can't see Pattison beyond his vampire days or have their minds destroyed by Marvel's constant entertainment - so a real movie becomes boring and hard to understand.
Sweet Tooth (2021)
In the end I wanted the protagonist to get captured
I hate these kind of series. The entire story is driven by idiotic decisions from the protagonist who never learns. It's annoying, and only adults believe that kids are dumb. Also, everything doesn't have to be explained in detail.
The audience isn't dumb.
Unfortunately the first three episodes were good and Netflix-troll-account-reviews made me watch the rest.
Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu: Love Me Down to My Blood and Guts (2021)
Masterpiece
One of the best episodes I've seen. Rewatched the fight between Garfiel and Elsa like three times haha. Perfect sounds, love the voice acting and masterfully written summarizing the plot lines of the season. What a finale.
This is becoming one of my all time favorite animes.
Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu: OVA: Memory Snow (2018)
A good filler episode
Nothing more, nothing less. It's a really good filler for those who appreciate world building and mixing the story with some slice of life.
The Last Kingdom (2015)
Season 1 was not good
I started watching this after Vikings, which have been perfect because you can compare good screenplay with this one. I believe the series lack dialogue and thought and therefore its hollow.
High Maintenance: Grandpa (2016)
Fantastic
Yeah, a fantastic episode and capture of a dogs point of view.
The Witcher (2019)
Like watching some broadcast filler from the 90s
I'm really sorry to say this cause Im fan of the world and the idea of making it a tv-series. But the series is like watching Legend of the seeker or Xena the Warrior Princess. But, if you dislike depth, thought and meaning this might be something you like.
Haikyû!! (2014)
Anime should be fun
"Even if we're not confident that we'll win, even if others tell us we don't stand a chance, we must never tell ourselves that." -Daichi Sawamura
In today's anime age; a world filled with over-analyzations and deconstructions, it's always nice to see a series like Haikyuu come along as if to passively antagonize critics with its immense amount of hype. I've been quite guilty of it in the past, often thinking there was no other reason to watch a series than to critique how much it made you 'think'. But to all the fault-finding reviewers and critics out there (myself included), I have one thing to say... just save your words for once. People aren't watching this anime to tirelessly dissect its story or characters on a philosophical level. Haikyuu is about having fun, comradery and the love of volleyball. The ultimate underdog story. That's pretty much it.
If you told me a couple of years ago that an anime franchise involving high school sports would become such a stand out in the medium, I probably would've laughed in your face. But I've come to realize that the quality of an anime goes beyond how it makes you think. How it makes you feel is just as important... because at the end of the day, most of us watch anime as a means to escape the repetition of everyday life and just enjoy ourselves. It transports us somewhere exciting, somewhere we normally don't experience ourselves. Anime should be fun, and Haikyuu is just that.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)
Visually stunning
This movie is like the most beautiful canvas with a perfect pace, soundtrack and setting. Each character sets their own mark as a personality and animation, and I have not been this stunned by an animated movie (outside of Japan) since Fantastic mr. Fox. My only complaint is the lack of depth but all movies do not need to have an amazing plot twist or intellectual revelation.
It is what it is, and I really hope this is the start of something new.
The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
An excellent drama told trough a horror lens
This is not a horror series, but a family drama told through a horrific lens. A story when the horror is not the meal but the ingredients.
The haunting of Hill House achieves storytelling in excellence but its excels in much more. Leaving the great soundtrack, acting and scenery aside - the biggest achievement is the editing and story that unfolds.
The drama circles around a family who all share a traumatic past from living in a haunted house in their early years. It scared them personally and as a family, and the audience follow both their early days and how they are cooping with the memories afterwards.
With that said - the drama is dark and scary. Its not gore, blood or dumb zombies hungry for brains. Instead the horror has a story in its own right, and also from a perspective of the human psych and the meaning of it all.
I loved it and saw the whole series in one day. It only happened three times this 2018 with Dark, Cobra Kai and Manhunter - the Unabomber. Three series that stood out due to fantastic manuscripts and editing. The only reason why this is not getting a higher rating is because it lacked in ending (very much my own nihilistic opinion) and special effects.
I'm not a huge fan of the horror genre as its often fails to tell a interesting story. Instead the focus lays with scaring its audience. I hope this sets a new way of how horror is used. A must watch.
Jägarna (1996)
A Swedish masterpiece
This is a character driven drama focusing on two brothers in the north of Sweden. It take place in a unknown small town beside undisturbed northern nature at its best. The green mountain landscape acts as a theater taking the drama forward. The main actors, especially a singing Lennart Jähkel, are excellent in roles as brothers in a greek tragedy.
It's a good paced movie taking itself seriously. A drama so dark in its portrayal of its characters people are calling it a thriller. It's also grey in its morals for those seeing the flaws of our protagonist. The Stockholm police who with no understanding of the local culture triggering the events unfolding.
