Great documentary that shows impact of climate change
14 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I watched this movie courtesy of The New Yorker's website as I began my prepping for Oscars 2023 telecast. The basic description alluded to the topic I was to watch, but the overall film is very impactful. Having seen the movie "Arctic Tale" many times, narrated by Queen Latifah, I was aware of walrus migration and their need for sea ice. This documentary, which is almost in a movie format, shows the impact of less/no sea ice for the walrus' to rest on as they approach land where they may feed, mate, and rest. The sheer enormity of the walrus gathering is something I've never seen even in a National Geographic film. I applaud the filmmakers for documenting this phenomena and the impact climate change is effecting. Also, side note, for a documentary short subject feature, I found that the sound/audio quality was very well done by the sound engineers.

Disappointed and underwhelmed. What were they thinking??
14 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I watch this movie on Thursday the 13th via Peacock. I was very excited for this movie being a long time fan since 1981 when I saw the original as I was seven years old. The 2018 movie and follow up Halloween Kills really set up the scene for what I'd hoped to be a very good conclusion. The first hour and 20 minutes was so depressing because it wasn't even Michael Myers doing the killing, and it really felt like I was watching a different movie than a Halloween movie. I felt like there were elements of trying to be a rom-com which is not a horror movie trope. The movie was entirely too long, and the alternative killer aspect felt desperate. A franchise such as this and supposedly Laurie's last hoorah deserved better. Overall I believe this is a very forgettable entry.

True to source material; Very good movie
13 August 2019
I read this book several years ago, and I remember crying like a baby in the Charlotte airport on a layover as I read the last two chapters. Tears of sorrow combined with tears of joy streamed down my face, and this little old lady came over to me and said, "Honey, are you ok?" I smiled and just said, "This book is so good!"

Flash forward to the movie, and I literally almost started crying at the very first scene. I hold the book in high regard, and the opening shot of Enzo just brought back so many good memories of the book. As I watched the movie, I felt the producers/director stayed very true to the message of the source material. Do I know scene-by-scene if they stayed true? No, I do not. However, the overall beginning to end conveys the major events that happen, and without a doubt, it was such an incredible struggle not to burst into tears during the final moments of the movie. I was not alone in this as I heard many sniffles in the audience. It was almost sold out on a Tuesday matinee!

The overall message is perseverance, love, loyalty, and being true to yourself. The story of Enzo is a heartwarming story, and I can't recommend this book and movie enough.

What movie did the critics watch? The one I watched was very good!
7 June 2019
DISCLAIMER: I have never read one single X-Men comic, so I am not about to do a comparison between comic and movie. Pointless.

I really enjoyed this film. It is two solid hours of power display throughout the entire film, and some of the scenes from the trailers did not make it into the movie which means some of the cheesiest looking trailer moments were either redone or removed. These edits helped the finished product.

This is a better Dark Phoenix telling than "X-Men: The Last Stand." Only complaint is that perhaps so much happens in the film from an action standpoint that at times it does feel rushed, but it thoroughly flew.

If you're a film of the X-Men movies, you will enjoy this movie.

Completely underwhelming and disappointing
18 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I'm not sure where to begin. I'll talk about the acting, plot, pacing, and overall feel.

The acting is plan horrible. Other than Fassbender, I would describe the acting as "emotionally hollow." It seemed like everyone was just running the lines as opposed to emoting them. I had no connection to any of the characters, and usually, I do. Think about how you are engaged with Ripley, and she commands your attention. You don't have any of that with this film.

The plot suffers from a serious identity crisis. Is this Alien? Is this Aliens? Is this Predator? Is this Aliens vs. Predator? You can see so many references (rehashings?) of other films that it just seems like one endless set of slightly connected scenes. And, seriously, I think a 3rd-grader could predict everything that was about to happen. Absolutely no originality!

The pacing of the film is somewhat steady, but way too long. This film takes itself way too seriously and tries to be "artsy,' but it falls flat. For such a build-up of "Run," on the posters and the trailer, it tries too hard to be dramatic. Did Fassbender's agent require these scenes to get him back in the project? I don't know, but about 40 minutes before the end of the movie I started wanting the film to just end because I knew they would neatly sew things up just to end it, and they did.

The overall feel of the film is "Let's put out a crap film with a recognizable brand to see how much money we can make." Fans of the Alien franchise will view this once. It is the ROGUE:One of the Alien franchise---view once, and never watch again.

This is a direct sequel to "Prometheus," and supposedly the second film in a prequel trilogy where the third film will completely bridge the gap to the first "Alien." I will see the third, if made, but if it is more of the same, then it is time for Ridley to let this baby go off into deep space and not come back. I hate to say it, but I have serious concerns now for the upcoming "Blade Runner," sequel!

Completely boring, slow, and not sure of itself
4 July 2016
The film started out feeling like a trip to Skull Island, then the film drug on and on, and then the predictable ending had morphed into Planet of the Apes with a dash of Indiana Jones. Alexander Skargard gives Keanu Reeves a run for his money in terms of "cardboard acting." This is 110 minutes I'll never get back. The positive/glowing reviews have to be fake/paid for. Notice the disparity between the critical reviews and the user reviews. Something is awry! Also, as for the other actors, Christoph Waltz is slightly more human while Margo Robbie does the best overall. Samuel L Jackson's portrayal is apparently supposed to be the comic relief portion, but I kept wondering why his character is so "out there." I will not be watching again.

Slow West (2015)
6/10
Slow story, very pretty to watch, great audio, and that's all
26 April 2015
Warning: Spoilers
The only reason I watched this movie, a western, was because it had Michael Fassbender in it, who I have a true admiration/lust for, and it was only 90 minutes long. I figured I could handle that length of time.

I am not going to describe the plot because the tagline/description in IMDb sums it up nicely. I read reviews stating that the film had bursts of humor in it. I counted 2 bursts of humor that made me laugh out loud. The story itself was stretched to fill the 90 minutes. If you are a fan of slow westerns, then you may really like it. There really isn't much here other than a beautiful video of New Zealand showing a few people riding horseback, having minimal dialogue, a few odd adventures, and a very violent ending. I gave it a 6 out of 10. I almost quit watching about 40 minutes in, but I decided to stick out the remaining 50 minutes.

Bears (I) (2014)
8/10
Cute and enjoyable film.
19 April 2014
I watched Disney's "Bears," during the opening weekend. I support the Earth Day films they make each year. Of the ones I have seen in the past ("Oceans," "African Cats," and "Chimpanzee,"), this one is not the best one they have done, but it is still enjoyable. The film is a tad slow, and at 77 minutes, you get the sense the filmmakers had to stretch the movie out to even reach 77 minutes. The end credits showed a lot of the filming, and I got the sense it could have been longer.

The good things about the film is watching the bear cubs play and frolic and their journey with their mother. The film lacks a lot of breathtaking panoramas and scenes considering it is a nature film, but the scenes showing all of the Alaskan mountains are gorgeous. I like John C. Reilly, but to be honest, his narration did not exactly add to the presentation.

Philomena (2013)
8/10
Good portrayal of a true-life story.
1 March 2014
I just finished seeing "Philomena." The story was very intriguing, especially considering it is based on true events. I have not read the book so I cannot compare accuracy of adaptation or creative license.

The actors give very good performances. It was nice to see Anna Maxwell Martin in a featured supporting role because I really enjoyed her work in "Bleak House." Judi Dench received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress for this role. While her acting is always good, unfortunately she plays one of three characters in just about every film. This portrayal is easily a combination of her roles in "Shipping News," and "Notes On A Scandal."

Without giving anything away, the story deals with Catholicism, unmarried girls getting pregnant, and too much authority by those in religious positions. At 98 minutes, the film moves pretty swiftly and doesn't lull at any time. Moments of humor are interjected throughout which provides a break from the serious nature of the film. Recommended viewing!

Liz & Dick (2012 TV Movie)
6/10
Bad script, poor editing, misguided performances
25 November 2012
I just finished watching the movie. Lindsey looked like Liz, but her voice was the most noticeable distraction. Elizabeth Taylor had vulnerability in her voice, but was precise. Lindsay did not seem very vulnerable in her voice--she seemed more, "Whatever, lady." The acting was misguided because the director really should have worked harder to bring more of Liz out of Linds.

What I could not get over was how bad the script was and even worse was the editing. So much more could have been detailed in the storyline, but the abrupt edits made it difficult to sustain momentum.

Overall, the movie was hyped to be a blockbuster event, but deep down, it's still a made-for-TV movie by Lifetime: The television for women and the gay men they want to convert. So, don't expect Oscar nominations.

I think the film and performances could have been a lot better, but overall, it was enjoyable to watch but probably not noteworthy.

Excellent new entry to the series!
19 January 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I just returned from a midnight showing of the "Underworld: Awakening." I was very pleased with the film. NO SPOILERS, SO HERE GOES!

1) The film is high-energy and fast-paced just like the predecessors. 2) This film is a direct sequel to "Underworld: Evolution," and does not reference "Rise of the Lycans," at all. 3) If someone goes with you to the film who hasn't seen the original films, there is a brief introduction at the beginning that explains the majority of the first two films to bring people up to speed. 4) Action sequences are very good, shot at very good angles/perspectives, and multiple sequences are expertly edited to show all of the action.

I did not give a "10" rating because: 1) The CGI in the film is decent, and the Lycans do not look quite like the Lycans from the first three films. So, a little "different." 2) I won't give it away, but there is a scene near the end that could have indicated a bigger climactic scene than what the actual finale was. So, I was a little disappointed that it didn't happen, but, the finale itself was still pretty good. 3) There were a few scenes of photographs showing Celine in action, and to be honest, the photographs looked very cheaply made. Better detail could have easily been made.

I really consider this to be an excellent entry in the series, and perhaps the beginning of a new trilogy (if you consider the first three a trilogy). At 1 hr 28 mins, the movie flies by.

Pan Am: Pilot (2011)

Not what I was expecting......
25 September 2011
I was expecting to see some silly show about flight attendants and the various things they encounter while serving passengers. I was very glad to see that many plot lines were exposed in the Pilot, and it appears that many secrets are left to be discovered. I liked the look and the feel of the show as the producers try to capture the essence of a time gone by. I think the show has promise and potential. It will be interesting to see how each storyline is developed. I was surprised to see Christina Ricci is in this, and in fact, had I not seen a picture of her and advertisement for it on Facebook I may not have watched it. But, I am glad that I did, and I will be watching weekly unless the show starts disappointing.

Scream 4 (2011)

Excellent 4th installment!
14 April 2011
I just got back home from a midnight screening. I was very excited to see this film, and I am now at home eagerly waiting to go and see it again as well as really hoping this is the beginning of a new trilogy.

First, nothing is overdone in the film. Second, nothing is contrived. Third, the script and plot is very inventive, has humility, yet plenty of scares. During the film, several scenes are reminiscent of scenes from the original trilogy.

The film clocks in at almost 2 hours, which is long for a horror film. But, the reason it is this long is because there is a lot of plot development and setting the stage for the final act. You will enjoy this film!

Earth (2007)
9/10
Very breathtaking scenery and quite enjoyable
26 April 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I would have given this movie a 10, but there were two issues I had a problem with. First (THIS IS THE SPOILER), there is a scene in there that is directly taken from a show I saw on either Discovery or National Geographic. I was expecting totally new and original footage, so I'm now wondering how much of this film is new? Second, (non-spoiler), I was watching the movie on a DLP screen. A few of the scenes, especially when you see the zebra running on the sand, are grainy. I would not have expected something filmed probably in hi-def on a DLP screen to be so grainy--especially if it is completely new footage. I love my techie stuff, and pristine images is something I really enjoy.

Other than the two things above, this film is VERY enjoyable and amusing in some sections. There was a trailer on this movie for "The Oceans," which is coming on Earth Day in 2010. I am already looking forward to that film.

If you plan on taking your family to see this movie, make it a matinée. It's a good thing to watch with your family---they do show a few "kills," but there is NO blood nor carnage shown. Also, you're basically paying to watch an expanded and should-be-new version of a TV original, so no need to pay high dollar when you can pay matinée. By going to the movies to see this, you're saying you want to see more films made like this, and hopefully, you care about preserving the planet and animals so that more films like this will happen!

Decent homage, but action moves too fast
12 February 2009
Warning: Spoilers
To have remade this film, you would have thought the producers would have developed it a bit better. I do agree that the first 10-15 minutes were good and that it lulls for a bit. However, what I hate most is when during the chase/action scenes the camera moves all over the place. Why do they do that? NONE of the original Friday films did that, so why start now!? I think that the film could have been more, it had a lot to live up to, and some of the new plot elements (the hidden catacombs underneath the camp?) were a bit too much. I think this is the weakest of the remakes so far that Michael Bay has done. I did like that it started out showing the mother getting killed, which adds to it. But, something I don't like with these remakes is how they make them too "slick." In the original Fridays and Halloweens, the characters were everyday citizens who happen upon bad fortune. These cover models running the woods don't do it for me.

Very good film---fun for the whole family
5 July 2008
Hey there! I was able to go to Knoxville, TN, to catch the world premiere of this movie where I actually met Brendan Fraser, Josh Hutcherson, and the director. They were all three very nice! The movie is very fun with not having to think at all. I've never read the book, so I have no idea how "true" to the book it is. The movie clocks in at 92 minutes, which is a great length. I saw it in the REAL 3D, and I am so glad I did. The new technology makes the 3D just incredible. Some of the special effects were very much animated and you could tell, but the movie itself is visually stunning, very entertaining, has no bad language, nudity, nor sex scenes. My vote is that for a good 1.5 hours of entertainment with your family, this is the movie for you! Oh yeah, it opens on July 11th, 2008--my 34th birthday!

High Tension (2003)
8/10
Interesting psychological chiller with strange twist at end.
12 June 2005
So, I went and saw this movie today. It is a French film, with both dubbing and subtitles. They couldn't make their mind up on which to use. So, to the movie. It provides PLENTY of chills and high tension--as the name implies. The movie is short--85 minutes. There is a LOT you can read into this movie plot-wise. The movie is very straight-to-the-point, but at the same time, it doesn't explain certain things, and there is definitely some history. But, it doesn't leave you saying "WTF," but instead, it leaves you thinking, "Well, maybe this happened," or "Hmm, I wonder." I've read other comments on here about how the twist wasn't really needed, or it could have been left out. It's very subjective---it could just be a metaphor or how the main character actually sees her darker qualities. There aren't any spoilers in this. It's quite a fun way to spend 85 minutes of your time. So, I gave it an 8 out of 10 based on chill-factor, decent plot, and the ability to make you think about events that could have led up to the storyline.

Makes it worthwhile to watch Episodes 1 and 2!!!!
19 May 2005
This movie was well worth the wait! I just returned home from the midnight showing at one of the theaters here in Chattanooga. I must say that I was anxious to see how Anakin became Darth Vader. No spoilers here, but I feel that every question I ever had about the origins of Darth, the emperor, the mother of Luke & Laura, etc, have been answered. The special effects are outright phenomenal, if not dizzying in some scenes. The sound is superb, and the story has more depth than episodes 1 and 2. Lucas really should have gotten a woman or gay man to write the tender moments between Padme and Anakin, but still, if you like the love-story aspect, there's stuff in there for you, also. The first Star Wars movie I saw was "Return of the Jedi," since I was only 3 when Episode IV came out, and 7 when Episode V came out. So, I was too young, and wasn't familiar with it. So, I essentially missed out on the original trilogy and making it part of my childhood. However, watching this trilogy has closed any gaps, and now, these six movies are really something to cherish. I loved "Titanic," but I think this movie is good enough to get enough repeat business, it could become the #1 box-office champ for the U.S. May the force be with Episode III!

Good look at how gullible religious people can be.
27 August 2004
Warning: Spoilers
Growing up in the Bible belt, it's quite easy to see how gullible people can be when it comes to religion. I can only imagine how during the time period that this took place, how religion was the end-all, be-all, and scientific discoveries hadn't disproven most of it, that people would easily believe that someone was powerful. For example (spoiler!!), the scene where the wood falls and the lady is tried for being a witch because another lady saw it fall and then blames the first lady as causing it with her "witch" powers. Have these people never heard of gravity or earth tremors that make things fall naturally? Apparently, they haven't. If you do not find religion to be all that is cracked up to be, you'll find this movie quite enjoyable because seeing how Winona Ryder's character and a few other's employ the "witch" factor to their advantage is quite funny.

Alien 3 (1992)

My vote of 8 is for the Assembly Cut from the Quadrilogy!
27 August 2004
Warning: Spoilers
Alien3, theatrical version, was not a good follow-up to my favorite film of all time, Aliens. However, if you buy the Alien: Quadrilogy, box set, and watch the Assembly Cut which adds almost an hour to the movie as well as changes some of the other aspects, Alien3 becomes an entirely different movie---and a much much better one. You get more history of the prison, more history of the prisoners, and overall more plot development. Also, SPOILER!!!--the alien doesn't come from a dog, it comes from another animal. The only bad thing about Alien3: Assembly is that the Alien is still blue-screened. I don't understand why they couldn't have used stunt actors dressed up in the suits to make it more realistic. If they had done that, I would almost rank this movie as good as ALIENS. But, without a doubt, "ALIENS" is the best sequel ever made!

My favorite Chevy Chase film!
10 August 2004
This is my favorite Chevy Chase film for several reasons. Here they are: 1.) I love the scenery in the movie--Vermont, four distinct seasons, gorgeous Cape Cod house. 2.) I love and can totally relate to the story line. When I first saw this movie, I was in college and playing tennis on the tennis team. We traveled to a city where EVERYTHING went wrong--and, the people were just plain weird. I saw this movie, and I totally empathized with Andrew and Elizabeth Farmer! 3.) The humor in this movie is not over the top as it is with some of Chevy Chase's other films--everything is believable, and it's all very funny. 4.) I want a yellow dog!!! The yellow labrador in this movie will make you want one of your own! My only complaint with this film: The DVD version is not in Widescreen, and there are no special features. But, for $5.88 in the Wal-Mart cheap bin, YOU CANNOT GO WRONG. This is an excellent movie to watch over and over again.

5.1 Sound is great, but the movie isn't.
16 February 2004
I watched this on DVD in my home theater. The 5.1 Dolby Disc was excellent; however, the movie itself wasn't good. The plot and the story was weak, the acting was a little plain, and just too long of a movie in general. If this is option A for movie night, go with Option B.

A good expose of how crooked religion can be.
13 January 2004
This movie is really good on several levels. First of all, Steve Martin does an excellent job as a "flashy preacher man" by night, but conniving money hoarder by day. Debra Winger does a good job, and we're introduced to a young Liam Neeson and Philip Seymour Hoffman. However, what this movie also does is show how "sideshow tent revivals" pray on people by using their beliefs to mask their true intents. I highly recommend this movie to anyone who feels that religion and religious people are not what they seem to be!

Good beginning to a very successful series!!!
6 January 2004
This movie was a good beginning to the series, although I thought Part 2 was a better movie than the first. For the series as a whole, I think Part 6 is the scariest, and Part 4 is probably the best plot (if you can even think of a plot in these films). What these films are is pure entertainment--trying to scare someone without too much blood and gore--in the first 4, at least. Too bad they don't make movies like this anymore--I seriously hope they don't remake it like they did Texas Chainsaw Massacre (although, the remake was better than the original).

Surprisingly good love story, and great special effects!
20 September 2003
Okay, as the hype for this movie built up, I was eagerly awaiting to see it. I mean, $200 million to MAKE a movie!??! But, being a major James Cameron fan, I couldn't wait to see how he sank that ship. So, for the first two hours, I watch this love story develop, anticipating the sinking. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the story was entertaining, and it really did not get in the way. Then, BOOM! The ship hit the iceberg, and the technical side of Cameron came out. I was so impressed with the camera angles, the sound, and the visualization of the sinking. This movie became so popular that it probably created a backlash by people who just can't stand to join the majority (well, news for you, you're still joining a group!), but I still enjoy watching this movie.
