Anna and the King (1999)
Halts a channel surfer in action
It was just another Sunday afternoon recently, and I was typically channel surfing trying to find something good to watch. Not much into tv, but I happen to note Jody Foster in a movie and was curious about whether I had seen it before. I was glued to the set after missing probably more than 1/2 hour of it, and did not move. Yun-fat Chow was superb. I never saw him before in anything, but since watching this film, was told he was in the relatively recent "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon". He didn't do any martial arts in this move (Anna and the King), but I was told he was as good as Bruce Lee in martial arts. (arguably, perhaps as I am a huge Bruce Lee fan.). Any ways, it may be construed as a chicks film, but I thought there were some disturbing parts in it, as the young lovers/monks...are tortured and murdered while King needs to keep up with tradition. I don't know whether or not this film was true to history, but I would definately recommend it for anyone who wants to put down the converter for awhile from surfing.
Three Wishes (1995)
Its a dog...no its a plane...no its a drifter who suddenly appears injured by a car?
Although I must admit I cried several times towards the ending of this movie (probably a highly emotional day for me), I really thought there were a lot of missing pieces in it. The most predominate I suppose is the almost total absence of the plot containing "Gunny" youngest son after we learn he has cancer. The mother continues to date and socialize, even bed a drifter. The audience finds themselves wondering what happened to the young child and filling in blanks themselves. (all the while the child is day dreaming in his bedroom? No wonder he talks to the dog since everyone else has forgotten him...
