The Man Who Fell to Earth (2022)
A superb Science Fiction drama with heart.
I've just finished watching this incredible TV series which is a direct sequel to Nick Roeg's movie from 1976. Chiwetel Ejiofor plays Faraday, an alien brought here by Bill Nighy's Thomas Newton - played in the original by David Bowie - to save both their home planet and Earth. Naomie Harris plays Justin Falls, a discredited scientist who assists Faraday. Unfortunately big corporations and the CIA get involved and put Faraday, the Falls family and the entire planet in danger.
Ten amazing episodes with a very satisfying ending.
My only small gripe (and it is small) is that the whole thing is played as a bit of a Bowie tribute. Every episode title is a Bowie song and each episode has Bowie lyrics hidden in the script. The use of Five Years in the finale though is superbly done. I wonder if Bowie was still alive, whether he would have played Thomas Newton again. Sadly, we can only speculate.
Watch this show if you can.
Crabs! (2021)
Bonkers!
Gremlins meets Critters with a good dose of Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla!
No one thing in this movie makes an ounce of sense - from the crab DJ to how a kid is able to build a giant robot kaiju in his garage overnight!
Just go with the flow and enjoy it for what it is - silly enjoyable nonsense.
Chaos Walking (2021)
Appalling sound mix on Amazon!
I just finished watching this on Amazon.
It was a decent enough movie with an interesting premise. However, I found it impossible to watch without subtitles. The music and sound effects totally drowned out the dialog. As this movie relies on hearing the inner voices of the characters this was a big problem. It was so loud in fact that I had to turn the volume way down to make it bearable. The subtitles saved it. Barely! I have a decent 5.1 sound system and regularly watch movies on Amazon - so I know it wasn't me.
