Kafir: Bersekutu dengan Setan (2018)
Could Be Better
This movie is great, actually. The acting is amazing, with great (although not too complex, possibly to get the more mysterious vibe) characterization. All of them, especially Putri Ayudya, she deserves Piala Citra of her own. Her change of character, her change of voice, her change of look, it's just the best I have ever seen in Indonesian horror for a long time. The cinematography is also beautiful; every scene is good looking (too dark, perhaps, but it still supports the tone of teh whole movie). The plot of this movie is constructed neatly and systematically; it's hard to not lose focus. The aura surrounding this movie is gripping and mysterious, which gets me excited and scared at the same time. That is why it's so hard to see when this movie gets into its final act, it failed spectacularly. This movie got predictable pretty quickly, and seemed too rushed. and the twist isn't that good either. That basement scene is a treat to see on screen, but it's not very convincing and I blamed the director for the failed execution. It leaves me with a "meh". At the end, I appreciated this movie for trying to be different, but I knew this movie could be better.

Too Simple of a Movie
This movie is very entertaining, especially the part with Soleh Solihun. He's a talented comedian, and I appreciate him for that. But the laughs are too shallow and low in quality; just like this movie in general. I appreciated Prilly Latuconsina's acting as well, she's very good in this movie and she has the potential to be better. It's just the script doesn't even try to help with that. Other than Prilly, everybody's acting felt too over-the-top (Dinda Kanyadewi and Surya Saputra) or fell flat (Titi Kamal and Raditya Dika). But, of course, the problem lies within the script, which is too shallow to appreciate (what is the killer's motives? just that? I laughed at that). I understand this movie wants to be simple; but not this simple, of course. This is a movie for theaters, not for television. And they do not even try. It's like they just gave up or something. I hope Raditya Dika can make better movies in the future.
