This film is in by no way perfect, however an overall rating of 5.2 is a disgraceful misjudgement! For a straight to streaming sci-fi, this is an epic. An all out action thriller with great performances, superb special effects, and all our resistance war.

Yes there is some slow-Mo (less than the first) - This seems most reviewers problem - I'm fine with it and in some cases, added beautifully to the action.

Not enough in the film to love the characters etc (bar the robot) but a fun ride all the same. Would have loved this to have been a series beginning with each warriors story as an individual episode.

Enjoy it on your own terms and ignore the Star Wars fan boys.

8/10.

... And I'll need an AA meeting after this terrible film... At no point was there any point to this pointless movie. Point your remote elsewhere. Pointless!

Watch to the end.
28 November 2020
Not as bad as most say. In fact gets much stronger to the end. Opens up new ideas, potentially explains parts of other series.

The 1st series is always slow. If a 2nd series isn't made due to people giving low scores after 1 or 2 episodes it will be a real shame that connections, links and expanding the world of Walking dead will be ruined.

Yes, Iris is annoying!

The series as a whole was good. Twists were strong. It could become very good!

Rise, Dawn and now a triumph with 'War'!
11 July 2017
I am a biased lover of 'Planet of the Apes'... Take these words with that it mind!

This is without doubt, the best 'trilogy' of the 21st Century!

From the opening scene, leading from a recap of past films in an imaginative and flowing manner, you are led back into this beloved new world along side friend or foe?! The ensuing drama that you are then taken along with, is breathtaking, shocking, brutal and Brave!

Andy Serkis and the other Actors who have mastered this unbelievable technology are magnificent, the Visuals are stunning, the shocks are unbearable, gripping and wonderfully woven into the faultless story, that grabs you, holds you and then breaks you over and over again!

Naivety aside, I understand a few issues may arise, such as 'Bad Ape', the Music being a little obvious, the Little girls reactions to a couple of dramatic scenes, however none are big enough to spoil in any way a quite remarkable end to a series that has become a huge hit. Ignore those reviews that typically focus on such minor detail.

So, go back and watch the Rise and Dawn of the Apes if you haven't already done so; Grab snacks and drinks, Book the film in 3D, "Shut off from the outside world" as 'VUE' states and witness a Masterpiece.

The Shallows (2016)

Not shallow at all!
10 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I want to start by stating I usually despise this kind of movie, but will give anything a watch and the Mrs fancied it, so on it went without expectation.

With a slow start, it shoe-horns in a narrative (back story) of loss and a reason to be there and there's some great shots of beautiful scenery and a beautiful woman, she's finding herself, a shark attack and it's a battle for survival...Basic, but well constructed premise.

It's no 'Blakely chick flick' though, and no 'Sharknado' type trashy but for some reason people enjoy... It's intense, it's beautifully shot, it's gory (at times) and for a one woman film is very well acted.

Many gripes involve the unrealistic parts to the movie 'The Shark size comparison to types of damage caused', 'The sharks motives', 'The pain and hunger factor' and 'Rising tide' being many of the previously read bad reviews.

It's not a true story and would be a pretty boring film had they gone down the super realistic route like 'Open Water' which nobody can take the time lost after seeing! Spoiler:

Motive - humans are in its feeding ground, and had past experience with humans.....Makes sense although a little far-fetched for sure.

Damage caused - The shark just might not of caught Blake as well as it had liked, just maybe....let it slide, it's a film!

Rising tide - If something so small ruins a film for you stick to documentaries please! It's a little annoying, but you don't know the wave and tide pattern of that particular 'fictitious' island based on land mass under the sea and the cove itself.

Hunger issue - There wasn't one! She tried a sea crab...didn't't like it, I'm hungry after breakfast.

This movie if taken for what it is, is suspenseful, somewhat heartfelt, and short enough to work. The ending wasn't how I'd of ended it, however a solid 7 none the less. Well worth a watch!

Ted 2 (2015)
7/10
Classic Macfarlane
26 June 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Ted 2; The next instalment on the big screen of the foul-mouthed, furry fiends battle in human society has everything I expected! Cracking out the random jokes, crude humour, wonderfully scripted cameo's, classic flashback scenario's and bad language to go along with stupidity.

Look the film is pretty much the same concept as the original and doesn't have anything particularly new. But if you enjoyed 'Ted' why would you want anything so? If you're into family guy, loved the first Ted and had a laugh with 'A Million Ways to die in the West' like I did, it'll give you the laugh out loud moments you desire. I wasn't personally in as many heart creasing stitches as the original or A million ways, however some high pitch squeals, a couple of snorts, a few grunts and film long smile made for a great trip to the movies.

It's nothing special or new, so can't rate any higher but does what it say's on the tin. Go watch fans of Macfarlane.

Arrow: My Name Is Oliver Queen (2015)
Season 3, Episode 23
5/10
My name is Oliver Queen - As Corny as it sounds.
15 May 2015
Disappointed with the ending to a mis-match season.

Firstly, I am not a superhero fan, as I find such films often go beyond ridiculous and unreasonable. However I was surprised how much enjoyment 'Arrow' gave me from the very first episode, including a superbly structured back story, which still runs strong today.

This series has had it's moments and still has the action, suspense and shock factor that has raised the series to over an 8 on this wonderful database. Unfortunately for me, I have been frustrated with the writing since Oliver survived an survivable death, 'meta- humans' were used, Ray was used in the same way as the shocking 'Iron Man' films and the unbelievably poor acted and stupidly invincible flash were involved. The arrow started as a believable vigilante, fighting bad guys and now everything has taken a turn for the unbelievable.

If the Arrow is gone and the new characters are what is left, this series will certainly be the last for me.

Mad Max packs a punch!
14 May 2015
Written and Directed by George Miller, we are taken on an epic roller-coaster ride down 'Fury Road' in this new 're-imagining' of a cult film.

Starring a lifetime best Charlize Theron, acceptable Tom Hardy and a surprisingly flawless Nicholas Hoult as an out of the norm 'War Boy', this picture magnificently uses every ounce of technology and special effect, as well as a huge amount of real stunts and crashes to give the audience some of the best action scenes in world cinema history.

Okay there are no real shock, the action is a bit crazy the characters weren't developed in depth, but who cares...It's called 'Mad' Max...it's in the title! My only personal disappointment is the lack of Aussie actors in the leads.

The film genuinely leaves the mouth wide open throughout and coupled with music scores by Tom Holkenborg this really is a must see this year on the biggest and loudest screen you can find!

This will finish after the hundred's of thousands of votes with an 8.2 - 8.5 mark my words and has a clear right to be in that top 50.

Ex Machina (2014)

Tense doesn't quite cut it!
21 January 2015
In this feature directed by the brilliant writer of such films as "The Beach", "Sunshine" and "28 days later" we come across a completely unique take on the already crowded AI genre of film. In fact, this could be a new genre of film altogether; possibly "scifiramiller" (Science fiction, drama, thriller.)

This being the first film directed by Alex Garland, mistakes were expected, however the film was likely to be solid, due to past writing efforts.

These expectations were not just surpassed, they were blown out of the window! From the very beginning, you are put into the shoes of our protagonist (Domhnall Gleeson), confused, intrigued and in awe of the beauty that the opening scenes transport us (Quite literally) too.

Eventually we meet the second of the films important characters in Oscar Isaac; who'm is outstanding in "Inside Lywelln Davis," yet horrendous in "A most Violet Year" and therefore could have gone either way in this feature. From here the tension builds and we start to find out the reasons for our passage to this idyllic place and the story takes hold.

Domhnall meets the beautifully designed and gorgeous new comer "Alicia Vikander", who's acting as an AI is perhaps the best ever on a film such as this, and the story develops into what we think is happening! Or is it...?

Watch to find out, because this film builds the tension, shocks and provokes through to the end, until you are left withe your jaw either on the floor or grinning from ear to ear, eager to talk about all that went on before with anybody that will listen!

A special mention to the sound behind this film, which worked hand in hand with the story and masterful directing to create the unbelievable tension and turn this film into the gripping "scifiramiller" that it is!

"I'm not "up" on my Oscar work, when films must be played to be considered, but how this hasn't been given even a mention is beyond me!"

A must watch!

The Good Lie (2014)
8/10
It would be a lie if anybody says they dislike this...
18 January 2015
A beautiful film based on the true stories of 'the lost boys of Sudan', excellently played by actors with which this story is highly personal given there backgrounds.

The film delves into the backgrounds of a group of Sudanese children cut off from there village and families, due to the atrocities of the civil war that ran through the country and follows there journey to Kenya and on towards America.

The film sparks emotion from the audience from the very beginning and continues to tie knots with them until the very end, as the 'family' try with everything they have to forget what they have gone through and blend with the society of America, and all of the issues America and societies alike have.

A few dove tails into the story later and by the end of the film you can't help but think about the story, the characters and the beautiful presentation of the film.

Furthermore, Reece Witherspoon really does get better with age, both within an acting capacity and 'physically cracking' category! Excellent performance.

I truly can't understand a reason why anybody could dislike this movie!

Gone Girl (2014)
9/10
A triumph!
18 January 2015
Warning: Spoilers
What a film!

The suspense throughout, aided by a superb music score keeps you on th edge of your seat, the storyline drags you in from the beginning and doesn't let you go until the credits roll, the acting, especially from Rosamund Pine is first class and not wooden as some critics suggest. The twists are jaw dropping at times, and although some are obvious, another tweak always keeps you guessing once again.

On top of all that, the film is beautifully edited and the shots throughout are masterfully constructed to give the movie a 'real' feel.

A few holes to the story are present unfortunately, but if thought hard enough about, can be papered over and certainly are strong enough to disrupt the film.

Now, a possible spoiler:

Finally, the ending is just excellent. Anybody who needs a movie to be clarified or 'ended' will be disappointed, but the film allows for your own imaginations and discussions to flow long after the credits have rolled.

How this piece of near perfection has been overlooked for awards is absolutely disgraceful!

Watch as soon as you can!

A most boring 2 hours.
17 January 2015
I'm not going to spoil it for anyone who wants to give it a chance and include all the details, nor am I going to go into depth about the problems with this tale; I am however going to warn about the pace of this tedious crime drama and pinpoint the issues!

Slow...

Nothing flows, the end scene had very little relevance to the film, characters came out of nowhere, not a single character was likable and to top it all off the whole story came away from the struggles of being an immigrant at that time and moved onto something completely different.

Oscar Isaac has done some Stirling work in the past, not least 'Inside Llewyn Davis' and Jessica Chastain in "The Help" and "Lawless" was flawless, but even they cannot save the slow and uninteresting dialogue in this film. One scene in a room with the two of them is 15 minutes long and there is a hefty pause between each line.

I've never entered a review on IMDb for a negative stance on a film, but this was so bad, it just needed one. A total bore, however if you liked American Hustle maybe you will enjoy this too.

Good luck to anybody who gives it a go.

Fury (2014)

Much better than expected.
22 October 2014
Hollywood's take on war isn't as bad as it sounds!

First and foremost, if you're a stickler for fact and realism, then there will be a few issues, however surely not enough to rate the film 1 star! Americans especially seem to be upset with this portrayal of War, as it shines there heroes as 'bad' at times. I take nothing away from what brave men and women have done throughout history in the name of peace, but the harsh facts are actually mentioned in the film! "Ideals are great, but more killing is needed to end this war" "Kill what's in front of you or be killed and get us killed too" are snippets from memory, arguing the case for soldiers needing to show harshness to get a job done! The story was created from true memoirs of different veterans that served in tanks. It can't be too far from the truth! There are people like that out there in the world and thank fury because perhaps we'd be Nazi dominated now - Extreme?

Back to the film, the acting is sublime from the main cast, which was always inevitable, the intensity of the whole film is fantastic and leaves you gripping the armchair tightly at times, and feeling a sense of trepidation at others, while the storyline is gripping and fun!

Not so keen on the laser like shooting, but it made it a spectacle I suppose and the love scene was clearly forced in for the love scene box to be checked and break up the action, but overall the the story, acting and filming from within the tanks was top notch and I recommend a watch!

The 100 (2014–2020)
8/10
Outstanding entertainment, being sold short by one time viewers!
22 September 2014
I will hold my hands up and agree the the first episode was diabolical, for a teenage audience and with many floors, but as nothing else was on, on a Monday evening, I thought I'd give the show a chance and Zeus's beard am I glad I did.

Firstly, I want to challenge what negative reviews have said about the premise. *Only 100 'juvenile delinquents'? As stated by most of the same 'haters' the ship is highly regimented and therefore it is highly unlikely there would be more. *Everybody looking too good? Nobody ever looked slap up and it's a void, petty argument, based on the fact that the actors are good looking! Unfortunately that's how it is and I certainly wouldn't want to be watching ugly people for an hour a day when I get that in real life! *Sending the fittest down, rather than the week or elderly? Surely the fittest will have a better chance of survival from the drop, landing and survival of whatever's down there and they'd done wrong - Those be the rules?

I could go on, as the show actually answers many of these as the episodes unfold.

Once you take the series as it is- That being Science Fiction (Emphasis on the 'Fiction' part) It's edge of your seat, can't wait to tune in next week, brilliance!

The acting is extremely solid for a cast of young actors, which makes for believable scenes and emotional moments and you really do feel for the characters. After watching 'Revolution' and the tripe that is 'Under the Dome' for full seasons, it is clear 'The 100' has some of the best young actors in the business, when you compare them to the laughable acting in the two aforementioned programs!

The change of scenes from ground, to space is excellent and the special effects are great without being too overbearing.

The best thing about the show truly is how dark it became very quickly, again, without being over the top blood and gore. It keeps you guessing from minute to minute and as quoted in the show "The more we find out, the less we really know" is a superb tag line for the show!

Each episode leads on brilliantly to the epic finale, that proceeds to an outstanding cliffhanger, allowing the show to go on in any direction; but also closing a few doors and unanswered questions behind!!

Here's to the new series and anyone willing to grit through the first episode I recommend 'The 100' for a roller-coaster of a show!

"We will see you again"

One of the best......Until the ending (Possible Spoilers)
4 June 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Near the end of this movie, I was thinking 'Good gracious, Tom Cruise has finally made a film!" Witty, well told, visually stunning, superbly acted and a more action packed version of Source Code - The reason for re spawning actually made sense in this flick as well!

Emily Blunt is now the love of my life...Just saying, but excellently played. I usually demand some sort of emotional attachment and structure, but this is so well scripted, it doesn't need it, especially with my instant yearning for 'Emily' (We're on first name basis in my head now) not to die.

All of this however was absolutely let down by the ending though! There were numerous places to end the film and make this a classic action- scifi, yet they neglected them all and went all Disney on us. I'll let you make your own minds, maybe your a fan of ridiculous happy endings, but what's happened to the classic cliff hanger! First X-men, now Edge of tomorrow....If Dawn of the planet of the Apes follows suit, I might just commit!

Make your own minds up though, go and see this because other than the let down of an ending this was quite spectacular!

(Don't read on if you don't want to know the ending...)

They all survive and nobody is the wiser.....Bull crap!

Better endings: - Emotional music as Tom wavers away in the water, until the screen fades to black. - The mysterious matter consumes Tom, causing his eyes to go black and then bang- End! - Eyes black and zoooooom.....Back much much much further to childhood or somewhere unexpected. - Goes black and camera fly's across the plain of dead aliens until we reach one that turns back on!

I know, I should be a writer, but again make your own minds up, because other than the let down of an ending this was quite spectacular!

Don't listen to the poor reviews.
27 February 2014
Orange Wednesday's are a weekly escape from the monotony of the working world (New Teacher - Little money - Stressed - Used to do absolutely nothing at Uni). Therefore over the last couple of years, as you can imagine, the cinema has been overused and a plethora of films have been watched, reviewed and loved. Being a sap myself and an ability to completely immerse myself within a movie; the usual comment coming out of the cinema is: "That was the best film I've ever seen!"...

Obviously that is never actually true, and probably isn't for this film, however I again came out the cinema saying the same thing. Within the first two months of this year: Wolf of Wall Street, 12 Years a Slave, American Hustle and Dallas Buyers Club...Now The Book Thief!

Now I had no idea what the film was about before stepping in the cinema, except a girl who steals books in the war. Even half way through I thought this film was a heart warming film about the war through a child's eyes. I was WRONG! If you know nothing about the story, the film is beautifully written, acted, portrayed (Life of Pi creators, done it again) and has bags of shocks, emotion and heartache. The other lad who viewed the film with me(In the same boat work wise) I have never seen cry. That man was broken!

The young actress, is going to be a superstar. Geoffrey Rush, although portrayed a "Disney Dad" as some reviewers suggested; was inspirational and perfectly cast, when compared to the book, which I have now read.

Another reviewer trashed the use of "bits of German" - You sir, are a fool. This is not Hollywood tact, the book does exactly the same thing and therefore the film took that same role.

Another reviewer gave the film "1 star" (Mainly due to the film not being realistic in 3 parts, which all played no real role in the film and therefore a poor point to make) It's a story based on some real life events, not a true story.

Rant over though, this film truly moved me (23 year old male) I know, I hid it well in the cinema! The film is just a Must see and although I probably wouldn't rate it 10 star (I never rate that highly) I felt I needed to raise the profile, due to people who have too much time on their hands to pick holes in minor parts of films and have to have their films more like a documentary, then a masterpiece for all warps of life and ages.

I will be using this in school as soon as it is out and will be a fantastic tool for developing writing!

Cracking film!

Humour, Drama, shocks and cliff hangers!
8 October 2013
I use this site like a bible, usually agreeing with general reviews and ratings, yet I have never written a review on this site before.

The poor rating has prompted a first review, as this show is one of the best BBC sitcoms to find it's way onto television! James Corden's timing is second to none, the writing is extraordinarily clever and cliffhangers keep you guessing and watching each week.

Granted the show is not always laugh out loud, but the show isn't slapstick...It's clever and interesting.

The series is only 3 episodes in, but I for 1 am gripped and those posting terrible ratings after only 1 episode, because they haven't laughed due to there being no 'high school humour' need to get a grip!

9 star, and a genuine admiration to Corden and Co
