Southland (2009)
Started out OK, but.....
I gave the first episode a pass, premiers can be tough to judge as they set up the premise and characters. I was looking forward to this week's episode to see if they built on the momentum, or if it was going to bog down in a mire of formulaic cop show drivel. Sadly, it has. The writing is stagnant, and the acting forced. I found the detective pair, have they even said their names, lackluster and at times painful to watch. The young mom in the April 16 episode gave one of the worst acting performances I've seen on TV in a long while.
The pacing of the show, at times, grinds to a halt. Swicthing between the story lines, at times for only a quick moment, causes the show to be quite fractured and hard to follow. I found myself often zoning out as the show just sludged its way through the hour.
The interaction between Sherman (The Rookie) and Cooper (The training officer) should have been the main focus of the show. This is where Southland shines, but alas, it's only a sliver of what we get each week.
The energy of Southland needs to ramp up exponentially or I for one will be finding something else to watch at 10pm on Thursdays.
Knight Rider: Knight Rider (2008)
The writers went on strike for this?
So hundreds lost their jobs in the resonating fall out of the writers strike, and this is the best they could come up with? Most scripted TV is un-original, tired, poorly scripted drivel. When was the last time a writer came up with an original idea or didn't steal a show from another country?
Didn't NBC learn with the horrific Bionic Woman remake last year? What's next, a remake of "Riptide" in 2009? I can see new versions of Remington Steele, The A-Team, The Love Boat, Melrose Place, The Fall Guy, Dallas, T.J. Hooker, B.J and the Bear, Dukes of Hazard, Heat of the Night, and Murder She Wrote somewhere on the horizon.
Pineapple Express (2008)
Probably one of the 5 worst movies I've ever seen.
Seriously, who thinks anything in this movie is funny? "Your car committed suicide" was the only line to illicit even a chuckle out of me. The rest is just people running around like morons and yelling a lot. This is what the American Comedy genre has de-evovled to? I just don't get it.
And like someone else mentioned, so much of the story is just ludicrious. So, a guy bleeding to death, another in his underwear and his ear shot off, sitting in a diner eating breakfast, and no one notices or cares? And folks, Daylight savings always happens on a weekend, not a Tuesday. That's all I needed to pretty much check out right there.
Go watch paint dry instead.
Tin Man (2007)
Wake me up when DG dies
Zooey Deschanel goes through the motions delivering mindless flat dialouge devoid of all feeling and emotion that makes novacaine-less root canals seem appealing. She's just horrible, every line as bland and boring as airline food, and the big-eyed "Im trying to appear bewildered" look is just annoying. It's hard to get past it, a better actress may have saved at least saved this to the "watchable" level.
I'm trying to get through this, sort of like having to finish your brussel sprouts and Thanksgiving dinner, but I don't know if I'll make it. The pacing is horrible, and at least on my TV, the sound is so low that the commercials wake the neighbors. This should have been a three hour movie instead of 6 hour miniseries.
