Un prophète (2009)
Amazing slice of prison life
Just watched this on recommendation of a friend. The lead, Tahar Rahim, is mind blowingly good, and the script seamlessly blends the juxtaposition of his inner mind with the harsh realities of French prison life. Niels Arestrup portrays the ageing gangster holding onto power flawlessly and this in turn adds to the tapestry of loneliness that is so effectively laid out throughout the prison. The pacing is very fresh as well, cuts are minimal and the camera often feels like it is trying to find itself, looking for answers along with the inmates. This could well have slowed the narrative drive of the movie but the decisions and dilemmas faced by the characters serve as the real drive of the story as opposed to a more conventional use of mise en scene. Please watch this movie if you haven't already - it's a beauty : )
Psychosis (2010)
Brilliant movie
I'm a massive fan of this movie, it's a perfectly executed re-imagining of 1983's Scream Time. Charisma Carpenter is a great choice for the lead role of 'Susan' and she successfully pulls off a difficult character arch that sees her transform from a settled, confident woman into a truly tortured soul. Ricci Harnett is also great as the rather creepy groundsman 'Peck' and Paul Sculfor is a very clever choice for Susan's husband - adding a level of credibility and logic to the film that I won't spoil with this review. If like me, you like your horror to be full of suspense, thrills, sex and deception - you should watch this movie.
Joy Division (2006)
A fantastic war movie
I hired this movie from Love Film, didn't really know what to expect apart from some 2nd world war action. Five minutes in, I had a big smile on my face, the film is brilliant! If like me, you're a 2nd world war / cold war movie fan - you're in for a treat!
The attention to detail is fantastic, from costume to locations and the realisation of war torn Germany as well as the war's aftermath years later in London is flawlessly executed. It's a non- linear story and fluctuates between the protagonist's experiences in WW2 as well as his involvement in the cold war. It's not all war though and there's a really powerful romantic aspect. I would go into more detail about the story but I don't want to give anything away to anyone who hasn't seen it!
All I'll say is you should definitely get your hands on it!
Oh, and Bernadette Heerwagen is hot - loving the bathroom scene ; )
