Great Acting, Good Storyline, Great Message!
5 June 2005
Warning: Spoilers
*Warning: Possible Spoilers!* In an industry where teenage girls are portrayed far too stereotypically, it's nice to see a movie that portrays ACCURATE representations of 4 adolescent girls- 4 girls with differing sizes, personalities and priorities, but all with the commonality of their deep friendship for one another. I was so happy to watch a movie that didn't show teenage girls partying and drinking, among other things, but being focused, and questioning their decisions and future. Alleuia to the fact that Carmen was a bit on the heavy side, that Lena was beautiful without loads of makeup, and that Bridget's ploy to seduce Eric wasn't completely his fault. I also enjoyed that the film addressed (fairly accurately, might I add) issues that regular teenage girls face everyday- issues like suicide of a parent, feelings of loss from divorced parents, the whirlwind of emotions after losing your virginity, the loss of a friend, and the trials and tribulations of maturing into a woman.

America Ferrera (Carmen), Alexis Bledel (Lena), Amber Tamblyn (Tibby), and Blake Lively (Bridget) gave amazing performances as each of their respective characters, and the acting didn't seem forced or rehearsed, but fairly simultaneous. In my opinion, America and Amber stole the show, but Alexis and Blake were extremely good as well.

The reason why this movie works is because the themes are universal for it's target age group, and because it makes you hope that maybe, just maybe, it's possible in some shape or form for every teenage girl to have the kind of bond which the pants' four "sisters" share.

9/10, because some things were a tiny bit cliché, although it still worked for the movie.

Wimbledon (2004)
7/10
Overall, a cute movie
19 September 2004
Wimbledon is a cute story where cute people fall in love, make great love, than have an inevitable and predictable fight in the middle of it all.

Even though this movie follows the formula's of most romantic comedies, it is saved by above-average chemistry with its leads, (Kirsten Dunst and Paul Bettany) and the tennis aspect it is focused around. The romance between Dunst and Bettany works because they share the commonality of their sport, which helps to ignite their relationship.

If you're not a lover of cute sappy moments like barefooted walks in the park or 10 mile jogs resulting in a big cuddle-fest, than at least see this movie for its realistic tennis scenes. These scenes (which were really shot at Wimbledon) are extremely well done, especially those of Bettany's matches, where you can hear his comical inner thoughts before he serves the ball. The scenes reflect the pressure and intimidation that every tennis player must feel once he steps out onto the court.

While Wimbledon is certainly not the best romantic comedy, I left the theater smiling rather than gagging. And for me, that's a good thing.

The Notebook (2004)
10/10
Sincere, passionate and all together lovely!
28 June 2004
What a pleasure to see a such a touching and sincere story in the midst of a summer full of special FX and comic strip characters!

The Notebook follows the story of 2 lovers from beginning to end. It was lovely to see two romantic leads (Rachel McAdams as Allie Hamilton, and Ryan Gosling as Noah Calhoun) portray the journey of innocent young love to passionate love reuniting. Seldom in Hollywood do we see 2 romantic leads that have so much chemistry between them! The slightest look from Noah or Allie could put a huge smile on my face.

Yes, the movie is cliché, but what romantic movie isn't? This is by far one of the best, if not the best, romance movie that i've seen. The acting is superb (not only by Gosling and McAdams, but in supporting roles like James Garner, Gena Rowlands and Joan Allen) the scenery is beautiful, and (as I mentioned before) the chemistry between Rachel and Ryan is AMAZING. I didn't feel like I was watching two actors portraying Noah and Allie, I felt like I was watching THE Noah and Allie. Expect very marvelous things from Rachel McAdams in the near future!

Overall, a very moving and beautiful love story that has not come to the silver screen in a VERY long time. I'll definitely be seeing it again at the theatre, and I'll be buying the DVD the day it comes out!
