Mars (2016)
Season 1 awesome. Season 2 descends into Netflix garbage
Season 1 was great and is informative, educational and engaging. Solid science and a captivating watch.
Season 2 quickly throws science out the window and spends most the season promoting climate change agenda on earth.
Disappointing.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
Confusing and dull
I get the impression this film was written by multiple writers - many of whom have not seen star wars. A confusing and pointless mix of scenes written purely for visual effect but lack any sence or reason.
Vice (2018)
Interesting information but put across terribly.
I don't know much about Dick Cheney and I thought the information the film told was very interesting.
However the film was very hard to follow. How it was put together made for absolutely terrible story telling. We heard many others in the cinema complaining of the same.
As people were complaining about how hard it was to follow, literally 2 minutes later the film hits us with a very confusing poetry scene. We were all left wondering what the hell was happening!
The film also has a huge left wing bias, so expect the usual digs and negative language at conservatism / republicans. But it's Hollywood, so it's to be expected.
Christian Bale nailed his role, absolutely great performance.
So in conclusion, it's an interesting film with a great lead performance... but totally let down by confusing storytelling and cheap political bias.
Maze Runner: The Death Cure (2018)
Predictable. Illogical. Badly written
The third installment about a bunch of brats intent of sabotaging the efforts to save mankind. Worst of the 3 by far. Every scene is predictable and the script is straight out of a teen drama. Why give the enemy guns if they refuse to use them at every oppurtunity? Character decisions make absolutely no sense and done purely to drag the film out for another 5 minutes.
Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
everything a sequel should be.
Given Ridley Scots recent work Alien Covernent, I was highly skeptical of this film. However his role in this film was limited and I'm so glad it was, as the script, cast, story line, cinematography and acting was all spot! The film is set in the near future of the original and expands on the original story line.
The style and pacing of the film matches the first and improved CGI and a higher budget really allowed them to go all out and create some stunning visuals.
I don't think I've ever said this about a sequel (perhaps excluding Aliens by James Cameron) but, if you're a fan of the original, I highly recommend you give this film a go.
Rogue One (2016)
Explosions and great action scenes, but void of any story
This film had a lot of potential. The characters they chose were quite iconic and had a lot of scope for character development.
Instead we just got action scene, after action scene with absolutely no back stories to any of the characters. Such a shame as developing characters like the blind jedi could have really added depth to the film. Instead of any dialogue, flash back or anything to help develop the character, we get "oh, he's just a blind jedi" and that's it. Move on to the next character.
The target audience for this film seems to be gold fish. Or any viewer who's memory can't last more than 5 minutes.
Any minor plot in this film had to be repeated by different characters every few minutes in case we had forgotten.
Such a shame that this film favoured action over substance. I really hope future star wars film return to the focus of story telling as opposed to fitting as many action scenes as possible.
ARQ (2016)
Terribly written
You know those horror films where they know the murder is outside but someone decides now is the best time to go outside because they left their favourite CD in their car? That's ARQ.
The actions of the characters make no sense.
For any logical thinking person the film and drama would've been over in 20 minutes. But instead the characters need to make a serious of ridiculous decisions for the sake of dragging out the film for 50 minutes.
Several back stories about various characters were hinted at but never extended past a single short conversation or comment.
The idea was great and had great potential, but plot and characters were very poorly developed.
Ghostbusters (2016)
I feel like I lost 50 IQ points watching this movie
I've watched the original, but not for years and wouldn't say I'm a hardcore fan. I felt indifferent when I heard they were remaking it.
Fortunately I got to see this for free. What an absolute mess.
Was this film written by a 10yr old?
The script and character decisions make absolute no sense. No one acts like that in real life.
Is shouting supposed to make the joke funnier?
The first two minutes let you know what's in store. A confusing narrative with nonsensical extreme sexiest stereotypical characters littered with shouting and toilet humor.
Children under 10 might find some of the jokes and characters funny.
I'm just baffled as to why/how these films get approved and funded. Did anyone even read the script before approving and giving this film a $140,000,000 budget?
Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)
Remake of Episode IV
It would of been nice if it was advertised correctly, as a remake of the original Star Wars film. But I guess they wouldn't of made as much money that way?
It's essentially a more child/teen friendly version of A New Hope.
It's exactly the same story and character types, but with cheap attempts at humor and instead of a badass bad guy (darth vader) you get a bratty kid who has temper tantrums (kylo ren).
It bought nothing new to the table and didn't progress the story in any way.
We still have no idea what the main characters have been doing the last 20 years.
Parallels (2015)
awesome idea but executed horrendously
Where are these high reviews coming from? Either fake reviews paid for by the film maker or todays population is getting dumber.
I think the idea is great. Strange building jumps between parallel universes, brother and sister on a quest to find out how their family is involved, got to get to the core world, etc etc Premise is right up my street and if I was pitched that as a TV Show, I couldn't give it the green light fast enough. How great would it be, each episode is of a new world that adds another piece of the puzzle.
HOWEVER.
The writers have royally screwed it up. The script is amateur at best, filled with predictable clichés, decisions of the characters makes absolutely no sense, acting is so wooden... but what do you expect when they were given such a terrible script to work with. It generally was painful to watch. I can't believe at how great a job they did at completely butchering such a promising idea.
Jurassic World (2015)
Absolutely ridiculous. Complete nonsense.
Premise of the film is as follows. I'm not joking it's actually true.
...
Finally they've made a successful Jurassic Park tourist attraction. However the military secretly get involved behind the scenes as ask the park to create a brand new highly intelligent invisible and bullet proof dinosaur. Yes you read that right... a highly intelligent invisible and bullet proof dinosaur....
...A invisible bullet proof dinosaur....
Which without ever having interacted with humans knows how they think and how to trick them.
Of course the dinosaur escapes and begins to kill everything. No one ever stops to ask what other dinosaur species made up this genetic hybrid... They have to find that out the hard way, bit by bit, when a simple phone call would of helped them massively.
This is all happening whilst the 2 main terribly acted kids think it's a good idea to ditch their guardian and go off track into the middle of a dinosaur infested island... alone.
Mean while the park ranger teams up with the raptors to go hunt the dinosaur. But that doesn't work because... the invisible bullet proof dinosaur can speak dinosaur... so he talks to the raptors and convinces them to turn on their human leaders.
Obviously the next step is to get the T-Rex to help the humans. Luckily this lady with a high heels and a flare can out run the T- Rex let it chase her.. plus the invisible dinosaur can't speak T- Rex... so her plan works.
I just can't understand how films like this get made without consulting experts to see if the ideas are actually feasible.
They had a HUGE budget, a HUGE fan base ready to see the film... and they churn out this rubbish.
Why not consult a dinosaur expert when writing a script that revolves entirely around dinosaurs?
Project Almanac (2015)
left after 30 minutes
After 30 minutes I couldn't take it any more. Why is this film shot in a 'found footage' style? It added absolutely nothing to the story and there was no reason for it, nor was it explained.
It was incredibly hard to watch. Half the time the camera is slanted at an angle and the other half, it is held so low down it is as if a child if holding the camera facing up. It is quite disorientating trying to keep up and work out what is supposed to be being filmed.
If the camera work wasn't enough to completely ruin the film (which it is) the script is so cliché, predictable and unexciting.
If Megan Fox invited me on a date to go watch this film, I'd decline.
The Room (2003)
worst film ever made. watch with friends and beer!
Hands down the worst film I have ever seen.
Do not watch this film on your own, or in a serious mood. You will absolutely hate it and it will be a complete waste of your time.
I watched it after being recommended it as a 'so bad, it's good' film by a friend. We got a group together and plenty of alcohol and watched it. Hilarious.
The film makes absolutely no sense.
The film is an absolute joke. One of the characters changed actor half way through the film!!!!
This is not mean to be a comedy. It's just such a poorly written, acted and directed film that makes it hilarious.
Lucy (2014)
Luc Besson.. Why?!! I expected this from others but not from you!
Luc Besson, you really let me down!
I've been a huge fan of his past films. Leon, Fifth Element, Nikita, Unleashed, Taken, etc etc etc
The trailer to the film made it look like standard epic Luc Besson film. However it seems he clearly failed his basic science education at school.
There so so much wrong with the science in the film, and I'm no scientist! I enjoy reading about science and have retained much of my science education from school and right from the start when it was mentioned "what if you could use more than 10% of your brain?" .. I assumed that would get corrected a few moments later... not be the premise and explanation for all of Lucy's abilities.
Luc Besson seems to think having higher brain functionality allow you to time travel?
To be clear. The whole "10% of your brain" argument has been refuted many times and is decades old. 12 years ago when I was at school we were taught how this statement was total BS. Seems Luc Besson didn't get the memo and no one thought to tell him before he started the film.
None of the characters have any depth either. Morgan Freeman is... Morgan Freeman, standard 'I speak slowly and deeply which means anything I say appears profound'. Scarlet Johansons does nothing to make anyone connect with her character.
The drug they are transporting at it's current state would be legal... So why did they went to the effort of kidnapping I have no idea. Fedex would of been much cheaper.
This film is NOT for: People with basic science education People with common sense
The Human Race (2013)
cool idea, horrible execution
The idea could be pretty promising (taking into account the ending).
However the film is completely let down by odd camera angles, bad acting, horrible script and complete lack of story or character building.
I imagine this is someones first attempt at writing a script for a film. You can see that whoever wrote it really did try to have character development and sub plots.. but the attempt really failed.
Don't watch if you have epilepsy!
There are several scenes that flash for no reason.
I think the director was somehow trying to use the flashes to build suspense or heighten the drama.
