My Boys (2006)
Viewer watching it in 2012 has nothing to gain...
Why this show got canceled. Some reasonable points:
1. DATED: I mean who were these people? They seemed to be stuck in a time warp of old jokes and situations. The kind where its okay to make lame jokes about female drivers.
2. EVERYBODY LOOKED OLD/ CAST: Maybe if the series was made 5 years ago. I mean we have seen all of the cast members in some role or the other. They are known faces, but were never in direct lime light. This is not to say that each of them wasn't a gifted actor. Indeed they were but somehow never exploited to there full potential.
3. BEEN THERE DONE THAT: the kind of female inner monologue narrative had already been used to its full potential in mega hits like sex and the city. The leading lady, talented as she was could garner no audience support for her age old problems that the viewer has already seen a million times.
4. HUMOR: In the end the whole thing was hammy and trite. You may say that I am being too harsh but I really am not. Imagine this show releasing at the same time as 'How I met your Mother' (and that started in 2005!!!!). The stronger show survived and the weaker one got canceled.
All in all, it is at best some good background television while you stream better stuff from the internet. The background music is sincere and jazzy, just like in Seinfeld or Sex and the city. I will give it a 4 for decent acting, time tested but still clean camera-work and the over all success in making someone stop for a second and pay it attention because all the above stated facts ultimately help it in creating a false sense of expectation. If you expect, you pay attention which is more then anyone can ask for.
Regardless, a viewer watching it in 2012 has nothing to gain from it.
The Ghost Writer (2010)
A easy to watch, mild political thriller
Somehow I feel that the Ghost Writer doesn't deliver as one would expect a Roman Polanski film to. The thrills are lukewarm and it is easy to guess the whole plot half way through the movie. Its not a great mystery. The plot is good in so much that it intends to shed some light into the possibilities of high profile propaganda and set up in political office.
Even with a strong star cast the film is still mildly mediocre in the performance department. There was no room for Ewan Mcgregor's usual whispered dialogs and worried looks. Pierce Brosnan is great as the out of office, but not quite retired British prime minister. Olivia Williams as his dangerously intelligent and mysterious wife deserved more depth of character, had that been the case perhaps the whole plot would not have been as predictable and ultimately disappointing. The ending is once again a cold damper to a already weak film.
That said, everyone else seems to like it and there is no reason why you wouldn't either. Maybe enjoyable as light weight viewing.
For the Bible Tells Me So (2007)
Objective, non-judgmental - Just a way a documentary ought to be...
I am always glad to see documentary films made without bias. Love me some unbeatable logic presented in a extremely articulate manner. All this without being insensitive to either groups.
The film has thoroughly expressed the argument that people quoting the bible to hate on homosexuals are basically misinformed. The interpretation of things and events and writings and even art changes depending on what time it is perceived for judgment.
The time when the bible was written in and eventually translated are remarkably different than the ones we live in right now. So how does it make any sense to hold up principals and values laid upon man thousands of years ago when the rule makers priorities were different. The Sodom and Gomorrah story has been very well explained as being one of the most misunderstood ones. Anti-Gay factions often quote the destruction of the twin cities of Sodom and Gomorrah as an example of god's wrath against the homosexuals. Apparently anal rape was considered the worst humiliation you could lay upon an enemy or a wrong doer as a punishment, completely without a homosexual desire to do so. What the people of Sodom and Gomorrah meant when they yelled at Lot to send the two angels out, so they could rape them was that they only wanted to deal out the punishment they deemed fit for Lot going against the towns rule against bringing strangers in.
The towns were known for there endless wealth and riches. To secure there goodies they literally banned the citizens from inviting outsiders inside there homes, lest they be thieves. Interestingly, as the movie points out, hospitality or entertaining guest in your house, a stranger even is one of the biggest rules in Christianity. Despite of looking at the destruction of the cites as a punishment for being a douche to guests, we in our twisted times, choose to see it as a sign against the wholly barbaric yet symbolic act of punishing ones enemy.
Wonderful stories to be heard. Do watch.
PS: There will be tears...
Eat Pray Love (2010)
A movie about a rich White lady
EPR stands for every reason why the rest of the world hates Americans. Its a rich menopausal ladies rant to find herself. Julia Roberts looks old and out of place. As do her yummy male co stars. Regardless, the film lacks the depth and understanding to deal with international cultures. Everything is fake, I don't buy the transformation - too easy. Its the classic narrow Hollywood world view which is based primarily on sitting inside ones office, snorting cocaine and dreaming of Buddha. Why did I even go for this movie. I put this film in the same 'WHITE LADY HARDSHIP TO VICTORY' slot where Sandra Bullock's Blind Side comes from.
But - the food shots in Italy were good.
Something Borrowed (2011)
Sh*t or Get off the pot!
Oh Jesus! why did I subject my self to this horrible terrible atrocity. I beg all of you considering this film, please stop and do not. It is the ultimate insult to a chick flick. clichéd, whiny and a million other annoying things.
you will loose your patience after a while (actually just 30 minutes), I was like - dude! sh*t or get off the pot.
and John Krasinski! Why? Why did you waste your time here, was it the money? Perhaps... so i will forgive you. Kate Hudson is nothing new. Ginnifer is well, a sob story.
Please avoid at all costs.
