Hard Candy (2005)
painfully bad
this movie succeeded in making me feel terrible. and not because of all the horrible torture scenes, no, but because it made me sympathise with a pedophile.
this movie is horrible on almost every level, the characters are shallow, the so called anti hero, Hailey, is so one Layered, that she is basically a sheet of paper, with the word revenge written on it. and thats it, no explanations of why, she is like that, what happened to her, no character development through the movie, she is basically just a psychopathic sadist, on what seems to be a revenge rampage. Jeff is the victim in this movie, and even thou he is a pedophile, who was there at the murder of a girl, you still sympasthise with him. And thats just all wrong, why would make a movie where you sympathise with a pedophile...? is it done on purpose? or is it just really poor film making?
not to mention the whole realistic issue with a small 14 year old girl dragging a man around his house, tying him up. I am specially impressed with how she got him to his "suicicde position". I am a grown man, and I don't think I could have done that to someone unconscious. there are many weak points of this movie, the neighbour scene, why? clearly something is going on, Hailey is bleeding, she hears noise, and then... nothing... ???? .... ???? WHYYYY???????? The ending as well, she talks him into suicide, after the torment she put him through, and he accepts that, on the notion she will "clear" his name.... yes that seems very believable...
i would not recommend this movie to anyone. its just almost 2 hours of terrible
Gummo (1997)
brilliant
i love this film, and i wish more film makers would try an portrait a situation as good as Korine does here. When you make something that basically new, even in cinema, you bound to be hated upon. but what this movie does for me, it might not do for the next guy.
some people complain about the lag of a traditional story line, while others don't understand the symbolism, that doesn't mean it doesn't have any. but what this movie does so brilliantly, is to project feelings upon you. feelings we don't necessarily like, and find uncomfortable to process. and i personally love when i get emotionally challenged by a film, even if it is uncomfortable. Only few films manage to do this, but Gummo is one of them. Its a movie about a derelict town, and the people who comes with it, its not a place you wanna live, and this movie portrait that perfectly.
Grisen (2008)
An excellent subject!

As a Dane, the subject of free speech vs Religion, have been an issue, that have been heavily debated ever since the "Muhammad crises" in 2005 (when a news paper published 12 drawings of the prophet Muhammad). Whether you believe in one thing or the other, this film really raises a key issue, in a humorist way. the whole problem is the fine line between free speech, freedom and respect towards others, this film really illustrates that problematic issue.
the plot evolves around a picture of a pig, which is removed from an elderly patients room at a hospital, on the request of his fellow patients son, who is a Muslim.
whether or not Muslims would be offended by a picture of a pig, is not really the point of the film, no, the pig merely works as metaphor, for the relationship between two different cultures on a colliding course.
I rate this film 10 out of 10, its well produced, but more importantly, it raises a very important issue, that anyone who lives in the western world may encounter, which is, where should the line between personal freedom vs respect towards others be drawn.
