Argylle (2024)
A sheer joy!
I went into this movie with very low expectations from the poor trailer. However, this movie was a sheer joy to watch. It has been many years since I came out of a theatre with a smile on my face. This is such a hard movie to categorise! Its cheesy, absurd and delightful in all ways. The soundtrack is fun as are the characters. Sam Rockwell and Bryce Dallas Howard are brilliant and bounce off each other in an effortless way. They genuinely look like they are enjoying themselves throughout. When was the last time you went into a movie and just went along with it? No thinking too hard or being overly critical. Just go along for the ride and you won't be disappointed. This is what movies are all about. Fun, entertaining and with two likeable leads. Henry Cavill is always outstanding along with the supporting cast of John Cena, Bryan Cranston, Catherine Ohara and Samuel Jackson. In a world that takes itself too seriously, sit back and let yourself go. More movies like this need to be made. The cast are simply outstanding in roles that are out of their normal scope. This will be rewatched for may years to come and may even become a classic. Don't believe the haters. Believe the optimists.
19-2: Episode #2.1 (2013)
Jaw dropping
One of the best episodes of television out there. The long take is an achievement that few can pull off to this standard. (I can only assume that the first series of True Detective may have taken inspiration from this episode) Grips you from the first few minutes until the emotional heart wrenching end. All the actors are flawless in how their characters react to the evolving situation. Why I am the first to write a review of this wonderful piece of art in 2023 is beyond me. A must see episode that everyone should watch in horror. Bravo to the entire team that created this episode. I was thinking about it for a long time afterwards.
Extraction (2020)
Immense Action Scenes - Great performances all round.
Chris Hemsworth puts everything into this performance. The action scenes are so intense they draw you right in there. Nothing cheesy or lame about the plot, just solid performances by everyone involved. The characters are believable enough to root for without resorting to outlandish stereotypes. Everything you could want in a film and is far better than a lot of mediocre hyped up dross that seems to hit mainstream cinema. Unlike most standard action films that end up forgettable, this one stands out from the crowd. Instantly rewatchable with some jaw dropping action scenes. Netflix is killing big screen cinema with gems like this.
Brittany Runs a Marathon (2019)
Great film to inspire everyone to get living!*********
Simple, honest film about feeling good about yourself by actually getting off your backside and doing something. For those that feel depressed in this modern world, where it easier to sit in and vegetate, eat fast food, surf social media, overindulge in alcohol and drugs, this film should serve as an inspiration to go outside and enjoy the simple things in life.
Jillian Bell shows a determination that does justice to the main character of Brittany and goes to De Niro lengths of acting to achieve this. (She lost 40lbs and started to run for real). This kind of motivation shows on the screen as the character develops from someone unhappy with her life to achieving a goal that required incredible drive and self discipline.
For anyone looking for a reason to change their lives for the better, watch this film. If it doesn't do it for you, just go back to your FB, Instagram, Twitter or Snapchat and continue watching everyone else living their lives.
Remember, running outside costs nothing.
12 Monkeys (2015)
Sooooo underrated. Time will be rewarded.
12 Monkeys is a show that is going to grow into cult status in the coming years. People will wish they could go back to 2015 to watch it as it unfolded, series by series, and knowing it has a proper ending that satisfies on all levels. In my top 5 TV shows ever made and one of those rare ones that slipped under the radar. UK audiences are mostly unaware of this timeless classic. A series that has that rare quality of being able to be rewatched over and over. The story shifts to brain exploding levels while keeping to the very principles it started off with. I don't remember a series that made me want more since Lost ended. All the cast played their parts exceptionally well but the actress who plays Jennifer should have won an Emmy.
Remember, the ending is the one you choose.
The Lone Ranger (2013)
The Way Blockbusters Should be!
This is the first time where i feel i have to comment as the "reviews" on here are totally unfair and the critics have got it all wrong. Again. This is a great, tongue in cheek and very entertaining movie. All the characters were well portrayed and the chemistry between Hammer and Depp spot on. Most of the stunts are done by real people and not CGI which definitely shows. I get tired of endless CGI and action from start to finish which becomes boring (Transformers 2/3anyone?) This has a good story and is not afraid to take its time which is is refreshing for a modern blockbuster. The story has everything from good humour(I found myself laughing out loud throughout), good story, interesting characters and great action. Lets not forget the famous score which fits perfectly into this movie and really gets the hairs on the back of your neck up when it kicks in! Remember. There's never been a statue to a critic. Make your own mind up and give it a chance. Its the best blockbuster/swashbuckler i have seen for some years. Enjoy.
