Black Widows (2016)
A refreshingly funny take on a very sensitive, relevant subject
Recently came across this film online and I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised with the refreshingly funny way the director tackled an extremely sensitive and hugely relevant subject! If I had to compare this film to any out there, I'd say it has the feel of a female version of 'Very Bad Things.'
Without too many major spoilers -- Black Widows centers around our main character, Darcy and her two best friends, Nora and Olivia. After Darcy is the victim of date rape, she plans an innocent revenge on her rapist, enlists the help of Nora and Olivia, only to have things spiral hugely out of control over the course of one event-filled evening.
The story moves along at a great pace, our three main characters play off each very nicely and the acting is very solid. I was also impressed with the way the director very delicately handles this sensitive subject -- riding that edge of "dark humor", yet not crossing over the line so as to trivialize anything. Very hard to do, yet Black Widows pulls this off.
I strongly recommend this film to both women and men. Fun ride!
Dark Woods (2010)
Flawed, but good overall
When I first popped this is my DVD player I have to say I wasn't expecting all that much, but I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this story. Of course like any movie it has it's flaws but there was a point about a third of the way through when it got really good. The acting is also well done for an "indie" (especially the young girl and James Russo). And the cinematography is especially outstanding. Of course, the locations seem limited because it's an indie flick, but I found that to not take away from the story too much, especially since it's shot so beautifully and a lot of it out in nature in the beautiful woods. I give this movie a solid 7 out of 10.
