The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021)
8/10
Pleasant surprise. Performances were good. Some innovative square sequences and surprisingly is bloodier than "The Nun". Step up from Michael Chaves' "The Curse of La Llorona" but a step down from the first two Conjuring movies.
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2016)
9/10
Full disclosure: I've never read Jane Austen's novel or seen any of the adaptations so I went into this one fully blind. Thought it was fun and gory, despite being PG-13! Need a sequel to this, please. Now, I'm off to find the source material!
Cruella (2021)
An unexpectedly brilliant reimagining of a classic character.
An unexpectedly brilliant reimagining of a classic character. It does its own thing as a pseudo-prequel/reimagining instead of a straight rehash. Constantly engaging, with excellent performances and jaw-dropping visuals (the outfits are another star of the show!)
(No doggos were harmed.)
Dawn of the Dead (1978)
10/10
On point social commentary and a horror delight for zombie fans, or just horror fans in general. Likeable characters and groundbreaking practical effects.
Opstandelsen (2010)
8/10
"A Zombie Exorcism" or "Opstandelsen" (which I think is a much better and less campy title, no?) was a blast of a zombie film. It doesn't quite break new ground but it's got a lot of spirit that is usually found in low-budget film. With gore aplenty and a lean runtime, I could not ask for more.
Raya and the Last Dragon (2021)
Even with their stories that seem familiar, Disney creatives still find a way to make a film unique.
Even with their stories that seem familiar, Disney creatives still find a way to make a film unique. Such is the case with this film. My little sister liked it and so did I. Voice acting was heartfelt wnd funny, and there were timeless lessons to be had that are doubly relevant these days.
Al morir la matinée (2020)
Slasher and giallo in unholy matrimony.
Slasher and giallo in unholy matrimony. Visually stunning, largely thanks to the giallo influences. The soundtrack is to die for -- I've been replaying Power Glove's Motorcycle Cop over and over. Characterization is scant, save for what the characters do within the plot proper. Some of it, I found cute, particularly a teenage boy's interaction with who he assumes to be Brooke Shields. Oh, and the blood and gore during the kills -- phenomenal.
Scream (1996)
10/10
Still holds up. On point commentary about violence and desensitization. References that can satisfy a horror fan.
Initiation (2020)
"Initiation" meets and subverts my expectations for slasher films.
To me, Initiation is a worthy slasher that seamlessly injects social commentary within a slasher film plot without resorting to lecturing viewers. It instead opts to serve up bloody violence as expected in slasher films while also twisting audience expectation.
