Shalosh Ima'ot (2006)
Telenovela Ltd.
As far as bad Isralei cinema goes, This is one of those populist attempt to ride on some nostalgic waves with the help of a most contrived plot, shallow characters and the presence of one of Israel's most successful singers, Miri Mesika.
Though there are talented people on board (including great work from cinematographer Shai Goldman and veteran actresses Gila Almagor, Rivka Raz and Tracy Abramovich), this movie about the life of a threesome is just a boring Telenovela that got way too much publicity.
There were some good to great movies this year ("Aviva Ahuvati", "Adama Meshuga'at" and - my personal favorite - "Someone to Run With" to name a few). "Three Mothers" is definitely not one of them - unless you are OK with soap opera.
Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi (2001)
Grrreat!
Hayao Miyazaki probably doesn't know that there are people here who waited to see his movie on the big screen for a long time, and I'm happy to say that these wishes come true :-) I saw, about 2-3 years ago, "Princess Mononoke" out of curiosity, at a time names like "Akira" and "Ghost in the shell" where probably known by a few local animators... since then i have a thing for Anime.
I think "Spirited Away" is far more a mysterious movie then "Mononoke" and it is more connected with the Japanese tradition which is foreign to all of as, westerners. That's why there are people who relate to Anime as weird and not focused. I, of course, disagree. Please do yourselves a favor, see "Spirited Away" and while watching it try to forget everything your culture taught you to belief as the only truth.
