Utvandrarna (1971)
Real movie lovers MUST see this!
I had this movie on VHS and transferred it to DVD. It is one of the best movies I have ever seen, and its sequel "The New Land" is equally as good. The acting, direction, cinematography... all excellent. It is a very evocative movie and seems to depict quite honestly the hardships and struggles of immigrants in the 1800s. This is one of about a dozen movies I must watch at least once per year. I love it. I would recommend this movie to dang-near anybody!
It's All About Love (2003)
Uhhh... what?
The acting was quite good, overall, and the direction and cinematography were also good. It's not your average Hollywood movie, and for me that's a plus. But... there's something missing. I rented this DVD on the strength of Joaquin Pheonix and Sean Penn being in the movie, and it being described on the DVD case as a "Suspense-Thriller". As an avid Alfred Hitchcock fan I was looking for this type of experience. While I found it quite interesting, in the end I was left wondering "Exactly what was the point? Where was the "maguffin"? To me (and my wife) there seemed to be something of a lack of explication; what about the background impending apocalypse? No idea. While it is worth seeing, I won't be buying my own copy any time soon.
