Mission Backup Earth (2013)
Good Start - How does it progress.
I saw this when I was in Melbourne, have always been a sucker for a film festival. The played all 5 episodes as one so total 15 minutes. There representing the the series said this was a prequel to the real series and was made as a test to see if it would work... Well I thought it did.
The whole concept of Mission Backup Earth is, what happens when the Sun becomes unstable and a Red Giant and how does Humankind escape the solar System and re colonise a new world. The prequel centres around a married couple who are scientists based on Neptune's moon Triton. I'll give little more away - have a look.
Points and gripes. I think the script was a little wanting and could have done with some action. The Visual Effects for a no budget were excellent and would only say the looked a little clean against the live footage. The cast was okay overall and think that there is work to be done with some of the characters, most are fine. The acting overall needs to improve and wonder whether this is due to limited time for shooting or just one of the problems of shooting green screen.
Where it goes from here will depend on finding a budget. This has won two awards at the Melbourne WebFestival...
Serbuan maut (2011)
A total surprise
The Raid: Redemption is without a doubt the best action film of the last decade and maybe one of the best action films of all time. Evans scripts the film light and keeps the action heavy and coming at you every single pulse-pounding second from beginning to end. It puts Jackie Chan to shame and almost blows Tony Jaa out of the water. If you want to watch one of the most expertly filmed martial arts movies that also contains an even serving of gunfire and blood splatter then look no further. The Raid: Redemption has it all and more.
Rama (Iko Uwais) is part of a SWAT team that raids the building of a very powerful drug lord that most cops wouldn't even think about bringing down. He knew the risks when he signed up, but yet he still chose to leave his pregnant wife at home and head out into the bloody unknown. The Raid: Redemption proposes a fairly straight-forward plot, yet it still tries to squeeze in a few expected turns to keep your thinking and enjoyment levels on the same page.
Hard Shoulder (2012)
Poor mans Rob Zombie
Dead End is over blown and weak on script. It centres around a fractious family car trip where mum and dad (Will Johnson and Angela Dixon) spend the whole time moaning at each other throughout. There teenage daughter (Frances Speedie) and son (Callum Anderson) are irritatingly miserable and grumpy.
The journey takes longer than they had planned and at one point are overtaken by a convoy of travellers. This prompts dad into a confrontation which the family later regrets when they because ambushed by the travellers, tied up and torture. Sounds like a poor mans Rob Zombie movie doesn't it
Right! The family/gang lead by Jamie Foreman leads his motley and deranged family (Jon Campling, James Fisher, Lucy Drive and Jill Greenacre)
Told you Rob Zombie
Mr. Campling even adapts the voice
They all different aspect threatening or violence behaviour while their captors try their best to resist or escape. You kind of hope that it's going somewhere, that there's a deep meaning to it all but
what little there is does start to make sense as the intimidation progresses.
Don't get me wrong it is not a total debacle, there are certain bits within Dead End/hard Shoulder to be commended. Mainly the performance of Jamie Foreman as a vicious villain. But there are also chunks of the movie that are simply poor
Cut it down – that's the best thing to do with this kind of low budget movie 75 minutes would be a max... then it would be much better.
How to Train Your Dragon (2010)
Brilliant
I wasn't sure what to expect and went in to see the film expecting it to be a nice pleasant animation. How wrong I was. This is a brilliantly crafted script, where the animation is just incredible. I hate the over use of superlatives. But the detail, the entertainment value are amazing.
It takes a bold stance attempting to entertain adults not by being cute, gimmicky, thematically challenging or infused with pop culture shout outs. It does so by being imaginative, heartfelt, and beautiful in fiery flourishes.
When it comes to the use of 3D it is everything that Avatar was except this doesn't bore you to death with a flimsy story and pure emphasis on the WOW isn't 3D amazing. You do not need to see this film in 3D to be blown away - it's a great story, well crafted and very well made. A don't miss as far as I'm concerned.
Inception (2010)
Complicated and amazing
I watched this for the first time yesterday and am sure I will be re-watching this time and time again. You have to stay on the ball all the way through it and despite it's length nearly two and a half hours, it is time well invested. Big Budget, spectacular effects, huge cast do everything to enhance what is a first class story, cleverly thought through cinematically and story wise.
It must be had to not appear good as an actor in a movie like this, you have serious plot to consider, time to work on the process and a budget that allows the whole process to breath. 160 million is a hefty chunk of money but the effects are breath taking.
If you want a challenge and entertainment and want to feel like you can go back for more and more. Buy it, steal it, get it anyway you can, you won't regret the investment on any level.
Spirits of the Fall (2008)
Bad, Bad, Bad
I was in a second hand DVD shop and so this - The cover looked intriguing, the notes looked good and for a quid... You have to say nothing ventured nothing gained.
Wrong! This is slow, badly acted, badly directed, badly shot and a complete waste of a quid! The plastic for the DVD and box must have cost more than I paid for it and all that is in that is a waste of energy. The chap who made this, directed and starred in this gave not a single chance to any actor in the production to show if they can really act or not.
The trouble is if it wasn't for the advent of DV and the fact that anyone can now make a movie, the film industry may not of progressed at all and Hollywood would still be only churning out cannon fodder. But sadly when you see an indie like this, regardless of how much it costs, it's a shame such shambolic drivel. I'm sorry to say this it went in the bin where it belongs.
