Van der Valk (2020)
Entertaining .. gorgeous scenery
Really goods fun .. I hope more episodes to conges but looks like critics didn't like it
The Tree of Life (2011)
ambitious, knockout film
like others attempting to articulate a response, it's hard to say what it's about - i will just say, however, that it weaves personal and intimate in with global and eternal time scales in a very convincing way - it also could not be done in any other way except in cinema. for me, it feels like poem cinema - a new category?? we all (as human beings) share deep attachments to mother - either negative or positive; similarly to dad - and this applies to both male or female (I'd have liked more on that apart from little boy's berating her, saying that she does not stand up their father_- and, like the boys in the family, we have envies and ambivalent feelings much of the time about any sibs we have.
like Job, too, 'god's' answer to what he thinks of us is in creation itself, the majestic forward drive of it - meanings we try to impose sometimes work - but not always. there is nothing we do right or wrong - event is acausal.
a stunning event of a film, and you will walk away feeling just like that - stunned. would i watch it a second time? well, i guess not right away - it did dawdle ... but i would out of love for it however sometime in future, and i'd also recommend it
El marido perfecto (1992)
eerie and fascinating buddy story
acting is superb, and that brings the subtlety of Dostoevski's study of a friendship to light - each man has his own arrogance, and is willing to let others - in the case of the character player by Firth, who believes the womaniser has wronged him, allows a child to suffer as a pawn between them - we are prepared by his over-reaction to a woman's expression of irritation when he smokes on the train - he throws her dog out the moving train's window. who is the bad guy in this one? it is impossible not to be seduced, as all women are in his sphere, by the Roth character. Firth rarely lands a woman except by bullying, it appears. he constantly places himself in competition with the hands-down winner, Roth's character. what distressed me most is the unlikely voice that emerges from the Roth character's voice box - as a musician i can accept Roth in the part but the utterly unlikely voice dislocates the film. he is a scoundrel who we love. under-rated eerily muted film...
Forbrydelsen (2007)
superb hokum
wow does the writer lay it on! spectacular ending - the contrivance of the plotting keeps putting things off, and also, strangely, renders it all a bit claustrophobic alongside the perpetually dark set with flashlights - really terrific despite some longueurs
the police make those sorts of mistakes that lead us on to the right path - and it is so satisfying when all the world is against her, and Lund pulls through - ending leaves it open for another series
there has been lots of comment about subtitles, and they really, really work because we are hearing dialogue that is rapid-fire and adding to the tension, and reading what look like summaries - they are so closely integrated that it is extremely effective - i think it must feel so plain in its original language - it is excellent that producers agreed to let it go out with subtitles.
Tarragona - Ein Paradies in Flammen (2007)
horrific television fodder - disaster material
the first reviewer raised great questions - about whether such true life disasters should be turned into drama - i suppose that in some ways we want to witness these things so they won't be forgotten - not that it is something to treasure in some ways, but that the deaths and the awful event should be recalled for all time - such an arbitrary accident: we have to remember how to behave, how to think about what matters most to us. drama can achieve this, and i am convinced it's a good idea to have done it. courage under great horror is gratifying to witness and helps us in our own times of tragedy. but i completely appreciate his point of view. film production values and characters are well drawn.
