Doragon heddo (2003)
Pretty good movie ...
I rented this expecting a little out of this movie (the movie's graphics are grade A regardless of the B-movie feel) and got what I wanted and then some. Subtitling was great.
SLIGHT SPOILERAGE BELOW ... nothing that explains the movie though Good premise. Along the lines of 28 days and The Thing with the way the people react to being put in a stressful situation.
If you get the chance, definitely pick it up for rental. As far as buying ... weak buy if you're into apocalypse movies (mainly because they only show what's going on in Japan and you don't know what's going on in the rest of the world ... no 'The Core', 'Day After Tomorrow' 'feel' where stuff is going on around the world). That turns into a moderate buy if you're into Anime and want to show some other anime lovers something different, but they would appreciate (especially because the main girl sounds exactly like one of the whiny characters out of Inuyasha or something). Turns into a high moderate buy if you want something for people to say they've never seen before - and you may not get it back.
Jet Li Is 'The One' (2002)
The concept alone makes this one a watcher
Jet Li versus himself is a potent combination in a movie. Yet, the concept is what makes this movie stand out. Just like Matrix introduced the element of we're all part of the program this introduces the element that we're all part of an infinitely branching universe. It somewhat makes sense that if you have a river that splits up into many different rivers and you go and block all the paths of the other rivers your part of the river becomes even more powerful.
The movie had special effects, yet didn't go overboard. This was probably because Jet Li can do things many other martial artist can't do even with wires. You had to go along with the movie in certain spots in order to believe, but it was entertaining.
The powers Jet Li acquires and how they are presented makes this movie stand out also.
All in all, I loved this movie. If you want to really become a Jet Li fan and love action, I would suggest you see this movie and Lethal Weapon 4. This will give you another icon to throw in the pot with the other icons such as Jackie Chan and the legend Bruce and let a person see why Don Wilson, Steven Segal, Jean Claude, the Texas Ranger and Taebo boy are just run of the mill martial artist.
Rating 7/10
Jûbê ninpûchô (1993)
Near to the greatest anime ever made ...
There are some movies that take you to a different place. There are some movies that make people cry and some that make people think. This is a movie that does none of the above. It just provides entertainment. It wasn't made to be the greatest movie of all time - even though the creators may think it is. Yet, who doesn't think the movie they put out is the greatest masterpiece ever made? The point I'm trying to make is that Ninja Scroll was not made to appeal to everybody. It is just the imagination of some men somewhere and they thought it was good enough to put on the screen and make money.
To all of the people trying to disseminate the movie and peel out meaning, "What are you trying to prove?" There is blood, gore, some scenes not suitable for children and even some small-minded adults, and bad language, in general. To all the people who want to sit down and see a well-executed anime movie with a plot with few holes and scenes that are unbelievable few and far between (even in the fantasy animation realm) while not have to think while watching - this is it. The dubbed version was just as good as the subbed (sub-titled) version. All you have to do is enjoy.
So if you haven't seen the movie and would like not a mind trip like Donnie Darko or 12 Monkeys, or not to have a moment that all is right for the character even though he went though garbage in the beginning like A Beautiful Mind or The Shawshank Redemption, or not to have a good cry like The Green Mile or Braveheart or not even to have to interpret your own meaning of what's really going on like Akira or Princess Mononoke, then just sit back and see how animation and that feeling that makes you wonder 'how did they think to put that in the movie' collides then watch Ninja Scroll. If you go into it with an open mind then you will see why the action fans believe it one of the greatest anime movies ever made.
