Black Mask (1996)
4/10
Great action, poor plot and dubbing
23 July 2003
I gave this film a 4 out of 10 rating. Had the dubbing and plot been up to the standard of the martial arts displayed, this could quite easily have scored a 9, but as it stands, it is a terrible movie. It's like watching a tragedy unfold; you know Li deserves a much better movie. In fact, the action scenes deserve a whole better movie to themselves.

I get the feeling that the acting was probably terrible too, but it's frankly impossible to tell when the film is dubbed. Especially when it has possibly the worst dubbing ever seen.

Stargate Infinity (2002–2003)
Terrible
8 July 2003
I didn't think that it could be quite as bad as it was. This is possibly the worst cartoon on television at the moment. Just because it's made for children isn't an excuse not to make it well.

This is quite simply a disservice to the Stargate name, and not suitable for children due to the extremely poor quality. We need decent childrens cartoons!

The Matrix (1999)
9/10
A true concept movie
8 July 2003
People often forget that Science Fiction does not have to take place in the future, or to involve fantastic weaponry or special effects. All it needs is to work with a conceivably possible concept in a "what if" scenario (Hence the rather excellent "Fatherland" is Science Fiction despite being set in the past)

This movie is all about concept. It asks many questions behind the seemingly pseudo philosophical "What is the Matrix?" questioning the nature of reality; is reality what we perceive it to be, and if not, does our perception not make it real? destiny, and fate (fate and destiny are not the same thing. Fate is what will happen, and destiny is what you will do) Of course, the mind bending visuals did their part in selling this to the audience.

This movie has it all; strong plot, fine cast performances, and one hell of a visual ride. Few will go away disappointed from this, and at the very least you'll look around you and notice things you might have missed before.

Definitely recommended viewing. The 1984 of it's generation.

Delivers everything it sets out to.

Those already familiar with Luc Besson productions will know that they have a tendency for a light story accompanied by beautiful visuals. Whilst some of his directorial outings have broken this rule, his productions rarely stray from rule number one; make the experience fun for the viewer. This movie certainly keeps with the fun. Unashamedly breaking the laws of physics and reality in favour of visual flair (as has always been the Besson way) this movie delivers everything it promises; it is fun, and the story is (whilst not a masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination) more than adequate as a vehicle for the action.

Strong cast, good story (with no pretensions of being anything it isn't) and beautiful visuals. A fun intelligent action movie.
