The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1969)
Brilliant film, incredible performance
Beautifully filmed and acted by all the performers, this is a knock-out film. Maggie Smith is incredible right down to her Morningside accent. The other players hold their own against her powerhouse performance. The Edinburgh locations are great and the film has a remarkably nostalgic quality that reflects Brodie's romanticism. A beautiful Rod McKuen score as well! A must see film. An interesting comparison can be made with Dead Poet's Society, which has a male teacher in an all male school (compared to a female teacher in an all girl's school). In Brodie, unorthodox irresponsible teaching is condemned while in Dead Poet's Society it is valorized. In both the teaching methods bring about the death of a student and the school's reaction is similar. The film makers, however, come down on opposite sides in their attitudes toward the teachers
The Glass Mountain (1949)
Short review
A nicely shot, scenically attractive, and often moving, powerful and dramatic film. Well worth seeing for its looks alone, but fine score by Nino Rota and the voice of the great baritone Tito Gobbi make it a must for opera lovers. If the main theme sounds familiar it was used years ago for the theme song for a TV show called "Picture for a Sunday Afternoon".
Little Fugitive (1953)
Brilliant innovative film about 6 year old boy hiding out in Coney Island
A brilliant masterful one of a kind film. Morris Engel's beautiful photography and Ruth Orkin's talented editing take this film to heights rarely seen. An innovative camera allows for a `documentary/candid' quality to this film about a 6 year old boy (Richie Andrusco) who runs away to Coney Island because he thinks he accidentally killed his brother. Beautifully composed shots under the boardwalk a images never to be forgotten. For any serious film student (in fact for anyone) this is a `must see'.
French New Wave cinema must be incredibly indebted to this poignant, sensitive and insightful film.
