Monster Brawl (2011)
I use the term "mildly entertaining" very heavily
The premise is simple. Monsters battle wrestling style until one wins. There's no real story. The wrestling matches are pretty boring and the events in some of them seem quite random.
It plays out like a Pay-Per-View wrestling event. It also shows small segments about the characters before the fights begin.
The acting from Jimmy Hart is terrible, especially when interviewing the guy who organizes the event.
The makeup is pretty bad. It seems like the makeup from the history of the monsters and the wrestling matches are noticeably different. I found this pretty distracting.
There are a couple of good things that I found. Lance Henricksen's voice announcing is great. Super creepy. I also thought that the sound editing was very nicely done.
The thing about this movie is that by the time the final battle comes, you don't really care anymore. The feeling is so monotone and the fights are so dull that you really kind of want things to be finished just to move the movie along. Oddly enough, I did manage to not turn the movie off but I know I could have spent my time better.
Bottom line, if they cut some of the gore out, this would be an entertaining movie for kids 8-12 but for those who are serious fans of the horror genre, it's a pretty major disappointment.
Dead Before Dawn 3D (2012)
If Nickelodeon had swear words and made horror movies
I saw the trailer for this and it looked like a decent movie. The review at UHM says that this movie is an example of a movie whose trailer is better than the movie itself. The trailer did it's job for me. I watched the movie. The movie itself wasn't that great.
This movie is what a horror movie would be like if Nickelodeon made horror movies. Not that the language and content are squeaky clean or anything but the overall tone is quite silly which makes it hard to take the movie seriously.
There were a couple of chuckle moments for me in the dialogue department but the idea of the movie falls flat. The zombie demons, or "zemons" as they call them, aren't trying to kill anyone which pretty much tells you all you need to know.
Parts of the movie seem like they were written as sketch comedy show segments. Although entertaining, it just made this movie not for me.
I give this movie a 4 out of 10 due to the few chuckles I had and Christopher Lloyd. If you're looking for a horror comedy on par with Shawn of the Dead, look elsewhere.
Grave Encounters (2011)
Honestly, I was surprised...
The premise is simple: A group of "ghost hunters" explore an abandoned mental hospital that's said to be haunted. There have been dozens of these kinds of movies. When I first watched the trailer I thought "Oh, awesome... another one of these movies", but I was actually pleasantly surprised.
The trailer looks lame, yes. It really doesn't do anything to help to get people to see the movie. I originally wouldn't have given this a view but I found it on a couple of decent lists here on IMDb.
The acting is actually pretty decent. Normally, I turn movies like this off after 10 minutes because I'm not a big fan of the "so bad, it's good" stuff. In my opinion the actors were pretty solid on selling the story.
The first half of the movie is set up just like those ghost hunting shows on TV. It was kind of boring but there was enough to keep my interest.
Is it scary? Eh. Depends on what scares you. Some of it seemed pretty predictable but all-in-all the story comes together pretty well.
I basically judge movies on if I'm disappointed I wasted an hour and a half of my life watching it, and I must say, this wasn't nearly as bad as I expected.
On a "horror" genre scale, I'm giving it a 7. It was intriguing enough to keep my attention and I was pleased with events in the movie enough to look forward to what was next.
