The Ugly Truth (2009)
An unexpectedly decent movie
This movie was the sort of movie I started watching because it was late at night, there was nothing else on and you found out in the opening credits that Gerard Butler was starring in the movie, so I gave it ago. By the end of the film I don't think I've ever laughed so much for a movie in a long time. Gerard Butler gave a surprisingly brilliant comedy performance and a great American accent that if you didn't know, you wouldn't realise at all that he is Scottish in real life and quite the Scottish accent too. Since "300" (which I think is one of his greatest acting achievements), Gerard has really shined in the film industry revealing his acting talent in big films like "RocknRolla" and "How to train your Dragon", performing a variety of characters and now this film.
The main actress of the film Katherine Heigl (one of those big actresses who I don't know, but my parents do for some reason) gave an equally talented performance, making it great casting for a comedy duet display. This is a film that if you saw it on paper, you wouldn't think to watch it but 'The Ugly Truth' is so crudely funny, it's good to watch with not just witty comedy, but also a glowing romantic story.
Silver Linings Playbook (2012)
A Comedy-Romance that puts a smile on your Face!
The deserved Oscar-nominated, Bradley Cooper and Oscar-winner, Jennifer Lawrence are the two actors that made this film a phenomenal success.
The change of their maturity and relationship of their usual characters came quite a shock for me when watching this. Bradley Cooper seems to be the guy more at an upper level in many ways and more out there like Limitless, Hangover, Wedding Crashers and The A-team. In this film its amazing how he can portray a character that's has a great disadvantage in life and is trying his way to recover. He expresses more emotion in this film and better than any other of his previous movies and that is what got him the Oscar nomination.
Jennifer Lawrence is a actress who has become a real star so quickly in this industry. After watching this film a couple of days after seeing the Hunger games for the first time shows on what a great actress she is from playing a 17-18 year old born survivor to at least a 5 year older recovering widow with great distress in life. That I believe is what got her the Oscar this year. This is I think her first movie of her getting to play someone much older and be able to express her full potential as an emotional actress.
I must admit I am not someone who usually watches these kind of films with an essence of romance even though it was a comedy but the comedy was something that made you laugh inside and put a smile on your face. I also can't remember the last time I shed a few tears for a film especially at the end. I am also glad to see Chris Tucker again which we haven't seen since the Rush Hour films with Jackie Chan with also a rise in his sense of maturity from his previous characters.
Prometheus (2012)
Ridley Scott has done it again!
Noomi Rapace has become an alien star becoming the role of the lone women of the story like that of Sigourney Weaver. Sweden's star really starting her big film star career playing 'Girl with a dragon Tattoo' films then working with Robert Downing and Jude Law starring in 'Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows'has shown the world stars can come from anywhere.
The film itself is a sci-fi film prequel to the classic Alien films which follows well with seen links to the previous Alien Films in it. It is one of the best sci-fi films of the year with a great story of shocking moments and mystery. I am proud of Ridley Scott returning to his first massive films over 30 years ago and show they can still pull off a great action film. Some of us would even call this a horror or thinking that it should be rated an 18 film, but the fact is that if they thought that this a scary film then they have definitely not seen the first Alien films where the story continues on from what happens in Prometheus. The grand cast of also Michael Fassbender(X-men First Class) and Charlize Theron (Snow white & the Huntsman) the film is lightened up from their brilliant performances.
Can't wait for either Noomi Rapace and especially Ridley Scott's next film which I hope will be soon.
March of the Dinosaurs (2011)
The prehistoric journey of a lifetime
This documentary follows the breathtaking journey of a young elegant dinosaur named Scar (as you will find the reason of the name in the program). He takes on the migration with the herd of his edmontosaurus' as they escape the 4 months of the deadly winter in the Arctic heading south for the warmth and food travelling over 1000 miles. Narrated by the national star Stephen Fry, the documentary shows the amazing story of the curious, young edmontosaurus Scar discovering new dangers that will limit his chance of survival. The documentary also follows the story of Patch, a young male feathered, raptor-like Troodon. The story shows how Patch is living out at the Arctic forest where the edmontosauruses left at the start of their migration.
This documentary makes your bottom stick to your seat not wanting to miss a second of the story. As you watch Scar take his journey it feels as you are at a marathon with you just wanting to cheer him on facing unpredictable events but not just him, every other dinosaur taking this journey. To you, Scar is like a child at the start of the story just being as cute and curious around his world as he is living a normal loving life but in many other great stories an event happens that will mentally test his courage and strength that shows that this child is indeed a very special creature. With Patch though, he is someone that if he makes a mistake you would think in your head "FAIL", but yet if he does achieve something or if he does something unpredictable amazing then you would want to give him a hi-5 (even though it would probably hurt with his claws) and tell him "that was awesome". Patch is basically a teenager learning his ways with the girls but trying to keep himself alive. The documentary also has a number of other species of dinosaurs including large predatory dinosaurs that make the story a more exciting adventure. The CGI animation is very well detailed nearly as good of that from the 'Walking with dinosaurs' series. Comparison to the 'Walking with dinosaurs' series, it is just as good but will never be as big and famous than the BBC 'Walking with...' programs created over the years.
I would recommend this to anyone who would enjoy an exciting adventure in learning the knowledge of these magnificent extinct creatures with the prospect of action, battles, survival and a prehistoric journey of a lifetime.
