Rubber (2010)
Killer tyres with a twist?
A good old fashioned Troma-esque horror, packed full of cheap gags, over the top comedy violence and a big dollop of t&a - these were my expectations for Quentin Depieux's "Rubber" a movie about a killer tyre named Robert roaming the desert blowing off human heads with its telekinetic powers. I mean what other possible expectations are there to be had with a synopsis like that? But how wrong was I? From the very first frame I could see this was not going to be the schlock horror exploitation flick that I had envisioned, instead I was presented with a movie that is as smart and witty as anything from the genre that I have seen in quite some time, featuring excellent performances from the principle actors (where did Quentin find that tyre?) and some beautiful cinematography that almost has the movie bordering more on art house than grind house! On the flip-side it does suffer with pacing problems at times and the long periods of no dialogue tend to drag a little but clocking in at a meagre 85 minutes this can be easily overlooked. For anyone looking for something a little bit different then I would definitely recommend Rubber, it probably is the best killer tyre movie you are likely to ever see!
The Chaperone (2011)
Time To Play The Game!
Continuing their attempt to take over the comedy genre following the "massive success" of last year's Knucklehead, WWE presents The Chaperone starring sixteen year WWE veteran Paul Levesque AKA - Triple H. Now for me the last WWE "superstar" I wanted to see hit the big screen would be The Game, the man who has dominated WWE television for over a decade and will continue to dominate it for years to come not to mention being next in line to run the company once Vince Mcmahon finally kicks the bucket! But credit where credit is due and I have to admit that Trips makes for a passable leading man in this movie and would in no way be pinpointed as having no prior big screen acting experience as he holds his own against a decent supporting cast that includes comedy veterans Kevin Corigan, Yeardley Smith and Enrco Colantoni. The Chaperone is not a fantastic movie but then WWE Pictures have never released a fantastic movie so expectations will always be low, hence I cannot slate The Chaperone too badly as it achieves what it sets out to do as a fun inoffensive comedy that can be enjoyed by the entire family, just not a great one of course!
Darfur (2009)
Brave and Boll!
Take the world's so-called worst director and a bunch of washed up actors working from a non existent about the Darfur conflict and you would imagine "Darfur" to be a ceulloid travesty, but oh how wrong you would be. Uwe Boll (yes he of Alone In the Dark and Blodrayne fame!) has crafted a movie that is both poignant and thought provoking and once you have seen it it will remain etched in the memory forever. I doubt that a lot of film makers would have the balls to tackle a subject of what has gone on in Sudan but Boll having zero reputation to uphold, really had nothing to loose by making this movie and so has gone full steam ahead with a portrayal of the genocide that is truly harrowing to watch but is presented with such realism and I think that the graphic scenes had to be such as to truly drill the message home to the world. Credit also must go to the cast which includes the likes of Bily Zane, Kristanna Loken and Edward Furlong who were not working from a script so all had to develop their own characters and each one brings a brilliant sense of realism to the movie and I doubt that any of today's crop of Hollywood talent could have done a better job. If "Darfur" had been made by anyone else I think it would have been the talk of the town and a true Oscar candidate but sadly I doubt this movie will ever reach a wide audience as it should and that in my opinion is a true travesty.
