Holmes & Watson (2018)
Parody+ZAZ inspiration
When i saw this movie i thought "haters gonna hate"... But i like it.
It's a simple parody of the Robert Downey Jr/Jude Law movies. It doesn't try to be more than that.
There are some pieces of the old Zucker Abrahams Zucker parodies.
The actors are good enough (specially JCR), the story is funny and the sets are great.
Don't be reluctanct to watch the movie because of the reviews. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and i respect them all, but i thing that many people expected a "serious" and accurate movie and this is not the case.
Exeter (2015)
Do you know...
Do you know when you watch a movie that was released a couple of years ago, and you think: "Why people didn't i liked this movie then? Why it had so low rating?"
This is those kind of movies. I love it. It does not try what it is not. Its a fun, fun-horror movie, but that kind of comedy which the director didn't try to make it fun on purpose. It's a kinda of a natural fun.
It's entertaining, not bad acting, a glimsy of low budget but a lot of effort.
7 out of 10. I enjoy it.
Trash (2014)
It's a nine!
I'm Portuguese and i speak reasonably well English. So i was able to watch this movie with no subtitles. Thanks God! The subtitling was awful, translating Portuguese to English. How can i resume this movie? Tropa de Elite meets Da Vinci Code? Weird no? No, nothing like that. This is an amazing picture of poverty, hope, friendship and trying to do the right thing, no matter what. It's hard to me to explain why i loved this movie. But i have no trouble to explain the main message: Brazil is a corrupt and dangerous country, not because of the common thieves, of the poor people, but because of the corrupt police and the rich and powerful people. A poor thief could steal a couple of bucks, a rich one could steal millions.
RoboCop (2014)
Weak Remake
I loved all the original Robocop movies. All single one of them. If you are like me, and compare the remakes with the originals, you are not going to like this flick. With so many FX, CGI and other endless possibilities of special effects, how come the FX from the original movies were much entertaining than these? I'm not saying that they were better, just more appropriated to the movie and to the scenes. Someone thought about José Padilha to direct this movie because someone remember the "favela storming police attacking scenes" from Tropa de Elite. It's reminds you when you watch some action scenes, multi targeting and shooting, bullets flying sequences. A little disappointing. A weak, non original enough, remake.
The Last Days on Mars (2013)
Decent, good enough to watch
It could be better in so many ways. The geography of Mars could be better displayed, the musical/sound score could be better, the acting, the screenplay, yes, it could all be better. But is not that bad. It reminds me some 80's movies, with low budget but on a great premise. The idea for the movie is really good. An alien virus that turns people into some kind of zombies. But there is one thing that really bugs me. You are watching the movie and wondering "If only...". If only the Mars atmosphere could be more red, and look dangerous, like other Mars movies. If only the story could be better told, if only we had more thrilling music, if only the movie could get to the zombies faster, and stay on that part of the story, if only... If they could do all that it would be a 9. Because they don't, it remains a 5. It's like a draft for a better movie. But good enough to watch.
Red Scorpion (1988)
One of the best
I'm not the biggest fan of action movies. But i love this one. Good action scenes, excellent scenarios, a not-ridiculous story. It's for entertainment, for sure, and that's all. The acting is just enough, no need for amazing acting. I love the "rebirth" theme with the indigenous character, realizing what is "good" and "bad" for those people, for those who lived in that country. Lundgren is just like Scharzenneger was in the early movies. Acting with few words and a lot of muscles. The chasing scene with 50's and 60's rock screaming in the megaphones is excellent. If you want to have a good time, pure entertainment... By the away, a little history lesson. There has been a lot of criticism because the soldiers in Africa speak Spanish. Well, the Soviet forces in Africa many times had Cuban soldiers inlisted. The reason: the weather, the cuban were more used to high temperatures. It's not a mistake.
The Wolverine (2013)
Disappointing
It's not a five because of a very good action scene on a top of a speeding train... otherwise it would be a 5. This means this movie is a bunch of some action scenes, with no real continuity in the story. What a mess! I don't get half of the characters. When we see any X-Men related movie, we are going to compare them to the others movies. And when you see this, you're going to compare with X-Men Origins Wolverine. So let me tell you, it's like driving a Ferrari and then driving a Yugo. There is so wrong details, so lack of sense in the story, i don't know where to begin. So, i will not point them out. When i saw this flick i felt the urge to watch the "Origins:Wolverine" again, to restore my faith in good movie making.
The Internship (2013)
The same thing
It's enough. The same characters over and over and over again. How many times we already saw these two together? And the same base story: two not-so-great, a lot-of-unlucky men, winning against all odds. There is some funny moments, specially if you are a little nerd (like most of us are) and be able to understand some jokes. The "Charles Xavier" one is funny, but is not enough to support all the movie. The rest of the cast is too simple, too cliché. I'm getting tired of this two. They don't even try to make something new. And someday they will crash, real hard, and try to make some different movies. Until then, we will have to deal with more some "Intership-crap- repeating-movies".
Battlefield Earth (2000)
Bad but... there is worst out there
This movie is bad. No doubt about it. But is not as bad as it was painted along the years. It sucks. But not big time like others reviews made believe. Its bad but not the worst. First of all, i'm don't give a damn about Scientology, or in matter of fact, about any religion. I particularly don't like Travolta. Made some good movies and bad ones. So, knowing this, i'll try to make a review forgetting the above. I don't know if this flick is about Scientology or not. I don't care. It's a nice story, awful script, pathetic actors, but good scenarios, props, special effects. There are good things and bad things. Like many movies. So, if you never saw this movie before, take this is mind: It's a bad movie, but not the worst. In fact, the worst of all, and this is the only spoiler, is to believe that humans that lived in caves for hundreds of years would be able to learn how to flight Harriers fight jets in a couple of days.
The Slaughter (2006)
Entertainment
I liked this movie. You know the actors, the story, the script... none is this is a "6", not even close. Really really weak. But in the end, all put together, you have an entertaining movie. A real horror guts blood brains movie. I give it a 6 because they don't expect to be a master-piece, not even a good movie. They realize their own limitations (like i said, actors, story... and so one) so they adapted the movie to that limitations. It's simple, straight, full of clichés, but in the end it really works. When i started to see the movie i never expected anything, so i was surprised to have a smile in my face in the end. One of the best B-Movie.
The Conjuring (2013)
Next to the Exorcist
This movie is Excellent! No doubt! It's an horror story with a meaning, with a background, based in (supposed) real events. This is enough to strike some fear. But it's far from been all. The ambiance created is the best ever seen in horror movies. Some scenes will take you back to the "Exorcist". It's hard to find a fail, a week part in this movie. The story, screenplay, the actors, the scenarios, the rhythm of the movie, all good. I saw tons of horror movies, lately many of them supposedly based in "real events". Well, the paranormal investigators portrayed in this movie really existed. The "Haunted", "poltegeisted", "possessed" family (call it wherever you want) really existed. I cannot remember the last movie that really scared me. and i love it! If you liked the "Exorcist", your are gonna love this one.
World War Z (2013)
An "A" to "Z"
I love zombies movies. Always had. Sometimes this can work in two ways: Either you can be very critical and demanding when a new "undead" movie comes up, or you can love it. This on, i love it. Fast, crazy, killing machines zombies. Not the traditional clumsy, slow, stupid ones. These undead "Zekes" works like ants, or like bees, or wasps. They work in groups, like a swarm. Probably if the word "Swarm" was used on the title, it would give it too much away. OK, not perfect, sure. The final part, kinda like an anti-climax. Anything else after the Israel wall-climbing, attacking scene, almost everything would feel like an anti-climax. The acting, is Brad Pitt, and that's all. The rest, is just for show... oh, i forget the zombies. The "virus spreading zombie turning thing..." awesome! I could say that the best actors were the extras. Not because the main characters were bad constructed, but because this new "zombie behavior" (fast, swarm like) is so well plotted that... in one word. In a couple of years i'll still remember how the persons acts when they "die" and "get undead" like zombies...
Now You See Me (2013)
Just like "Magic"
I give it a 5. Simply for some effects (camera movement, some sequences). Like i wrote, this movie is just like "Magic". Not the one that makes you dream, but the trickstery, the fast hand movement, the attention diversion. That's what this movie makes. Shows you some cool effects, some drizzling and dazzling (i hope this is correct) in order to make you divert from the essential: What a confusing, webbing, "with lack of sense" story. Well, not the core of the story... Spoiler alert: The core is about getting even, revenge. But the way the story is told... what confusing! The acting, even from Mr. Harrelson (who i much respect) and Morgan Freeman (likewise) is at, best, weak. Eisenberg act the same character over, and over, and over, not matter what role, what movie... What a disappointing... PS: Sorry for my English, not perfect, but i think you can understand the important stuff.
Alex Cross (2012)
Why i give it 2 instead of 1?
This flick should only receive 1, but then there is Matthew Fox, with a good performing, and i have to give it 2. The rest is simply awful. The story it's good. A nice idea for a film, but the script ruins it. The performance from Mr. Perry its pretty disgusting. I don't know where to start. I could talk about the poor soundtrack, the scenes without any meaning or continuity for the story, the stupid details emerging all over the film, but i will summit it all with this: In the beginning of the movie we see 2 characters: the daughter and the mother of Perry's character. Roughly one hour later, (spoiler) at the Perry character wife funeral, we see those 2 characters again... with the exactly same clothes as before! OMG! Even the f******* wardrobe was wrong! Everything is wrong! Except the bad guy, Fox's character. What a shame. A good director, good screen writing and specially, good actors could turn this originally good idea in a good movie, instead of crap.
The Woman (2011)
Feral Child
There are a lot of reviews about this movie. Some of the takes the "Feminist" route, others the "anti-feminist". I disagree of them all. This movie has nothing to do with it. Its about Feral Child, child raised by animals. BIG SPOILER ALERT: The "lesson" about this film is that a "natural" feral child (raised by animals in the wild) is more "human" than a feral child raised by animals in captivity. It's has nothing to do with feminism/anti-feminism... it takes a more cientifical approach, not a social. I liked, weird, original, innovating movie. Other big lesson is about humanity. Or the lack of it. Not in the "Feral child", but in the (what should be)normal humans, it a good house, good jobs, but completely mess up family. Who are the really animals? In the end, why is this film good? This is the first review i write, (not in perfect English, but again i'm Portuguese) and i wrote it because there were some interesting items (philosofical, cientifical, sociological) to discuss.
