Mr. Piper (1960– )
Just judging from the Teletunes, this may have been a good show.
18 October 2005
Accoring to the IMDb summary of this show "Mr. Piper" had Teletunes which were narrated fantasy stories. Somehow at least 11 of these Teletunes have been available in the American public domain for years. These include: Ali Baba, The Kind Hearthed Girl, The Story of Brave Molly and The Tin Soldier. These Teletunes are drawn with very crude, limited animation. Yet somehow with Alan Crofoot's narration, fanciful stories and good voicing, they are enjoyable enough. Alan Crofoot makes a likable host, the Teletunes are enjoyable stories and one can only wonder what the rest of the program was like.

I have read some sources that say that while this program was syndicated mainly in Canada and Britain it did have some very limited release in America. WGN-TV archival site lists this show on it schedule in 1965.

10 of the 11 available "Mr. Piper" Teletunes are available on a dollar DVD called "Herman and Friends" and The Tin Soldier is usually included in some Christmas Cartoon collections.

Casper in Mother Gooseland
18 October 2005
Once again the world's only friendly ghost desires a friend. But this time Casper gets to journey to Mother Gooseland instead of the real world. There in that magical land he encountered some of the famous nursery rhyme characters and two who really belong to the world of the Brother's Grimm.

This is a nice, pleasant Famous Studios cartoon and while some feel that most of their cartoons were too repetitive in story line(Casper is lonely - Casper scares people/animals - he gets friend - etc.), Famous' flair for quality animation cannot be denied. This cartoon is really good for children and it may be a bit sweet for some adults to sit through.

The only way to see this cartoon now is if "The Harveytoons Show" is currently being syndicated near you or if this cartoon is included in the few professional Casper DVD releases.

A Very Beautiful Cartoon
31 March 2004
A little blind girl is given an abandoned doll (who just happens to be Raggedy Ann) by a kind-hearted policeman. Through Raggedy Ann the girl's imagination comes splendidly alive in this wonderful forgotten Famous Studios cartoon that is filled with vibrant scenes, touching characters, a good score and grand direction. This cartoon is highly recommended for animation buffs of all ages and especially families looking for good entertainment. The policeman may have been played by radio and cartoon actor/announcer Jackson Beck (Bluto of the Popeye series). Available in the Public Domain in very good quality. Find it if you can, it's a gem!

Flash Gordon (1936)

A Serial Classic
9 October 2003
After 66 years "Flash Gordon" still has an appealing scifi/adventure/epic feel that many of today's science fiction adventures strive for and fail to deliver. The only way to fully enjoy this serial is just to sit back and not pick at anything (hokey effects, dialogue, why Flash doesn't go for Princess Aura etc.). And as for you older people who saw "Flash Gordon" back on the serial screen or on T.V. "back in the day", if you want this fine serial to remain appealing to future generations, get your kids/grandkids to watch this when they're young. It worked for me (Male aged 18 or under). 9 out of 10

Excellent B Western!!
25 July 2003
Down Laredo Way is a fun, exciting and at times funny western from Republic's later days that benefits from master serial/western director William Witney and a likable cast; the heroic Rex Allen, comical sidekick Slim Pickens, beautiful and hilarious Dona Drake, adorable Judy Nugent and Clayton Moore (without his mask) just to name a few. A good diamond mystery, humor, suspense, a beautiful gypsy girl, and plenty of action! All that and much more in 54 minutes. Unbelievable!!! Watch it!!
