Secret City (2016)
Good, but ...
This is a fairly engaging mystery/espionage series. I always like Anna Torv. I've been a fan of her since Fringe(does that mean I'm old?).
Strange to see her in a show based down under.
I only have one teeny, tiny complaint, and it has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with the show or the acting.
My one complaint: although I am not hearing impaired, always watch with the subtitles on, because I cant stand it when they say something in a low voice or over background noise or in and odd accent that makes a part of the dialogue unintelligible to me. I don't want to go back over and over trying to make out what precisely was said. So the complaint is about the subtitles.
On all of the subtitles, there is a visible flashing cursor either at the beginning or usually at the end of the text.
I know it's maybe peevish of me, but it drives me nuts.
That said, its a good show and I recommend it. Lots of twists and turns, also some ongoing side-plots. And hey -- it has Anna Torv!
Dark Winds (2022)
Great show in so many ways ...
Great pacing. So many layers of intrigue. No flashy WHAM BANG crap. Low key. And finally some Native American culture in a non-exploitive way. It's a good show and I hope it continues.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
Gee, if only there was more CGI ....
It might be interesting. I just have a hard time with movies that substitute computer graphics for actual acting and directing. La, la, la... Netflix won't allow me to submit a comment that doesn't drag on and on.
Doctor Who (2005)
Been loving the show for decades BUT ...
Isn't it way past time for a new doctor?
Is there something wrong with this gal that she can't get another job? She doesn't have the goofy grin, she has nothing Doctor Who. She's acceptable, kinda. She's just a token female Doctor. But she's no Tom Baker, or even a David Tenant.
Let her regenerate and replace her with someone who can really DO this role.
Station Eleven (2021)
Gotta say I am loving this...
Intense. It's not perfect: gets a little boring at a few points ...but just a few. I mean, I guess the have to build the background and everything.
Pleasantly surprised to see Gael Bernal in this one. I've liked him as actor as an actor since Y Tu Mama Tambien. He's back on my radar now. I'd love to see more of him.
The Umbrella Academy (2019)
The supposed smart guy just said ...
"... the world ending for the thrice time ..."
Okay: once, twice, thrice. First, second, third.
Would you say "the world ending for the twice time" ..?
No, it's the third time. All those writers, directors and and actors worked together to babble that stupidity on my screen.
Pack of frickin' idiots. But they all get paid bucketloads of money for their stupidity.
God's Favorite Idiot (2022)
Fun show!
Hilarious and(I can't believe I'm saying this) heart-warming.
My big criticism is that they cut it short and kind of left us dangling after only 8 episodes. Thing is, when they do they do that, they almost never follow through.
Geez, guys! Closure or follow-through.
The Card Counter (2021)
One of the worst movies ...
... I've seen in years. Crappy characters, crappy dialogue, crappy plot ...
I can't believe I sat through it. I just kept waiting for something interesting to happen. Is Willem DeFoe broke? Why would he even consider a role in a movie like this? Boring, boring, boring. Oh, and the background music especially sucked.
3% (2016)
Was not expecting it to be so good ....
... but it was great! Gets better every season.
I held back a star because of a few glaring plot flaws and the writers' use of the "surprising" twist ad infinitum.
Even the music was great! I just love the sound of Brazilian Portuguese.
As others have noted in the parents guide, the nudity is mild, though I did learn that Brazilian women never wear bras.
Tip: go ahead and do the English voice-over,: it's not perfect(none of them ever are), on this series it's probably the least annoying I've ever seen. I usually just do subtitles.
Four VERY bingeable seasons. Don't start if you have to work in the morning..
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2013)
Great, great ...
I just can't get enough Apple logos on the back of everything electronic. It's really cool. Apple. 10x the price for half the functionality. One of these days I should pretend I'm an idiot consumer and buy an Apple product. Maybe I need an Apple robot girlfriend. Hmmm...
The Day After Tomorrow (2004)
Three minutes of opening credits? Really?
Just get to the content, folks. This flick just reeks of B-grade.
Porcupine Lake (2017)
What a gem!
Low key and understated, but the emotions and the situations so intensely charged....
Mindhunter (2017)
Good watch, but ...
It has all these common flaws that come from young people trying to write about things as they were before they were born. Vernacular that didn't exist back then. Dialogue expressing things about which people were not conscious back then and so on. Some shows are worse than others about that, and this one is very bad about that, and this one is especially bad that way. Background music from the 80's. even.
Still, it's a good watch, especially for someone who didn't exist in the 70s, I imagine.
Light of My Life (2019)
It's been decades since I was so frofoundly moved ,,,,
What a beautiful story! If you're father who raised a daughter, or a daughter who was close to her father, this will blow your mind.
Personally, I raised my own daughter as a single dad(grand total of $15 in child support from her mother), and this film, especially in the beginning, is almost like a documentary of our relationship.
I wish everyone could understand what it's like for a dad to love his baby girl.
Watch this movie.
