Disappointment
7 November 2023
I like the cast and the acting of the lead players is good. Meagan Tandy, Wes Brown and Brely Evans are natural. The script is really lacking. The characters as written are frequently childish, shallow and lack any nuance. What could have been an interesting story is just painfully predictable.

The music is annoying and utterly pedestrian. It lacks any semblance of thematic coherency.

Directing is poor in that we are spoon fed everything. The whole production feels like a slightly darker television after school special.

Things do pick up a hair in act III. For just a moment it feels like we might be building towards something. Unfortunately, the poor man's version of an actual soundtrack gets louder and becomes almost comedically distracting. For the final climax, we are treated to an anti-climax. Just plain bad writing.

On another positive side , the hair and makeup is expertly executed. More productions should follow this realistic and nuanced effort.

NOT A COMEDY
5 October 2022
Great acting. I think a very weak script, but if you love studies in misery, this one might be for you. Unfortunately this movie was listed as a "twisted comedy". Twisted, yes. Comedy, no, not really. I guess some people currently view hopelessness as hilarious. I saw one review that said it was a "real movie about real people", I sure hope not. It's a movie about extraordinary drinking, cynicism and crime as a way of life. The idea that people are so hung up on their provincial identity is, thankfully, not an especially American concept. Hoffman, and all of the actors do an outstanding job of quiet desperation. There are some great characters in the movie but they don't get the lines they deserve. The colors are muted to go with the dismal backdrop of this town that takes some pride in its small minded rumor mongering. The use of music in the film is appropriately understated and there are a couple of nice moments. The photography is ok, there are a few nice shots.

I am a sucker for watching this.
16 September 2022
This is a story about suckers, for suckers. This is not a documentary or journalism. This is a con in order to get you to keep watching in the belief that something interesting might happen. What's infuriating here is how stupid they think the audience is. They take a story that could take 5 minutes, or 15 minutes, or maybe even 45 minutes to tell, and they stretch it into an excruciating 240 minutes. The music is worse than hack. The editing is filled with trite B roll. There are many irrelevant and unnecessary interviews stuffed in here. One character is actually invented by the film makers, making them complicit in this travesty. Obviously, this woman got completely suckered by an absurd conman. The whole time you will be yelling at the screen to tell this lady to run. But poor Sarma has a rather strong self destructive streak. She is the kind of addict for whom I do feel sorry, but it's painful to feel. All of the main characters here are utterly pitiful. One liar can do a great deal of damage when combined with naïveté, complicity and a total refusal to take personal responsibility. And I feel pathetic for my own prurient interest in watching any bit of this program. I could be studying something beautiful. I could be playing music. I could be making the world more beautiful, more peaceful and more loving. I think I'll go do that now - after I take a shower, because I feel filthy.

Exquisite! A psychological thriller about psychosis and manipulation.
27 August 2022
This is a truly exquisite film. To start with, the screenplay is fantastic. This is a psychological thriller about psychosis and manipulation. I get the sense this must be an awesome novel. The casting and acting is absolutely superb. Both leads play brilliant insights into the human drama. Tipi plays a young woman scared and traumatized by her experience. Sean plays the man of action at once being a hero and serving his own desires. The musical score is superb. And Hitchcock is really at the hight of his powers in one of his very best films. The camera work is nuanced as is the pacing and editing. A great watch.

The Acting really won me over- but the gratuitous gore is absurd.
6 August 2022
The acting here is superb, especially by the leads. Photography is nice, and a number of the shots are composed excellently. Editing is well paced. Unfortunately too many of the precious budget dollars are used on absurd and over the top bloody gore. This takes away from the film instead of adding to it. The music is also quite poorly done. It's just a bunch of electronic noises. Next time, spend more energy on professional music and less on ketchup splattering. Screenplay is good but it needs to take a few more opportunities with the humor and absudity of the storyline. Surrealism will come across better with more laughs and less gore. Final note: I am watching this just a few hours after Alex Jones apologized for being "wrong, but not on purpose."

Waste of a cast - pitiful script
6 July 2022
This was a huge disappointment. I'm so tired of movies treating us like idiots. The script is vapid and trite. The immensely talented cast is entirely wasted. The music is corny and lame. This is as bad as any hallmark made for tv schlock. Saccharin garbage.

By attempting sympathy for a traitor and prostitute, the script is the worst crime of the film.
30 June 2022
While this subject matter is fertile material for studying how we can serve right instead of wrong- this woman declares "in war, there is no right and wrong, there is only survival, and I did what I had to do to survive" - this is spoken exactly like a traitor and a prostitute. What if doing the right thing were more important than survival? I guess then you would be a hero. Wars are fought exactly because there is a difference between right and wrong. Freedom isn't free. The crime involved here harmed the entire nation, and the entire free world.

There is no real complicated morality play here. Just plane old treason and opportunism. And obviously for a couple of actors to end up working directly for Goebbels is probably a sign of where their sympathies lay. But somehow this is scarcely addressed.

The script is by far the worst crime of the film.

Al Pacino is a little less cartoonish here than in other late pieces, so he was surprisingly watchable. However, again the script rears its ugly head. His closing remarks are patently absurd and painful to hear. I didn't bother to look up how accurate this script stayed to the record, but I can guess. As philosophy it is garbage. They had an interesting legal argument they could have made, but they chose not to.

Meadow Williams' acting is over the top and sickly sweet. Her wardrobe and hair is fake and distracting. And she pretends that her character had no choice, as does the absurd script.

The music is mediocre. Wardrobe is mediocre. Lighting is intentionally soft.

truly idiotic as a movie
25 June 2022
I'm sorry to report this is just a sycophantic episode of Marty and his joint narcissism with his subjects. This is not a story about rock and roll or the Rolling Stones. It's just a toss off - like somehow the making of this movie is more important than the subject matter itself. A complete waste of talent and senseless use of talent. They would have been a thousand times better off just issuing the concert video. Sorry guys, your sense of self-importance ruined it. Rock and roll - and all good concerts, are about the music, not personalities. The camera work is totally sporadic and not focused on the musicianship. It's a complete fail in my opinion.

Stick with it for a satisfying finish.

The slow burn sizzles. It takes a while but it's a good one. Terrific acting by the leads. Music could be more original- it is repetitive and without nuance. It gets tedious and annoying.

Sound matters
10 January 2022
Stick with this one, it comes together beautifully. And this movie is about something important- how we sound. Let's all endeavor to sound smooth and soulful instead whiny and squeaky. It's the right way to live.

The cast is perfect. The script is great. The music is fun.

Truly Pointless
14 November 2021
What is attempting to be achieved here? It qualifies as neither a character study nor an interesting relationship movie with plot development. The acting and casting is adequate but there is just no substance that I could glean from this story.

Stop Shaking the camera!!!
27 June 2021
Just because you have one camera, why does it need to shake and spin around all the time? This is distracting and dizzying. Really some of the worst camera work I have ever seen. It just moves around constantly for no reason at all. Woody is great. Idea is funny, although another rehash of how hard it is to be a narcissistic movie star is a rather played out plot line.

Shameful
9 May 2020
I don't want to take this film too seriously, because it is absolutely ridiculous. This is the kind of "Faith" film that gives faith films a bad name. The wide range of stereotypes is like watching a cartoon. The writers and directors should be ashamed of this effort.

Not good, and not at all funny
16 April 2020
Terrible script. The story doesn't hang together very well. Great cast, totally wasted by bad writing. No jokes or comedic value to speak of. Why say that this is an action comedy when there is not a single laugh? This movie was very disappointing.

Great story- poorly told.
8 September 2019
Great story. Great involvement from Seve himself. Great interviews. Horribly scarred by time jumps back and forth to childhood at random and irritating times. This story has a beginning, a middle and an ending. Unfortunately, the director showed no respect for this in a failed effort at cinematic show boating. Why does everyone try to be Quentin Tarantino. Be yourself. And most of all show respect for the subject matter.

Excruciating
25 July 2019
This was truly painful to sit through. It started with some funny scenes around golf then the movie goes on a bit of a bender. The golf parts of the story go from quirky to completely unbelievable . There was clearly no-one familiar with the game involved with this movie. Even more bizarrely, the same inane characters keep repeating the same lines for more than an hour. This movie felt like a toothache.

an unfortunate whitewash
12 June 2019
This is an unfortunate whitewash that misses some of Bush's most shameful, and a few of his best moments. John Meachem's book is a far better and far more honest account of this consequential man.

Absolutely hilarious

Well crafted jokes and well delivered. This stand up is better than most of the material he is allowed to do on Saturday Night Live. I laughed a lot. And Pete shows himself to be a brave and endearing fellow.

Inexplicably dumb
27 January 2019
First off, the cinematography in this movie is gorgeous and exquisite. There is also good music and good sound editing. Unfortunately, those are the only good points. The plot takes a full 50 minutes to set up. While the long awaited set up was promising, the characters then do some inexplicable and unbelievable things. So the movie, while maintaining a creep factor gets very dumb and fails completely at the end. They suck you into an empty story. Another weird thing is the deliberately wooden acting. What was the point ? Waste of a good cast and crew

A bit of a whitewash
30 August 2018
GW is not just one of the greatest Americans, he is one of the most heroic humans in history. That doesn't justify a whitewash that mentions not a single human fault. C'mon Newt, a true historian would do a much more thorough job.

Unbelievably Bad - I mean wow
8 March 2018
Great acting all around. The rest of this movie is a total train wreck. Directing is horrendous. Editing is pointless and annoying. Screenplay is absurdly dumbed down and misses some of the most important time periods both for the man and the country. Flashing back and forth to the point of dizziness. Music is saccharine. A truly shameful effort

A total whitewash
2 November 2013
Great interview with Hank, and great interview with his wife Wendy. But that's it. No opposing viewpoint. In fact, basically no corroborating viewpoint. It's all Hank all the time. And very curiously, the term credit default swap is not mentioned a single time, even though there was exponentially more money at risk in credit default swaps over mortgages than there were in actual mortgages- and this is the main illiquid asset that caused the investment bank failures. Seems bizarre that Hank doesn't mention this. And it seems bizarre to have a 2 hour documentary without any journalism whatsoever. I give one star for the lighting and pleasant interviews with Wendy. It is a common tactic to use family members to win over an audience, and this part worked on me.
