Scooter LaForge: A Life of Art (2023)
Fantastic highlight of a unique artist.
I did not know anything about Scooter LaForge before viewing this documentary and now I want to learn even more! I had a great time watching this well paced documentary about Scooter. The way Ethan Minsker presented it was very unique and kept my attention to the screen. I was really invested in Scooters upbringing and how it led to him becoming a professional artist, that sort of passion can be quite infectious for people around Scooter and for the ones who take the time to view this documentary. I thought Ethan kept only the vital pieces with allowing no fluff like a lot of documentaries tend to do, this told a nice concise story about an artist wanting to make his mark on the world. I hope this film does just that for Scooter, its definitely the best way to get his name out there. I recommend this brisk documentary, you will not regret checking it out! I cannot wait to see more of Ethan's work, this has made me quite the fan.
UN-RESOLVED (2022)
An entertaining crime film
I thoroughly enjoyed this film, I felt it was really well put together with a fantastic cast, great score and strong direction. It is such an achievement that Bruce Carlton Cunningham, wrote, directed, and played the lead role as doing even one of those roles is incredibly challenging. The story had some great tension and twists to it and overall was a solidly developed redemption arc. While a bit of a slow burn at times (I do think it could have been tightened up in some spots), it never feels like it drags. I definitely recommend this film if you are looking for a unique take on the crime genre.
Toxic Impulses (2022)
A fun thriller
This was certainly a unique thriller film, I especially enjoyed the opening credits which seemed like a nice nod to the James Bond opening credits. The actors were did a solid job throughout. I really enjoyed the music especially during the heist scenes. It was great to see the filmmakers do their best to make the most of a small budget for their action sequences, like the freeway car chase, very unique. I also thought the way it was shot was well done, making this feel so expansive. I had a good time overall with it and the ending was definitely memorable and was not something I would have predicted, well done!
AVA: A Twist in the Road (2021)
A unique look at how your life can change in an instant
Catherane Skillen writes, directs, and stars in a moving piece about a woman who loses it all and tries to start over. I thought the film did a nice job showing what can happen when someone so involved with your life is no longer around and how different your life can change as a result. All the actors gave real sincere performances that really sold the events of the film. I think the movie could have had a bit more of a resolution showing us where Ava ended up as the result the decisions she made. For carrying the film as the lead in front of and behind the camera, Catherane does an admirable job with telling the story.
Hemisphere (2023)
A unique indie sci-fi
I enjoyed the homage to Alien and 2001 Space Odyssey, the love for those kinds of films is evident here. The two leads worked well together and were able to drive the story really well which is impressive. The spaceship and space station effects worked well for this story. The twists at the end keep you guessing how things will work out for the characters. I think what is missing is the addition of a third primary character, someone to balance the other two but overall I think the two leads pick up enough of the slack that it is hardly noticeable. It is amazing what one can do sometimes when you have a tight budget and I think the filmmakers made the most of what was available.
Dirty Beautiful (2015)
Relatable Relationship
We all have those relationships where we really want it to work but ultimately it might be better to just not be together at all. That is what is at the heart of this film about a young writer and a free spirited woman he happens to meet one day. They both have had difficult upbringings that has shaped their world view and how they connect with other people. They must ultimately decide if remaining together is worth all of the heartache and the way the film decides to answer that is clever. I think the story was well written and the two leads really do a great job showcasing the characters vulnerabilities and their tenderness for one another as well as their more volatile moments. I really identified with a lot of the insecurities that the writer had and at certain parts it felt like they took a page out of something that happened to me. I recommend this if you are looking for something different and relatable, it does not shy away from how complicated relationships can be and the feelings that cannot be controlled.
