Pompeii (2014)
Disappointing
I have been obsessed with Pompeii for a while, and I am a big fan of action movies, so I thought I would absolutely adore Pompeii the movie. There were so many things that were pretty awesome about this movie like the costumes, the scenery and the effects, and then some really bad things. The most horrendous atrocity in this movie was Sutherland's acting. First of all, he doesn't translate to historical pieces to start with (not his fault), so he should have never been casted. Second, his lines were delivered so awkwardly, you could hear the audience's confusion. Any emotion was drained out of every scene he was in. I think if Kiefer Sutherland was not in this movie, I could have overlooked most of the other issues, but he was in this movie, so here we go. Next off, there were many lines that just didn't work in the movie and they were forced into the movie for some odd reason and it was obvious (such as the "Why so serious" line). I also wish they changed the whole opening, rather than show Milo's background, which tired and overused, just introduce him as a gladiator of Pompeii and friends with Atticus. This would leave more time to build relationships within the city and not seem as crazy of reach that he would die for a girl he literally just met (he could have been in love with her for a while). Also, it would have been neat if they used some real life stories to make the movie more well rounded. And my last complaint/note, the audience shouldn't have to yell "Finally" for the action scenes of an action movie. Took too long to get to any real action. The could have had much more interesting gladiator scenes to add to the action, but they were all pretty flat.
Elysium (2013)
This movie is essentially the same as District 9
I really wanted to like this movie. The acting was good, the visuals were cool, but the characters were flat. I felt like there was no choice in the movie, either. A good story will present you with a moral dilemma, and allow the audience to choose right and wrong. This movie did nothing of the sort. The people living on Elysium were not shown at all. They were almost backgrounds. You only saw the corrupted people in charge. I find it very hard to swallow that an entire group of people would think exactly alike as if they were one person. Movies with messages like this should have both sides to the story, and there wasn't. And knowing this movie was made by the same person as District 9, it was frustrating. Both movies have the same moral message, and are sci-fi movies. The worst part about these two sci-fi movies with the same message is the fact that they have the same issues with story telling. No view on how "the other side" lives and thinks. This movie was flat, and often dull, and very transparent. I feel this movie thinks too little of its audience and their ability to decode a movie. It hands you what side to choose, and what to feel on a platter and doesn't expect you to think. The overall message is also too in your face. We get it already, both movies are about immigration reform, their isn't much else to them. I think the director should look into making documentaries and stay away from story telling.
Chained (2012)
Dull and a Waste of Time
This movie is flat, boring and not at all inventive. The acting was poor overall. The script was terrible. The lines were awkward and had no impact. There was no terror, creepiness or sense of fear in the movie, which is odd because of the main concept and violence in the film. I felt the movie glossed over some important stuff that would have been interesting, such as showing more of Rabbit going up in the house, and not jumping ahead so quickly. I felt the reasoning for the evilness in the main villain tried to make you almost feel sorry for him, but I do not think it was a reason for him to do what he did, he was just evil, so it was almost unnecessary. As far as watchability, this movie was so dull I had to skip ahead several times because I couldn't bare to watch it any longer. I honestly don't understand why people enjoyed this movie.
Battle: Los Angeles (2011)
I loved this movie
OK, so I guess I am one of the few that loved this movie, but I think it is awesome. If you don't like sci-fi, well, then of course you won't like it. I can never understand why people go see movies when they dislike the genre. This movie is like a war movie mixed with sci-fi. It has all the elements of a good war movie, then instead of fighting another country, the soldiers are fighting aliens. The creatures were interesting and the characters were likable. I felt myself rooting for them all the way through and when the credits went up, I was already wanting a sequel. I really enjoyed the pacing and the level of action. I was happy to see another action sci-fi movie, rather than a horror sci-fi movie. If you like sci-fi and war movies, you will love this movie.
