Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
6.5/10
As other reviewers have highlighted, this movie is a trip. It truly exemplifies the mental gymnastics your mind sometimes has to go through to come to a simple realization.
I loved the concept of this film and the overarching themes are deep, emotional, and powerful. It explores topics like love, mental health, regret, and how simple, seemingly meaningless decisions have a butterfly effect on outcomes. For this alone, it is absolutely worth a watch.
What didn't land for me, personally, was the attempt of comedy- mostly in the first act. It just felt too slapstick and ridiculous. Juxtaposed to the deeper themes I mentioned above, it just felt like it didn't mesh and cheapened the experience a bit.
The second act got me back into the movie and I think it didn't a pretty good job and tying all the chaos together to show the viewer what this movie was truly about.
Kudos to everyone that worked on this movie. It was chaotic for the viewer so I cannot even imagine the monumental effort that was put into directing, costume design, and editing this film.
In conclusion- This film was a wild viewing experience, truly everything you've heard it to be. I wanted to like it more than I did, but I felt like it pushed me away at times with how ridiculous it was. Thankfully, it pulled me back in to appreciate the beauty of the film was trying to say.
Euphoria: You Who Cannot See, Think of Those Who Can (2022)
Keeps getting better
Really enjoying season 2 so far. Wasn't sure i would keep up with the series after season one but now I can't wait for the next episode.
I am consistently blown away with the cinematography of this show. Every shot is just brilliant. The use of color and lighting is beautifully encapsulates this twisted story.
Chien de garde (2018)
Hidden gem
This movie is a great character study examining the main character (JP) as he struggles to cope with the constraints of his dysfunctional, criminally involved family. His younger brother Vincent demands the attention of everyone around him, including the viewer, with his uncontrollable manic behavior that treads a fine line between affection and brutal violence. I really enjoyed the performances of all the actors in this chaotic movie. Reminded me a lot of the Safdie Bro's movies.
The Many Saints of Newark (2021)
Could have/should have been better.
I enjoyed the character aspects of the movie but that was about it. The movie felt shallow. Too much jam packed into 2 hours to really give the Sopranos the prequel it truly deserves. A miniseries would have allowed the space for this story to develop.
Cops (1989)
Listen to the podcast Running From Cops
I grew up on this show. My parents would let me watch COPS with them before they sent me off to bed. I always thought of it as an American treasure and never thought twice until listening to the podcast.
This show is rife with constitutional violations, producers tricking people or convincing intoxicated people into giving consent to be on television, cops being overly ambitious because they are being filmed, cops harassing the same person over and over, lots of editing, and even incidents of planting evidence to get the material they need to put on TV. This show is everything that is wrong with law enforcement in this country. What you see on this show is not reality. It's just entertainment at the expense of a person having one of the worst days of their life.
If you listen to the podcast it will definitely give you a different perspective on this show.
